Nintendo Wii News | Miyamoto Talks Mario Galaxy

By John Boyle 05.06.2006 20

E3... it was fun. We saw Wii, we saw new DS stuff and we finally saw the spiritual sequel to Mario 64 in the form of Super Mario Galaxy. Innovative, good looking and a joy to play... pity we didn't get more information. Well, ONM snatched a few words with Shigeru Miyamoto and managed to gleam a few more details about the game. Such as whether it'll make launch...

It is progressing quite well, but as you may have heard, it's often said that when I get involved in a project I upend the tea table and that tends to delay things! so rather than promise everyone it'll be a launch title for now and then have to break that promise later, I'll say no for now but say that if it's not a launch title it'll be out within the first six month of launch.

So we'd already deduced this already, luckily the short interview got a lot more interesting when the question of multiplayer in Mario Galaxy came up...

One thing I've always wanted to do with the Mario games is alow for one player to play as Mario and for other players to join in. The way that the Wii Remote works, given that we can have up to four Wii Remotes using the player functionality simultaneously, it would allow one playe to control Mario, wih the other players using the Wii Remote to help him out or get in his way.

Interesting stuff, so one character... one game... but four players. However the next line is really the best bit of the interview.

I think implementing this functionality into past games could make for some exciting changes

Past games? So does this mean that the implementation of the Wii Remote into VC games is back on? Here's hoping...

Stick with C3 for more news as we get it...

Interesting... It could also be that he meant past franchises though..

That's interesting aswell! So any dead franchises utilising that...would be swish.

Always great to hear news about this great game, but I'm not sure it can be referred to the real follow up to Mario 64 - I mean I don't think it's been directly referred to as Mario 128 and what with Space and all the stars it seems just as gimmicky as Mario Sunshine was.

How is Mario Sunshine gimmicky?

I'll just ignore that comment, seeing you're a Wii bit tipsy...

hmz..yeah, I think he means implimenting it into established franchise's. Not littarly "past games".

btw, When will people give up? MARIO 128 was a gamecube tech demo....that likely became Pikmin if anything at all.

Well the multi-player action on the DS version of SM64 went down quite well. Maybe they'll use the same sort of action in the Galaxy game?

Jumping from small planet to planet to gain stars or win a race? Maybe even SMG mini games like Kung Fu Chaos (if ne one heres played it). Its important for Nintendo to use Galaxy as they did with Mario 64 - show it as a game that can't be beaten, other than by another Mario game.

You're right, this game should demonstrate everything that is new and exciting about the console, showing it's potential and hinting at future directions.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of... well everybody, I'm going to openly state that, in places, I found Mario 64 a bit... boring. While some levels were inspired, others didn't really engage me, and many parts felt a little sterile.

But, as a feat of gaming innovation, it was incredible in every sense. It functioned as an awesome demonstration to other developers of just how 3D platforming environments could work (after all, how many developers have said they were playing Mario 64 during the development of Game X?). It was a template without which many games that I love simply wouldn't exist. Galaxy must act in the same way as '64, as inspiration - a springboard for the ideas of everyone else. That's what Mario 64 was in my eyes.

Less posty, more gamey.

You're not the only one that found SM64 boring. I did too. Especially after the near-perfection of the 96-exit Super Mario World or the brilliance of Yoshi's Island.

I can't wait for this game. It looks so weird and wacky. I have never seen a game like it, and the music of it complements the art, look and feel of the game. I also noticed the included the slight freeze when you hit an enemy like what they did with the zelda series since WW.

I loved M64, but i do agree with you about certain areas. I found some of the levels we're to un-forgiving. By this, i don't mean they were too difficult, just certain places seem to have the bare essantials.

I've always enjoyed a high level of visual display from a Mario game. Mario World, Yoshi's Island and even Super Mario 2 all (at the time) showed incredible promise. The first area of M64 was incredible but areas like dry dry docks seem to lack something.

The images and videos i've seen of Galaxy seem to show a more vibrant and colourful offereing to this Mario outing. The handling of M64 with the bright colours of sunshine would be nice. Plus, the added beauty of space and comet hopping will have a great feel to it. I don't think we'll be dissapointed! Smilie

Mario Sunshine had some of the most scenic environments I have ever seen.

Mario Sunshine was great potential but rushed.
It was too repedative, both in scenary and objectives.
======

Incidently, the dvd on NOM sucks Smilie
You know why?

BECAUSE THEY CUT OUT SHIGY CONDUCTING ZELDA !

Whats the point in putting converences on a DVD if you cut out the fun stuff?

Miyamoto is over-rated.

after playing NSMB, am i the only one who thinks mario should stay in 2d? or more like 2.5 (2d with nice 3d effects)?

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

OH, funny! Funny because you are Sega and you don't like Nintendo. Funny! Such a funny, witty and original post.

On handhelds yes, it'd be such a shame to see the 2d iteration die simply because technology is advancing. The devs obviously have skill in this field and why not try to innovate and advance mario on two dimensions?

Multiplayer!! AHHHH!!Smilie

Ok it is official, Miyamoto was under the influence of crack while creating his games. I was watching so other videos at school today and I honestly say I saw the most random things in a game ever, but in a good way...very good way.
I have never seen look so weird and so fun. It looks so different anything I have seen before, this a new level for platformers. I saw three bosses today, and all look wacky and more fun looking than the last. You can't say that the gigantic robot boss is not cool. I just hope that the game doesn't finish too quickly as I believe that will be it's only fault.
