Nintendo News | Opera DS Website, Hands-On and Specs

By Jorge Ba-oh 27.06.2006 25

Nintendo has launched the official Japanese website for the upcoming Opera browser on the DS. Whilst providing information and screenshots on basic functionality, it also confirms specifications for browser enthusiasts and surfers alike.

It seems that Opera DS will be as regular as computer versions of the platform, in speed, rendering and ease. Various languages are also supported to allow for virtually perfect viewing of regular websites.

  • HTML/XHTML & CSS
  • XML
  • DOM
  • SSL 2.0, 3.0, TSS

Update: It appears that Flash and PDF will be among the various file formats the browser will be NOT able to view. Apologies for the previous mistranslation.

A recent hands on with the browser also highlights the ease and sophistication the application provides, suggesting a big hit for its release in July.

Stick with C3 for future updates.

    Flash means youtube. Smilie

I wonder if it will allow software updates, considering how often adobe/macromedia bring out flash and pdf revisions..

Yes this is really cool. Now Ill be able to go on You tube but will Google video work?

Word of warning, the third box is actually a list of things the DS Browser is NOT compatible with...

Socoder.net - Where making games is fun!

Jolly good news. Smilie Visually it looks amazing and it supports far more coding formats than I had originally anticipated...

    Erm... yeh.

Additionally, the box (via Google Translate) contains..
Flash, the animated picture file and the audio file, PDF file in addition those which need plug in.

    No animated .gifs?

Socoder.net - Where making games is fun!

Surely .gifs are such an obvious inclusion that they don't feel it deserves a mention. Smilie

    Erm... yeh.

Jayenkai, thanks for the translation correction. Shame about the lack of Flash Smilie But good news on other compatibilities.

    Oh. Smilie

    So,

    No Flash (no youtube)
    No animated Gifs
    No PDF (No ebooks)

    ..

    Mmm.

Circumstances can change so quickly nowadays...

    Erm... yeh.

No flash is a bit of a bummer, it had better be on the Wii version.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I can understand no flash. (would have to be recoded for the DS chip from almost scratch..a lot of work)

But "No animated Gifs " ??!?!

    Thats just lazy, imo.

Also, Java could have been done, as thats a langerage specificaly designed to be recompilable on any platform/chipset.
Still, probably if we had java it would have taken another few months to make.

I dunno, I'm sure Animated Gifs will work, the actual google translation says Animated Images, but I think that's probably relating to videos, not .gifs..
Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm getting the feeling this'll be a dreamcast 2. Great notion of online browsing on a console but lacks compatibility to make it decent.

Any idea when the western releases are? Or if it supports Java? It's such a shame it doesn't support flash, as about 1/2 of the entire internet is built on flash nowadays.

C3, just make sure you don't become a flash website! I wana visit on my DS! Smilie

As long as i can get into Gmail and post on Cubed3 it will be fine. Still Youtube on the move would have been amazin, at least it will be more fleshed out on the wii.

Hopefully it will be a more complete package on the wii, hell as long as there's flash support and some means of upgrading the browser then I'll be happy Smilie

cant wait now i just have to find a way to get into my schools network without them finding out!! Smilie

well it'll be ages before theis is released in europe, so maybe they'll sort out flash & java by then?

Darn, flash would've been good. I'll be just fine though, it'll still be pretty cool looking at Cubed3 and email and whatever.

That's not the way it works. It wouldn't have bee left out due to time constraints, as it's a browser not a game.

Damn it!! Youtube's not going to work!!! Why didn't they include flash!!SmilieSmilieSmilie
