Nintendo's M.I.A.
Article by John Boyle [ Hazuki San ~ General Writer ]

M.I...What?

Okay readers, you should know the drill by now. Believe it or not there are consoles out there alongside Nintendo's that have fabulous games on them that (to be blunt) we would kill to have on our lovely little Ninty boxes of joy. However, the somewhat bizarre approach adopted by the Kyoto company to Third Parties in the late Nineties means we are missing out on some cracking titles and this C3 series of articles looks at the particulars of those select few worth noting.

What games are missing in action and truly leave a gap in Nintendo's back catalogue? What is the potential for these games on the Wii or the DS? And exactly what are the chances of us actually ever seeing them? This time round we are having a look at the seminal bundle of joy that is the Shenmue series. It cost an absolute fortune to make, has a following that are somewhat overly fanatical, and ultimately never made it to a Nintendo console after the fall of Sega. But are we really missing out? Let us take a closer look...

A true classic?

Shenmue is easily the most hyped game ever released on a Sega console. If you think Sonic Twosday (for those not in the know, this was the day Sonic 2 was released 'Tuesday'

Okay guys, hope you like it. I originally had a 3000 odd word essay written out but had to seriously cut it back. I could go on about these games for ages.

Persevere. Shenmue 1 picks up and if you play Shenmue 1 immediately followed by the sequel then you WILL fall in love with it.

I've actually never played either game, but from going through John's piece today I really am quite interested now. Apparently Sega is playing around with Saturn downloads on the VC...and struggling. Therefore, the chances of DC games coming are slim-to-none Smilie

Let's hope if Shenmue III comes to the Wii, there's a special I&II bundle, like with PSO on the GC.

Great write-up John! Bettered your previous on on Champ/Football Manager!! (which I can't actually find on C3...hmm...)

EDIT: Got it - Vol.3 http://www.cubed3.com/readfeature.php?id=924

Brilliant read Hazuki Smilie I want the game even more now!! Smilie

It really sounds like an amazing game, & as for the subject of Shenmue III, I think it's incredibly possible on 360, I really think it'll happen, & more likely on Wii than on PS3 Smilie

I think it'll come out on 360, if they are working on it it must be taking them ages, & I think that when people see the Wii doing well, it might see the light of Wii too Smilie

EDIT:
Apparently Sega is playing around with Saturn downloads on the VC

Will not playing Shenmue mess up any of Shenmue 2's story? I don't have a DC, so the best I'll ever be able to do is find a copy of II on Xbox. You've made me want it though, and I bet I can get it pretty cheap.

There's a film that sums up Shenmue 1. You won't miss much, maybe one or two minor pieces but it's certainly playable on it's own thanks to the summary film.

Phat!

Shenmue would suit the Wii controller down to the ground in my opinion, but I doubt we'll get it. The Shenmue fanbase is Xbox centered.

If they ported the entire series and put it on one disc - maybe. But I doubt we'd get it straight away.

Comments from Yu Suzuki are always decptively possitive, but he said earlier this year that the story would be finished, and that it would be finished in game form - which is reassuring yet confusing.

Personaly I think it will happen eventually. If Sega reach a record level of success this generation with more popular and boring IP, they may throw their old fans a bone or two, as almost all the talent is either still at Sega, or in splinter development start-ups with strong links to Sega.

An amusing story is that about a year ago, the shenmue.com domain name expired and was quickly purchased by a fan from the Shenmue Dojo forums. A few weeks later, Sega noticed and had to buy the domain off him. *sigh*, how inconsistant Sega is these days...

Confusing? Why? That statement was made because rumours flew around that it'd be finished in novel form, which seemed very plausible at the time.

I reckon we'll see it in one form or another eventually, it's just a matter of waiting.

Confusing? Why?

Because all the evidence suggests the complete opposite.

Why would Sega, in the form they are now, make another game in a series that sold so disappointingly?

They tried reviving a beloved series, Panzer Pragoon, and did anyone buy it? Did they fuck.

I bet that kid got loadsa money Smilie What a lucky kid!! Smilie

I also would have thought they would have finished it in Novel form, because it seemed like they were never going to continue it, but it's great they're still planning a game.

I agree to what Grumbler said, I think that releasing the first 2 in a disc could give it a new fanbase though, they could try it, & I'm sure that any SEGA fan like Hazuki or Grumbler would buy a PS3 if it had Shenmue III on it (would you?)

So..... wherever Shenmue goes, the fans will follow Smilie

Wii FTW!! Smilie

EDIT: Shenmue is an old Classic, it may not have sold when it was first released, but it is now incredibly popular from what I've seen in the past year, tons of people talk about it, really, I think that if Microsoft or Nintendo get the right audience & advertising, it could really work. When was Panzer Pragoon revived? Recently? Because SEGA has possibly become more popular recently, they're definitely still doing well... very well as far as 3rd partys go....

However this is regarded as Yu Suzuki's masterpiece and given that he is regarded as the top developer in Sega it's widely regarded that the plot will be finished in one form or another.

Shenmue is beautiful, its a shame all your stored data from Shenmues 1+2 has been made redundant, if a threequel is ever released, I'd like the predecessors to be packaged alongside so that you can continue through 1 + 2 + 3 with all data intact, as opposed to starting from scratch on Shenmue 3 with an empty shell of a game. (DreamCast fans will no doubt understand)
Also, Shenmues story lies deep within its distinctive world through hours of curious gameplaying, besides the plot, the feel of Shenmue couldnt be expressed with a single 3rd installment, you seriously have to be 'born' into the trilogy, (said in hope) for example, something I never hear touched on, maybe it's just me but, whilst playing through Shenmue 2, did anyone else feel homesick of Ryu's home village? I did, thats the kind of magic you're graced with when playing Yu Suzuki's Shenmue. Great article.

Great write up Haz. A truely deserving article.

I myself was along with the hype of the game and spent many a day collecting all the Sega toys out of the toy machines and many a day playing in the arcades! Smilie

There is a penny arcade strip which makes me die. I will avenge my father.... after I do this.... and this. And thats really sometimes how it feels.... but it feels good at the same time.

If you haven't played this game before you are surely missing out. It was the Goldeney of the Dreamcast. A true gem that will certainly go down in my, and alot of peoples opinions a retro legend!
