Nintendo News | New Zealand Story Confirmed for DS

By Adam Riley 19.07.2006 6

Rising Star Games today announced that The New Zealand Story, one of the most distinctive and original platform games of the 1980s, will be the next title in the firm's Revolution series of updates to classic videogames for the Nintendo DS.

New Zealand Story Revolution will be an accurate re-telling of the timeless 1988 original. Starring Tiki, a plucky Kiwi bird, the gameplay revolves around him rescuing his kidnapped friends from the clutches of a nefarious leopard seal. The setting for each of the game's levels will remain untouched although the layouts will be remixed and re-jigged to provide fresh challenges. Graphically, the game will benefit from an overhaul that updates New Zealand Story's visuals whilst retaining the clean lines of its arcade ancestor.

Martin Defries, Rising Star's C.O.O. offered: "With New Zealand Story Revolution, we're not going to be taking away anything that made the original such a charming classic. Its delicate balance will be carefully re-created and with the new features we've included, New Zealand Story Revolution will be an even more manic platform adventure than the original."

New Zealand Story Revolution will bring many more additions and innovations, details of which are to be announced as the game nears its late 2006 release date. Check out the first three images in the album below.

Nice News.

Hopefully this will lift DS sales in NZ

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

I remember that game for the NES I think.

Still looks like it is keeping those NES graphics. I know it is meant to keep the arcade style look, but it does look really bad. Why not give it a New Super Mario Bros look. I don't want to be playing how it used to be played, I'll get my NES out for that.

It should be alright though.

They actually confirmed this a while ago in an inlay card, shame nobody bought their games to see it...I'm looking forward to it, love the original!

God I loved this game.

btw Monkeyman, you are oh so wrong. Having played this on emu recently, the NES version is woeful and absolutely nothing like the arcade. Megadrive was better, but still a bit dodgy.

To me the sprites look absolutely gorgeous. Asking for a NSMB style 3D model update is, I think, not only too much, but would really take away from the fantastic pixel art.

"This man has advanced communist views ... He dresses in a bohemian fashion both at his office and in his leisure hours."

Woohoo! Havent played NZS for 20 years! (ish)

Best. Platformer. Evar. (Well, I never played the arcade version, just the Genesis one.)
