Nintendo News | 3rd Parties: Wii Too Wiik

By Jorge Ba-oh 30.07.2006 45

Various developers have announced that they won't be brining their key titles to Nintendo's new generation platform due to the machine's apparent lack of ability. Is the Wii's future all in a Haze?

In a recent interview with developer Relic," rel="external" class='fmlink'>http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18612]Relic[/url], when questioned on their proposals for upcoming home consoles noted that they will only work with the Xbox 360 and PS3 as opposed to Wii, possibly porting two of their biggest RTS titles: Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

Their stance on why they can't bring titles to Nintendo's console was:

We make more mature-rated games, and more high-end graphical games, and the Wii is going in a little bit of a different direction; they're not going to play the same game as the 360 and the PS3. You never know - if we came up with something cool we could do it, but right now our plan is not to. THQ is big into that, because we've got Pixar, we've got Spongebob, we've got all that, and the other studios will be doing amazing stuff, but not Relic.

It's creative, and you can't do the same types of games on the Wii because the power is a lot different. It's a different type of technology. I think it was really smart for Nintendo to break out on their own and do their own thing. The platform's going to be really successful.

Along with Relic, Free Radical

We'll have to wait and see what happens. The wii needs a good first year, otherwise developers may just give up on it.

I'm confident that the Wii will do great though and developers will make more games for it as the generation progresses.

This is terrible news, especially the Free Radical side, as it might mean TS4 doesn't come to Wii as well Smilie

Shame, as FR really like Nintendo...

Sorry but that's just plain ignorant

WTF people...

i agree its a total mis casting and shows the pure arrogance and lack of scope that some games developers have. the wii is perfect for both rts and fps but just cos they dont want the work or view it as a kiddie console again they all go to xbox and ps3. wot a load of crap about power ever heard of downscaling.

well i hope that the wii is the most sucessful console now and then they'll all start to change their minds and come scurring as 3 rd parties do.

At the end of the day, Wii is going to sell like hotcakes. They'll change their minds......

There is no TS4 as far as I know.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that the Wii won't get some of the games that the PS3 and XBOX 360 get, but those two consoles will miss out on a lot of BIG titles on the Wii. Just like you can't do the same things graphically on the Wii, you can't do the same things in terms of control and innovation on the 360 and PS3. Both 'sides' of the industry are going to miss out on some games. The solution, but a 360 and a Wii Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

Just hope TS4 comes to the wii don't care about any of the other games.

It's bad news but it was coming because all we have had is Ubisoft, Activision and so on constantly praising the Wii

They say that now but...

heh...

We'll see... Smilie

I'm not to bothered, Relic is talking about porting a PC game to the 360. A game I already own. When there's a 360 or PS3 exclusive RTS then I'll start caring.

I don't know about Relic, but I'm pretty sure Free Radical will develop for Wii, just not Haze (which does look FAR above the output we should expect for Wii in some shots). The guys like Nintendo, so I could see them doing an exclusive game for them at some point.

Also, while Timesplitters 4 isn't in development, it will happen eventually. When it does, I could see them developing it for all platforms and just downscaling it for Wii, since it's a pretty big series and Wii will probably be doing well by that point.

Indeed, it seems most people are going for this combo. Myself included.

You can't have ports and 'something different'. 360 and wii will be my combination of choice, too.

360 and Wii for me as well I think. I did say I'd decide later, but 360 is so tempting to me right now, seems like such a nice bit of kit. Though it won't have all the weird Japanese games that PS3 will have, so I'm still a little wary in that respect...

Well i will just stick with the Wii, if i ever was going to get one it would be PS3 rather than xbox360 but when i thought about it the Xbox also has the GTA license, Pro Evo license (hopes and thinks both will come to wii well Pro Evo should), the two big games which is why the PS2 did so well, sure the PS3 has MGS but Halo is better than it and Devil May Cry is now multi platform so if i was ever going to get one it would be the 360 but i don't think it will happen, maybe RE5 could tempt me.

It's to be expected. It's simply a lot harder to port over to the Wii since you have to downgrade and work with a different system.

I'm going for the Wii/360 pack as well.
the Xbox 360 has Halo, Mass Effect, Kotor, Rare, and most importantly, Castle Crashers (hopefully the Wii will get it, but as of now, it's just 360) Smilie

Rare

Why does Rare still hold any respect with anyone? I don't get it at all.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Agreed although Segaderhund the same could be said for SEGA in particluar the SOnic Team don't get me wrong they make good games but nowhere in the quantity or quality like they used and seem to jump on the bandwagon with games ie Brain training

Sonic Team are shit now, no question about it. Anyone with much respect for them now is a weirdo, same as with rare.

But Sega as a whole haven't gone as tits up as Rare have. They still make good games, just not as many. Still a lot more than many other large publisher/developers though.

Rare went from every game being triple A, to every game being shite, average or a remake.

This is not good; hopefully this isn't the start of a full walkout of Nintendo support...

Man, I can't believe the sheer ignorance and/or stupidity of some of these 3rd party companies. First off, When are they going to come to terms with the fact that Wii has a traditional style controller for ports, VC, and traditional style games (Smash: Brawl anyone?). They can scale back the game graphically (although, Wii is still very competent in that dept. IMHO), but if their smart (which they don't seem to be demonstrating) they'll make a game built from the ground up and make full use of all of Wii's capabilities.

It sure seems like they aren't looking into the future and what's best for gamers and the industry. They have no vision. All the seem to be concerned about is making money and that's it.

I bet you anything they'll change their minds once Wii is released.

This bullshit stigma of Nintendo being a "kiddie" company has got to go. From my experience, everyone I've spoken to who has had this warped thinking has been extremely ignorant to the kind of high quality games GameCube has to offer. So far, it looks like Nintendo is making huge strides to attacking this problem head on. Hopefully they'll be able to break free of this truly bogus stigma they've been pigeon holed with.

I actually agree with Der Segahund, I've lost all respect for Rare since their shady departure from Nintendo. That was a real bogus transaction and they seem to have lost almost all their talent as a company. Most of their valuable employees jumped ship when they broke from Nintendo. Their new staff just don't seem to be any where near as competent.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

All the seem to be concerned about is making money and that's it.

Give me one good reason why they should care about anything else. They're a buisness, it's there prioity to make money.

It's not really a case of them critisising the Wii in these two examples.

Relic are basicaly saying: "We make this kind of game and it sells just fine and pays all the bills thankyou very much."

FRD are basicaly saying: "this particular game that we're making wouldn't really suit the Wii, we'd have to take more out of the game than we're willing to."
I'm sure we'll get something from Free Radical eventually.

You have to remember that not everything is scaleable in the same way that graphics are. If a game requires incredible physics or AI, that might have to be dummed down for such a lesser powered machine and in games depending on these features, this would RUIN the game. Developers don't want to ruin their games just for the sake of a Wii port.

As has been said in this thread already, the Wii will get it's fair share of games that simply cannot be achieved on the 360, PS3 and PC as well. We can't have everything on one machine - this has always been the case in video games, in the past it's usualy been for much more trivial reasons than these basic, fundamental technical differences.

It sure seems like they arent looking into the future and whats best for gamers and the industry. They have no vision. All the seem to be concerned about is making money and thats it.

It certainly is a shame that developers need to pay off their morgages, but sadly it's the case.

I bet you anything theyll change their minds once Wii is released.

I've no doubt things will look brighter in a few months time, as more developers are reassured that the Wii is a viable platform after the 3rd party nightmares that were the SNES, N64 and GC.

i just hope they don't replace it with a Manbag Matt from telesales image instead - that would be worse.

I think it was more a case of Nintendo flogging Rare because most of the good top level designers had left and they weren't making anything decent. Microsoft were willing to pay top buck for them because they new the uneducated and naive would still buy into any old shit just because it has one of these on it.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Wii/360? Yeah, I'll get the Wii, but the 360 is the most boring piece of shit i've played in years!
