Nintendo News | Nibris Gets Help, New Sadness Info
Recent News
Polish independent developer Nibris has released more information about Wii survival horror title Sadness, as they promised a little while ago.
Realising that they do not have the manpower in-house to develop a next-generation game alone, they have teamed up with Frontline Studios to aid them with programming. Frontline have a team of around 30 people and have experience with Nintendo platforms, developing titles like Sudoku Mania and Hardcore Pool for Nintendo DS, as well as PC experience with games such as Mafioso. Digital Amigos, a company specialising in graphics who have previously worked on titles such as Xbox game Painkiller, will also be coming on board to help with the visual side of Sadness. Nibris have also roped psychologists and horror writers in to help with development.
The publisher has still not been revealed, and Nibris have no intention of talking about who they are either, leaving it to the publisher to post it on their website when they are ready. However, they have confirmed that neither Atlus nor Majesco is involved (for those curious, Majesco was the developer that we at Cubed3 had previously thought were linked to Nibris). All publication of in-game screens, demos and other presentations will be decided by the publisher.
Nibris is choosing not to reveal anymore of the storyline. "Sadness is a novelty on the video games market. Both the story and the presentation of the game [are] going to be a surprise for a player. You must forgive us [for] the fact that we present so scarce information about Sadness, but we hope that once you play it you will understand our circumspection. We do not want to spoil the fun," says Adam Artur Antolski, one of the scriptwriters. However, they did give examples of games that inspire them: Eternal Darkness, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Planetscape: Torment, ICO and Phantasmagoria.
Monsters, such as the previously shown Likho, are derived from Slavic legends. It has been said that, as with Likho, you may not encounter all monsters in the game, as it all depends on how you play and the choices that you make. Most of the game takes place in Ukraine before World War 1, and the style will be leaning towards photorealism while remaining unique with the black and white visuals.
Sadness will not have any menus, the saving system will be invisible for players and Wiimote controller operations will be intuitive. "We aim at completely intuitive behaviour of the player – just as in life. Every choice a player makes is essential – if you experience traumatic events in your life, they are in you all the time. The same is going to be with Sadness. We want the player feel he participates in events, not only a game."
Sadness will not appear sooner than the fourth quarter of 2007, so there's quite a wait to go yet. Until the next news, we have some new pieces of media for you (and the previous media of Likho to refresh your memory):
- Concept Art: Werewolf. Must be killed with a silver bullet/ball.
- Concept Art: Likho.
- MP3: Sadness Theme. (3.53MB, 2.34 min) (Right click, save as)

Why? They have been faithful to Ninty platforms for a while now. Yeah, they don't do blockbusters, but they are support, which is something that Wii doesn't really have the luxury of shunning off so fast.
I think I understand though.

Mike@C3Because they're in serious financial difficulty and wouldn't give the game the recognition it might deserve. With the new help involved, I'm thinking it's a larger European publisher now such as Ubisoft.

iddythis publisher has to be big to be able to afford the luxury of extra studios and a long development as well as taking a chance on nibris who all in all are relatively new developer. going on what has been said i would think that it could be nintendo who have shown interest in nibris as well as trying to court more adult orientated fair. but then it could be ubisoft who love wii or ea who are constantly expanding their wii portfolio. i'll hedge my bets on nintendo or maybe sega. maybe i'm being over ambitious but then this is an ambitious project with some definite clout behind it now they have the publisher.

The CroftLike the setting pre WWI Russian Ukraine and also like the idea of alternative ways to complete the game something more developers should consider doing.
The werewolf concept art is very nice.
As for the publisher my guess is Nintendo, then maybe Ubi although i wouldn't rule out the likes of SEGA and Activision, as you said that publisher must have a bit of money to expand the development team. Really starting to like the whole idea of Sadness new appraoch, kudos to Nibris
Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the cliché. They were the statement and the definition."

noneI'm still thinking Eidos, but I wouldn't put it past Sega. They just bought 2 british developers and are very outspoken in their support for the Wii.

Funnily for some reason i think Eidos migth be the mysterious publisher but i don't think they have resources, but what attracts me to it being SEGA or Ubi is that bith as Segaderhund said they of all publishers seem to like the Wii concept the most but SEGA are going through a rough batch lost 93% of their profit

noneI doubt it's Ubisoft, they seem to be up to a hell of a lot already. Sega however have revealed very little, but have been very supporting. Eidos definately have the resources, they're a big publisher with some very big IP, and they're still supporting the GC with Tomb Raider: Legend.

Mike@C3SEGA is plausible. I also think Activision is a possibility. Eidos, I don't think so, but it could happen. Hopefully they don't make us wait too long - with any luck Sadness'll be shown in some form at the Game Convention in Leipzig next month, there's supposed to be new Wii stuff there and Sadness will have been in proper development on Wii kits for a bit by then. Probably wishful thinking on my part, but we can hope for something...

noneI think it could be Nintendo using their Q fund or Fund Q, not sure which is which, that is used to fund upstart studios. Remember, Nintendo funded the development of Geist by n-space.
Miyamoto, stated that Nintendo was willing to help any developer make their vision a reality on the Wii or any Nintendo platform.
