Nintendo News | EA Says GameCube Not Dead

No doubt in a bid to capitalise on the start of the new football season, Electronic Arts has revealed details of its new FIFA 07, which will hit stores in September. Featuring licences for all the world's top leagues, including MLS and the Mexican 1st Division in North America, as well as 26 others from over 20 nations, the game is due not only on the Nintendo DS, but will surprisingly be released on both the GBA and GameCube.

This year there will be an online mode where you can control a club's future in the EA SPORTS Interactive Leagues mode that features the FA Premier League, Bundesliga, French League and Mexican 1st Division. Clearly the GameCube and GBA will not support this online option, but it has yet to be confirmed whether the DS will have any online content.

In addition to this, EA says that FIFA 07 is touting better graphics, more 'intelligent' players and opposition, realistic crowd and game sounds, as well as a great soundtrack.

Joe Booth, producer of FIFA 07 was quoted as saying:

"We are still innovating the gameplay on our current-gen game, and this year, the new online Interactive Leagues will bring together football fans from around the world and allow them to experience the glory and shame of their clubs, 24/7."

To be fair, EA would port FIFA to a cabbage if they thought it could run it, so this isn't exactly a great proclaimation of Gamecube's life force.

A cabbage is probably better. You can use it as a football for longer than you'd play Fifa Smilie

This is one time that I'm happy that the cube does not have online play. EA has shut down their servers for their 2005 themed games for Xbox live. This could be expected with EA games having sequels but some of the games do not have sequels. In contrast, Ubisoft continues to run their servers for all of their games for the PC and PS2.

They are shutting them down because noone uses them. Its common in the world of online games..

FIFA is creeping closer to PES quality, but still is nowhere near it. The problem for Konami is that it has reached a tricky plateau - the question being 'where to go now'. Online matches seems like a good option, mixing in the old ISS scenario matches and possibly tweaking the ISS 2000 RPG mode could be considered...
