Nintendo Rumour | Sonic Does Smash Bros. Brawl?

When every miniscule morsel of information hits the Interweb on one of Nintendo's high profile franchises, Smash Bros., the world goes into speculation chaos. In a recent edition of magazine Tips & Tricks, there's a suggestion that Sonic the Hedgehog could be one of the upcoming fighters in the Wii instalment.

The official Nintendo boards are the source of the magazine's text, which reads:

"Nintendo hopes that Snake's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl will encourage other publishers to allow their characters to join the Smash Bros. line-up, and is already actively negotiating for the rights to include at least one other non-Nintendo character. Both Sakurai and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto have stated that Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog is the character that Smash Bros. fans have requested the most and... well, it's hard to type these words with our fingers crossed!"

Whilst this doesn't confirm any definitive inclusion of Sonic, it's certainly interesting to know that there's a strong chance of more third party characters making appearances, although this was to be expected with the inclusion of Snake into the mix. It's positive news to know that talks have been taken place to discuss possibilities for introducing other guest stars.

Could Sonic the Hedgehog be the next guest to make his debut in the previously Nintendo-only line-up?

Stay tuned for future updates on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Man, Sonic would be an awesome addition. Good to know Nintendo are in talks, if what this magazine says is true. I reckon we'll see more on Brawl either at GDC, or more likely TGS.

Weird, I read earlier somewhere that he hadn't even be discussed.

Even if that were true, I'm 99.9% sure that Sonic will be in Brawl. It's inevitable.

    Edit: When is TGS? Smilie

Sounds like a friggin porn movie...*Debbie Does Dallas, anyone?*

I hope it's true though, because even though most of his own games are crap, he's still a very nice character, and I'd love to control a 3D version of him in a game that actually doesn't suck(pretending the DS version doesn't exisTSmilie)

I'm not that fond of bringing other characters into the mix, but heck Snake's already in, the next best thing is use it to your advantage and open the floodgates Smilie

I'm sure they could figure something out for Pacman if they wanted to. He's as a big an icon as Mario, and bigger than Sonic outside of the gaming world.
I'd like to see Megaman and Viewtiful Joe thrown in as well.

On one hand it is cool to be having other characters in the game; on the other hand, SSMB has always been a Nintendo thing...hopefully these characters won't mess up the game...

I think the inclusion of characters will be limited to franchises that have a longlasting bloodline in videogame history, and that have been on par, and incorporated with great game designers and great game history itself.
I think Pac-Man, Sonic, and MegaMan are great examples of this.
But Nintendo is not going to admit Gon Gon from monkey ball into the game just for the sake of doing so.
Plus, they're atteming to lengthen their already good relationships with publishers who have been around a while, who have the credit under their belt, and who deserve the recognition. Kind of like a flexing of their "Big Daddy Powers" tward the newbies, Sony & Microsoft. Nintendo knows what their doing. Plus, what an honor. Everybody knows, wheather they state publicly or not, that Nintendo is truly the greatest game developer and innovator in the world, and gameing itself, has been waiting a long time for such a symbian salute at what makes this idustry great. Hell, its overdue in my opinion. This is simply another stealth brick of innovation from Nintendo, in an attempt to bring gameing back to the gamers, and away from the stock market.
And what a perfect platform to execute it on.......

    Bring it on Nintendo.
    Bring it on.

Im still keen for a Mario/Sonic game aside from this.

Miyamoto once said they discused it casualy, but couldnt come up with a common framepoint for either setting or gameplay, as the styles were so different.

I agree with this, only I think its precisely why the combination game would be so good.
Dont try to merge the worlds at all, have drastic contrast and changes with style. Do a wario-ware style mix, only with platformers.

Having Sonic would then bring up the question whatother Sonic or Sega characters should be involved? Knuckles, Tails, Billy Hatcher?!

It does sound like a good idea, but i'd rather see Ninty and Sega combine on some sort of mixed Mario/Sonic advaenture game.

I disagree sonic would work. He would have normal fighting moves like any other character and then for his specials
    B- Dash (from rush)
    Down + B - Spin Dash
Up + B - Tails come and picks him up (third jump move)
Left/right + B - Sonic Charges into super sonic and rams any character in his path
The last attack would be like smaus charge attack butyou can't carry the charge over

Probably that he'd turn Super sonic for a brief time for his ultimate, but I guess that's kinda obvious.

maybe he'll creat those whirlwinds off of the original smash bros in Link's level with sonic wind. Spin dash by holding B in the style of Yoshi, and maybe a spring appears for him to do his triple jump. I can imagine tails doing something inspired by yoshi's flutter jump, only with his tails but I'm not sure whether they would include him, too many cooks and all thatSmilie

I'd like to know what type of power-ups he would have and how his speed moves will be implemented, that's if he makes it but i still want MEGAMAN X,Zero or Neo or to a lesser extent Viewtiful joe.

sonic would fit in well but then you have to hope that it doesn't crossover too much. as at a point it would be come another pointless saturated sonic game and well its meant to be nintendo. i dont mind sonic maybe tails but none of the others please. although i hope capcom join in and then we can have some dmc involvement.

Suggest the name Billy Hatcher anywhere NEAR a console again, much less Smash Bros, and I will get severely angry. Terrible character, terrible game, he should be sealed in one of those giant bloody eggs, hurled across the sea to another continent, then be buried and forgotten.

Sonic in Smash Bros., though, is a good idea, and I'm quite sure it's going to happen. This seems to me to be referring to when they got fans to vote who they wanted in the game, and unsurprisingly many must have voted for the lovable hedgehog. Now he needs to bring along a Green Hill Zone stage with him and we're set. Moves aren't too hard to come up with: a homing missile jump, spin dash, dash from Sonic Rush, then a bit of creativity is involved. Have him create whirlwinds around opponents with his speed, have him dashing off and then reappearing behind the opponent to hit them in the back of the noggin (he can run around the world bloody quick, don't you know?), guard by becoming a big spiky ball (the clue's in his full name), become Super Sonic somehow for a limited period of time to cause trouble for everybody. He could also call upon Tails or Knuckles, but to be honest I'd rather keep Smash Bros. free of 'support character' moves.

As for other third party characters, I expect we'll get one or two more. I can only seeing us getting one from each of a few long-standing, respected, Nintendo-friendly third parties. The first would be Konami, with Solid Snake. The second would be Sega, with Sonic. I'd bet if we get a third and fourth they would be Capcom with Mega Man and Namco with a Pac-Man of some sort respectively (or Taizo Hori from Dig Dug - no, not Mr. Driller, his dad).

ugggh, god no! Sonic is fast, he would'nt fit in to smash bros at all. if they made him go super sonic it would be so lame, i dont think nintendo should add any more non nintendo characters in. its starting to sound like a sellout.

Sonic sucks ass anyway. (sonic 2 and 3 was the only good games)

Leon S.Kennedy should be included becuase if he ain't Snake would be this random character with no characters similar to him and bring in Viewtiful Joe he would be well at home considering he was in a Smash Bros sim red hot rumble and i fear iwht Sonic in the game more people will concentrate on him being there than the game itself
