Red Steel has been upgraded since E3, and during the LGC conference last week German Nintendo website, Nintendo-Lan, managed to speak to the game's developers on the issues of graphics, load-times and swordplay.

An IGN reader, Mordrag submitted questions for the website to ask at GDC, and has provided a translation that holds some interesting points on the upcoming Ubisoft FPS.

Mordrag: Hi, in your interview with Ubisoft you could ask how the swordfighting is going to work now, because it was announced to be redesigned. So that the swordmoves aren't predetermined any more but are converted 1:1.

N-LAN: That's the case indeed. The developer has confirmed that the control scheme will be completely redesigned so that the controller moves are converted into the game precisely. Besides the controller sensitivity will be completely adjustable in the final version. And the graphics were improved very well since E3, now the atmosphere is darker and thrilling. But that's not all, there will be even more improvements on the graphics side.

Mordrag: Furthermore you could ask Ubisoft if there are any loading times in Red Steel or in other games on the Wii.

N-LAN: In Red Steel there will be no loading times at all because of smart streaming techniques. How it's handled in other Wii games we can't say at the moment. But it's a fact that Mario Strikers Charged will have loading times similar to the Gamecube version of the game.

We were not told if that will be changed in the future. But we're sure that it will work like on the Gamecube. And as you know the loading times on Gamecube - if they have existed at all - actually were not a big deal.

It's certainly positive news to see the Wii having little to no load times and Ubisoft implementing the controller as effectively as possible.

Red Steel launches alongside the Wii later this year.

    Stick with C3 for updates...

Having the sword movements match your every move is a brilliant move. Having no loading times is also ace. Be nice that you can get the feeling of running around having nothing to stop you i.e. loading times, crappy controls. Woo Smilie

Yup Redsteel has moved from being an after thought to a must buy-at launch title for me, with the Wii console. It's good to see that despite the flurry of new titles announced for the Wii at E3 '06 , such as Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3, which some may say buried Redsteel in the sand, through Ubisofts dedication it has climbed the rung again and has evolved both in graphics and gameplay controls and Ubisoft have never failed to keep us informed about it's progress whether through blogs or interviews.
If most developers and publishers can put in at least half the hours and dedication that Ubisoft have done with Redsteel, then Wii is potentially shaping up to be the best console of this generation.
Let's just hope that Redsteel reviews as good as it looks SmilieSmilieSmilie

Great, great news. I can't wait for this game at launch, guaranteed purchase for me - regardless of the reviews. With the amount of effort Ubisoft seem to be putting behind this title, it deserves success.

I wonder how they solved the enemy-charecter-reaction problem.

I suggested a mirror-image with deviations effect, wonder if they used that techique.

The respect I have for this game has grown exponentially in my eyes. I mean they are doing so many things right, and the graphics they showed us recently already looked good enough. Very happy about the direct conversion of sword movements, I was waiting to bash things using my hands to direct it. Also I am happy about "no loadng times," I have become a little spoilt from gamecube, and find it very frustrating when playing PC to wait for loading.

Agreed. The thing that I really like about the development of Red Steel is the flexibility that Ubisoft have had. They have made tweaks and changes based on peoples thought as well documenting it nicely to the public which is really advertising.Smilie

The free movement of the sword sounds excellent, it will really follow the free control philospohy for the remote. More graphical tweaks also sound very positive.

I like the control-scheme to be completely adjustable - the movement at least.
The tweaked so many things and we seem to be so involved in the process, that these guys deserve my 40 to 50 bucks (Euro). definitely one of my launch-games...

Graphics is looking onderful, by the way. please check the environmental shots on all the screenshots-pages on ign and co...

So much for "you'd need 10 years in Japanese sword training in order to play the game properly" (paraphrased from NGamer Interview). Kinda shows that it was just an excuse for pre-set movements.

Still, good news. Sounds alot more fun.

Its funny because I remember reading that Ubi said that having direct 1:1 movement would require you to be a trained martial artist to complete the game. Ah well. Obv not Smilie

    That's awesome news Smilie

I know that if they had been preset (you swing the controller and the guy swings his sword in a set way, right? like hitting a "slash" button), then a lot of people would be dissapointed... like me Smilie

I've been under the impression it was like this the whole time! Show how much I know, huh?

And the other bits, graphics, loading times, whatever, are very welcome as well. This is a definate must buy from the get go.

Well let's face it... All of us are trained martial artists in our MINDS Smilie

Besides it doesn't exactly take much skill to swing a sword at someone's face >_>

Really sounding good. I hope they put some "weight" on the sword, so It doesn't look as unrealistic in motion as, say, moving a computer mouse from right to left really quickly.

I reckon quite a lot is riding on this game. If all goes well, we'll probably see a lot more FPS on the Wii - other 3rd parties will hopefully go - "If Ubisoft can do it this well, we may as well try it too"
