Nintendo DS Media | FFXII Revenant Wings Trailer

By Jorge Ba-oh 22.09.2006 30

With the Tokyo Games Show running this week Square Enix have been one of the developers on show to reveal their upcoming projects. One of the big hitters is FFXII: Revenant Wings, a new chapter in the Final Fantasy series, exclusive to Nintendo's DS.

The game features Final Fantasy XII characters Vaan and Penelo, with a story of their past, filling in some gaps in FFXII. The title features Vaan as an 18 year old pilot who just managed to get his own plane to travel the skies, with Panelo as his navigator.

Revenant Wings tells the story of Vaan and Panelo, two of the main characters from FFXII. Vaan is 18 years old in the game, and has just fulfilled his dream of getting his own plane. He keeps himself free of politics and family life and travels the skies as an air pirate. The 17-year-old Panelo serves as his navigator.

The company revealed a breathtaking trailer, which is definitely a must watch!

the picture with the tower, which looks a bit like Ivory Tower from 'Neverending Story' and the flying machine can be found on the FFXII Revenant Wings homepage as wallpaper. and that totallyrocks. I so love good artwork and them and the trailer, where the pictures with Vaan and Penelo are taken from, is totally gorgeous - as always!
This game looks totally sexy, like SuperLink said! wow!
I m eager to see some gameplay...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Yeah it's set in Ivalice although not the same one as FFTA more an alternate version. But it's kinda cool seeing all the FFTA species all in 3D Smilie

Once again I'm forced to quote this:

'3. Don't bullshit me about your graphics

How, in 2005, can there still be gamers taken in by EXCLUSIVE SCREENSHOTS of games that are obviously taken from cutscenes and have NO connection with what the actual game will look like? I blame the developers formerly known as Square for this. They're the ones who ran their entire ad campaign for Final Fantasy VIII with shots like this:

...for a game that looked like this:
'

Maybe they could actually show us what the game might look like now and again...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

After about 57 seconds why does the music become music from Zelda? I think it was the ending music to A Link to the Past possibly even when he returns the master sword to its resting place (similar to the sword scene in that video)

Or am I just imagining things?

very easy:
The reason, that in this early stage only cutscenes are released is, that you guys whine like babies when graphics look like shit. They are far from done in this stage of gamedesign and change daily, as you may have experienced with some Wii-graphics. Companies that did release early screenshots nonetheless started howls from millions of graphic nerds and Wii-haters who were after that wuick with remarks how poor Wii graphics look.

So don't complain about trailer and screenshots from cutscenes!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

It dosn't realy matter if they show FMV. It's not like people say "Holy shit them graphics are amazin!" and think it's in game, it's obvious it isn't besides FMV's are gorgoeus to look at and help the story in FF games anyway so meh.
It only matters now in next gen and some current gen games were they use FMV and you can't really tell the diffrence of in game shots but then see it properly in motion for the first time and see that it was all a lie. Like the whole Killzone thing.

It's not from Zelda, it's from Final Fantasy I & IV.

Oh they do... believe me they do...

People sicne E3 2005 were talking about PS3's graphics, when all they had shown was FMV, no in game stuff, yet again, mainstreamers... They know nothing about consoles except Pee ess free & too & won & graphix."

Ooh! I always wondered why the Moogles looked the same as the FFTA ones! Smilie

Yeah but i'm talking more about during PS1 and N64 days were everyone knew that those kinda of graphics were pretty much impossible in real time on the console.
But yeah people can buy into it today because both can look so similer.

^ I think the problem back then was simple people actually accepted CGI cutscenes as game visuals, not everyone was as aware as you seem to remember Blade, (through my experience) alot of people were mislead by this unplayable pap. I recall a conversation I had with some unwitting Sony fangirls into their Final Fantasy's and such, trying hard to convince me the intro to Soul Calibre on the PS1 looked better than any part of Ocarina of Time, mehhhh.

Thankfully they are a lil' more educated now, and are humbled by my presence. Smilie

PS, They wasnt happy with this news though!

Well I did get excited about FMV espcially in Final Fantasy.
FMV's were a nice addition to story focused games bit of a shame the N64 coulnd't have more.

Exactly! They're worth watching, when done right.

^Have you seen the earlier CGI lately j'?

Holy smokes! (#2) Smilie

That is some seriously HOT CG for the DS...clearly the tech used in KH: CoM on GBA has translated wonderfully to the DS Smilie

I too think FMV matters for FF series. The strength and weakness of Final Fantasy series is that ultimately it was made with theatrical show in mind. In the early day interview they were clearly unhappy about a computer's ability (or the lack of) to recreate the imagination and story they were trying to tell to gamers.

20 years on now, they have the technology to begin to do so. I think FF has grown because of their effort to focus on the theatrical nature of FF story-telling. FMV plays an integral role in this.

All that said, what I LOVE about this community here is that we are made up of people who honestly worry about gameplay, so much so that many people voice their concern about gameplay even when a beautiful FMV like this shows up. You'll be surprised how different that is in many other communities.

I see Square is doing a "Sony"Smilie I love doing that. Using names to mock an action.

My friend did a "Winona Ryder"...well that one isn't funny but you get it...

What's the name of the song that kicks in at 58 secs for the second half of the trailer? I'm sure I recognise it from Castle of Illusion for the Mega Drive...

"It's not from Zelda, it's from Final Fantasy I & IV."

thats why i know it from somewhere XD
!

Now HERE is a good example of FMV being used for evilliarSmilie
