Nintendo Wii Media | Sonic and the Secret Rings Screens & Trailer (Update)

By Jorge Ba-oh 22.09.2006 38

Sega have released a selection of new screens of the Wii exclusive Sonic title, Sonic and the Secret Rings, a unique take on our favourite blue hedgehog in an Arabian Nights adventure.

The Wii game is Sonic the Hedgehog's first 3D solo adventure, as he helps a genie fill the missing gaps in the classic Arabian Nights tale. The genie grants Sonic the ability to enter the tale, as Sonic explores a new world to help solve the mystery of the missing pages. Players use the Wii-mote to guide Sonic through a series of new and classic obstacles as Sonic blasts through the world in awesome speed and style.

Update: Sega have updated a hilarious trailer to compliment the new screens:

Be sure to check out the game's screen album below for more new shots.

Hmm, doesn't look incredible when captured still in screens, but still doesn't seem too bad! Can't wait for this game, although I am worried that it seems to be on rails..

I see a nicely reflection-mapped hedgehog, some bloom effects- other than that, nothing that sets it apart from gamecube. Course, it'll have be 1000x funner! Hip hip horra for sonic.

*lol* the short story overview sound hilarious. I love it!
It sure does not look that great, exept in screenshot 1, but remember, that Sonic always was fast like cray and the graphics have to stand back against that: fast and not that detailed, no?
I have to see a new Secret Rings trailer to check the graphic.
But the story sounds very funny, hopefully, they keep up the style of the story and have a lot of ingame jokes. Then I will consider this game worth buying, even if I'm not fond of 3D-Sonic...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Eh? I can really see the improvement in graphics! It looks amazing! WHY CAN'T YOU! :-o

Maybe it's my Sonic senses kicking in. Oh SHIT! :-o

EDIT: The story sounds funny? Smilie

No, it sounds not 'funny' but it sounds funny like in 'wonderful, you can make some jokes with it, consider a Aladin-based djinny telling you to fill up some gaps in Arabian Nights a dumb prince has caused'...

And the graphics have improved, but maybe the (we) all expect too much. the curved surfaces are looking a bit blocky for instance. But that's why every 3D environment should never been presented in stills but only in trailers!

As always with sonic games we should wait until seeing it in movement, it's simply unfair to judge stills.

Yep, the recently released trailer (in here somewhere) looks absolutely awesome! Then again the trailer I saw was teeny tiny, so you know Smilie

I'm worried though. I do want some slowed down platform elements, or the ability to walk around a bit as it does seem a bit weird on rails/constantly being forced to move.

I'll try to find a link to the new trailer, meanwhile, it seems that tons of people are completely turned off by the fact the game is on rails, my friend who's a Sonic fan too says it looks crap Smilie

Sonic Team could do with angering Sonic fans though, I'm a great believer that one of the big reasons why there has been such a dip in quality is they pander too much to the fanboys at the expense of changing game play and setting.

They ARE angry! Smilie They HATED Shadow & Sonic Riders ('cept me Smilie) & they all want Sonic 2006 on Wii. SEGA Are just ignoring them.

Anyway, I still think Sonic & The Magic Rings looks amazing, I'm reinforced on that because the 3 new (ish) trailers look brilliant

Oldish one
New Gameplay one
New weird Japanese advert one

Lol at the 3rd one Smilie

Fantastic graphics, the visuals are cleaner and sharper than any Sonic game that I saw on the Fading Gen. consoles. However, idea of constantly running non stop through stages has given me mixed feelings about this game. If SEGA are trying to return to their roots, then they should remember that Sonic on the Megadrive included and gave a choice of just speeding to the end of a stage or spending a bit more time with exploration. Now THAT's what got many people into the franchise in the first place.

Just updated the story with the single most cheesy/funny video I've seen today! ROFL.Smilie

The "Sonic the Hedgehog" game for PS3/Xbox360 looks more like "Sonic Heroes 2" from the trailer.
They added FF style cutscenes, but that only makes it worse.
Seems we got the better deal here, if anything, by default.

It's looking great, it is a big improvment over early dreamcast graphics they have been content on using for years.

jb when did you change your mind? A while ago I was the only person here who was pissed about it being on-rails...

If the game is simply a case of randomly waving the controller around like that kid was doing then this will without a doubt be the shittest game ever...

(I just watched the Sonic 2006 trailer and... What the hell? Why is it trying to be a movie trailer? Why is Robotnik so SKINNY!!?!?!? And why the hell doesn't Secret Rings looks anywhere near as good? [excluding Shadow and Silver of course])

I dunno the on rails aproach could help simplify it, 3D sonic are just too damm awkward to controle compared to the 2D ones.

Have you seen some of the Sonic 2006 screens... they really look as bad, well, slightly better character models.

Didn't really pay much attention to the on rails but until more recently - I wouldn't mind some sections being on rails, but others could do with analogue stick movement which it won't have it seems - but I do remember there being some slower sections where you had to stop, and carefully move around obstacles - what happened to that?

You'd look a right twat being like that kid!

God no, please no slow section were you clumsily move around with an analoge stick Smilie.

XBL Gamertag: James2t3

The slow section still uses the tilt sensing... You just have to hold it to the right for a few minutes while Sonic edges his way around stupidly easy to avoid obstacles...

And when I said 'As good' I meant gameplay-wise... I don't think there's ever been much problem with 3D Sonic games. It wasn't the control scheme that sucked, but the fact that it wasn't tested enough, and ended up being really buggy... Just like the Prince of Persia games.

Well then how come you don't like the look of Sonic on 360 & PS3? It looks to change all that! So it's a game you should be happy with (except of course, Shadow & Silver)

EDIT: Prince of Persia Sands of Time FTW!

I do like the look of the new Sonic game... Haven't you noticed me praising it over Secret Rings? Except for Shadow and Silver of course... I WON'T SHUT UP UNTIL THEY BOTH DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH!!

(Sands of time was the best of the three, and even that one was pretty buggy... It felt to me like they never even tested them, especially Warrior Within)

Sands Of Time was good, amazingly fun acrobatics.

Anyway, I really like the look of this. Seems have to potential to be great at the more difficult stages. Hopefully some kind of Extreme mode is included, where you need lightning reflexes to get the best possible completion time.
