Industry News | Nintendo: "Wii Will Sell 4 Million in 2006"

With the console wars continuing to build momentum in the weeks leading to the biggest hardware launches in recent times, both Nintendo and Sony have been spurting all sorts of pre-launch figures and promises to show their commitment to the industry and their potential user base.

With Sony facing potential stock issues in the run up to the Christmas 2006 period, Nintendo have begun to take advantage of the situation by offering a smug comment with their aims and expectations for the Wii launch, sales wise. Speaking to IGN, the company went on board to say that they expect to sell 4 million Wiis globally by the end of the year.

"A number of outlets have reported a misstatement about the number of Wii consoles that will be available in the Americas during the launch rollout. In fact, the truth is even better. After the Americas lead the worldwide launch on Nov. 19, Nintendo expects to sell 4 million Wii consoles globally by the end of 2006, with the largest allotment available in the Americas.

Although we expect a huge demand for the consoles, we are working to ensure a plentiful supply and a consistent flow."

Certainly positive news from Nintendo and good to know that they seem to have the Wii launch period well under control.

I'm confident that the Wii will be a success but please don't let this be a case of pride before a fall.

I hope so too, this seems like a more confident side to Nintendo though! Hopefully they're onto something right Smilie

Your welcome for the news tip SmilieSmilie. Anyhoo, this seems ambitious on Nintendo's part and this can only be a good thing. The fact that the DS is selling so well must surely re-inforce their ambition and it's a welcome change to sitting on the fence etc Smilie

I sincerely doubt it. 4 million in two months? This holiday season is going to be interesting...

Hasn't the 360 sold just 6 million in an entire year? I think four million in just two months would be pretty impressive...

im looking forward to seeing if nintendo can achive that. if they can it will be a success on a monumental scale, if they go for fiscal year then im not that sure but if they mean calender year then i think its more than likely

Cube sold how much? 40 Million in 5 years all over the world? So to achieve 4 millions seems to be okay for me. I hope they get it and they ignited a hype. Early adopters and core gamer wanting Wii have increased. Wii is cool everywhere I read...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

true laurelin, everytime i hear something about wii, its that its the console for everyone and its the coolest one to have and that the innovation of wii is the future, okay that was a nintendo quote lol, but yer would be nice to see it sell that many and the fanbase has increased massively so its looking more and more likely

If they release it in all colours at launch, yes. I for one refuse to buy it unless I can get a black one...

The CUBE nor the Xbox got near 40 million 21m and 23m respectively.

As for 4m achieved easily the 360 has done terrible it hasn't passed 5m something like 4.5m which is down right terrible the 360 is destined for last place this gen in my view.

40 Million in 5 years all over the world?

Nowhere near.

Wikipedia:

Nintendo reported that as of June 30, 2006 they have sold a total of 21.00 million Nintendo GameCube units worldwide. Nintendo has sold 4 million in Japan, 12.27 million units in the Americas, and 4.72 million units elsewhere

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

4 Million? Smilie

Generally, I would never quote Wikipedia as a fact. It is a great place to find sources for facts though.

But anyway...

I do find 4 million a lot considering they only have 2 months. What is fascinating, though, is the unknown factor. Because they are going into a territory nobody else has ventured, we can't really derive a conclusion based on the world we know. Nintendo must have done a lot of research in this field, and therefore, they are bound to know about this "unknown area" better than I do. At least that's the way I look at it.

DS has been a good example. There were many people out there (including myself) who were enthusiastic and hopeful of DS, yet never quite imagined the extent of its success. I've been a Nintendo enthusiast for decades. Yet, when I heard about DS specs and 2 screens (and a touchpad) I must confess that it troubled me for many months. I knew it would work in some ways, but I never thought it would be as successful. If you would have asked the general public or a tech expert about this, most would have laughed in your face saying DS is fighting a war they can't win. Funny, we don't hear very often from them today. Even worse, it seems some of them are doom-calling Wii already. Dejavu, anyone?

Of course, this doesn't mean Wii will necessarily be a success. But I must ask myself, what has Nintendo shown us over the past year? The answer is, the gaming market is predictable, but Nintendo's market is not. In fact, Nintendo's market is as volatile as it could possibly be.

Actually, talking of which, even Brain Training did better than I thought in the UK. I thought us Brits simply wouldn't buy this sort of thing at all. Funny coicidence that, ain't it.

Nintendo has pulled off too many surprises in recent years. 4 million Wii is A LOT. I must admit, I am skeptical. But I will also admit, if they pull it off, it wouldn't be the first surprise they pulled off this year. Far from it.

Maybe they meant ship? Sony are always making that mistake too Smilie
