With the release of the Wii growing scarily close, various tidbits of information have been leaked onto the Internet. Images of the Wii's packaging contain a contents list with an interesting addition - a Wii start-up disc.

Gaminfgg blog Wiixors posted the images after encountering the Wii-box at a local branch of EB Games. Speculation on the Internet has lead people to believe it's a system update for content and applications that weren't implemented during manufacturing; others think it's referring to "Wii Sports".

A fairly interesting addition to the Wii package line-up, be sure to stay tuned for updates.

wii sports. nuff said.

Yeah saw this aa minute ago was going to submit.

Opera seems to be included from the get-go.

Wii start-up disc? Maybe it is a disc of the games coming out for the Wii and how to take full use of the Wii Channels and interface

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

Maybe we can run windows!11!11!!!!1Smilie

Most likely:
Latest OS/dashboard patch, Wii Sports and LOADS of demo videos.

That way they can just update the startup disc in the box with the latest patches and demo videos every few months.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

^ yeah, that makes sense. Wii's operating system is upgradable etc, so they just bundle a start up disc so you can install the O/S yourself.

Sounds like fun.

My thoughs too.

It would be great if at least one of the many sites reposting this would contact Nintendo for comment and clarification, preferably before posting about it.

I reckon it just means Wii Sports but it just says Wii Start Up Disc instead.

i doubt the o/s will be updateable from the disc drive, simply because it opens it up to hacking.
I imagine the most likely contents = wii sports (which we know is included yet not mentioned) and possibly demo's.

having upgrades would just seem really lazy, surely the o/s on the machines would be upto date enough to function, any additional drivers can be obtained from the net

my guess is many non-gamers see the "nunchuck" written there and actually believe one is packaged. Smilie

^ then they open it....

Gutted.

"What is this plastic shit?"

i think it's a disc with virus on it which'll destroy the wii whenever it's inserted.

hmmm interesting, like grumbler its probbaly the OS install disc!?!?

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I reckon it's Wii Sports... it's confirmed to be included, but isn' mentioned on the box otherwise, so I assume that's it...

Start up disk ? hmmm, it could mean many things, i doubt it would be referring to Wii Sports, but then again i suppose it could, maybe it is just how you start up the system, or maybe as it has been said, a way of updating the console with things not currently installed, maybe it is a way for installing the components you want and don't want.

Having the OS being updatable from the disc drive wasn't a problem for microsoft with the 360, you can order a disc with the latest updates so that people who don't connect to the internet can get them. besides, how on earth would you make it not updatable from the disc drive? It all goes through the same RAM you know.

Yes the OS would be flashed into the system during manufacture, but if you're stockpiling thousands of motherboards, you're likely to get a newer version of the OS during that, especialy during the run up to launch when the software is still being developed and tested. Do you reflash each individual system yourself, or do you just throw a cheap disc in the box and put a line in the instruction manual telling people to run the startup disc first.

They can't rely on people connecting to the net, because not everyone will - fact. LOADS of people probably won't connect for a few months, because there are no online games around launch and you need an adapter and a cable to connect if you don't have a wireless router (most people).

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yes..also...how is a disc less secure then the net Smilie

My bet is also an OS update + purhapes some introduction thingy.
Maybe a one-off config thing.

oh, and as for security:
RSA..probably 128 or 256bit encrpytion.

The DS's encrpytion hasnt been broken yet either. Allthough it has been got around in a few ways.

Then they're going to charge usSmilie

Yeah it's bound to be Wii Sports since it's not listed.

I'd be bold enough to say that I think it'd just be the startup disc for OS updates too...I mean, they don't even need to box it, and it could probably be put on a (cheaper?) GC disc to save (money?) and space.

If it's some weird OS disc or whatever, then WHERE THE HELL IS Wii SPORTS!?

That is what I ask... Smilie

Maybe the updates and Wii Sports are in the same disc!

Maybe Wii sports comes semi-seperately (outside the box), so that it feels free.

Buy a Wii and get Wii sports free!
rather than
Buy an Wii which includes a game that isn't even good enough to come on a proper disc!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.
