Nintendo DS News | Final Fantasy XII Details Emerge

By Adam Riley 04.11.2006 14

People were stunned when Square Enix announced that it would be bringing a version of Final Fantasy XII to the DS. Now more details on Revenant Wings have been unveiled in an interview between Japanese magazine Dengeki and the Director and Scenario writer of Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings, Motomu Toriyama and the co-Producer, Eisuke Yokoyama.

The Nintendo DS game has quickly become one of the most wanted games for the system and is already reportedly nearing the halfway point in development. Whereas many originally believed the game would be set before the PlayStation 2 game, it is actually a short time after. The game takes place on the floating continent of Puruvama, as well as the ground below it, with pirate Vaan in search of treasure. Yokoyama states that whilst it would be impossible to fit the entire world of Ivalice from the PS2 game, gamers will be able to visit the majority of the main locations.

There will be several episodes included during play that build up to a vast, epic FF tale and comes complete with a new combat system that uses the stylus control and includes a simplified version of Gambits - a little bit of familiarity so veteran FFXII gamers are not too confused by the change. Yokoyama also goes on to talk about how there will be many more characters added to the group in comparison to the original FFXII, as well as Fran and Balthier.

Summoning wil play a big part of the proceedings, with the summon creatures being vital to battle encounters, but being used in a different way to previous Final Fantasy games. Toriyama plans to make good use of the DS features, with events, battles and game systems all using both screens to full effect. However, at the moment it looks like Wi-Fi connectivity is being left out until something can be sorted out with the terrible issue of slowdown due to lag.

And that is where it concluded, leaving us thirsty for more.

Seeing as Square-Enix are supporting the DS with two great looking games and they aren't technically tied to Sony, getting the DS and PS2 versions of FFXII won't affect the Sony Boycot.

This is definitely one of my most-anticipated DS games of 2007...The more S-E support the better! Smilie

It's like the SNES days all over again Smilie

Do you think it would be best to play the PS2 version first before playing this?

From my understanding you should play, in this order
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings (DS)

since FF XII came out before Revenant Wings it is good to play the PS2-game before, than Revenant Wings.

/edit: this seems to be a hint, that FF XII DS (look at all the capital letters! they are shining...) seems to be a classic FF, not like Crystal Chronicles, which took me aback a bit. I liked it very much and was into it. But it was no Final Fantasy like them on PS2.
I would like to play a classic Final Fantasy on Wii. Square-Enix, please...? *looking cute*

No chance of that.

Summonings are essential? Uh-oh...I can hear Lost Magic...

^yeah I think that it'll have the whole touch screen interaction too.

After Opera reading the IGN review of the PS2 game to me yesterday I am pretty excited about the possibilities of the DS version.

I am actually playing thry Vagrant story ATM too, its a fantastic game. Love it! Altho I prefer the original FF Tactics over the GBA version.

They should just make Tactics 2.

Tactics on the DS would be good...but it's not the same as a FF game...not really...(to my mind better though...but doubt many would agree...)

Final Fantasy 12 should hopefully be released next feb(europe) so this game will definately not be out until long after that. Have there been any gameplay screens yet?

I wish S-E can port over FFXII on the Wii, and provide some connectivity with the DS FFXII version (i.e. transferring skills and abilities as if continuing the story, which it is).
