Sony PS3 Impressions: Is This Living?
Mike Mason :: 27th November 2006

It was a moody day, very befitting for what was yet another in a long line of days of excruciating boredom/mental pain caused by higher education. Barely able to keep my eyes open, I was being fed reams of data about such positive things as language death and heart-stoppingly exciting concepts such as Lambda expressions. Then, like a ray of sunlight parting the clouds, the text bleeped through on my mobile. "PS3. Playable."

Alright, so it perhaps wasn't as depressing a day as it might sound, but dreariness was still abound and the message was still a wake-up call. Thanks to my always-reliable man-on-the-street/contact/general accomplice, I was potentially about to become one of the first in the UK to give Sony's next-generation console a good going-over (cheers, Sy!). With a spring in my step, especially after the disappointment of a non-playable Wii the other day at Virgin Megastore, I hopped onto a bus to find myself...stuck in traffic. Excellent. A little while of foot-tapping later I was propelling myself off of said bus to find the way to my Playstation-shaped prize...

Surprisingly (and thankfully), the crowd for the Playstation 3 wasn't large. In fact, it was non-existent. Now, the shop

I'm going to Manchester on Wednesday, passing through Piccadilly Airport too so I'll take a look in.

Otherwise, a very nice and thorough write-up Mason. I'm glad you've stated that the size of the console is exaggerated, and that it looks quite slick - that's what it's all about in a bachelor pad Smilie

I'm sure with time though, as you mentioned, the PS3 will boast amazing advancements. I'm looking forward to getting my PS3 in about 2 years, when the large, good-looking games library is available, as well as the console at a reasonable price.

Thank you !

Creating New Sig...Eventually

Good article Mason, well done! Smilie
And im guessing you aint talking about Picadilly Circus in London?!?!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I think its more telling the PS3 dosnt look noticably better then the Xbox360 from the off.
Sure, all systems get better looking games as time goes on, but sony was quite strongly infering they would win this gen on brute force.
If it isnt noticeable, it isnt a saleing point, imo.
Especialy as the 1080p 120fps claim has now be discarded.

Also, we must remember, the Xbox360 is hardly being pushed yet. Most games still arnt using both cores to the full.

I think its sad a lot of fuss over the PS3 about stuff the Xbox360 is already doing.
Like someone I knew was so excited by the fact they could download stuff on the PS3. Or use it as a music center.
You can download on the 360 *while* your playing a game, and you can listen to mp3 tracklits during any game. (not so for the ps3)

The PS3 might be a mighty beast somewhere in there, but it just dosnt seem to be well thought out...at least not compared to the Xbox360 and the Wii.

"and Sony will finally be in-line with Microsoft and Nintendo efforts."

Theres more wrong with the design then analogue sticks, imo.
Normaly a game has one main action button, and other secondary buttons.
The main action button should be the easiest, biggest, most comfortable to hit.
The PS1/2/3 dosnt have this. All 4 buttons have equal weightings, which dosnt fit most games.

Sony should take more risks and try out new designs, imo.

Good article Mason!

The other day, I was in my local target. I was walking around the game section, when I spied the PS3 kiosk--and no one in sight. I have to say I was kinda excited. I ran over to the kiosk, and low and behold the system was frozen. Great. lol

Remember Darkflame when Sony was trying to be somewhat unique in their controller design (Boomerang controller) their fanbase lashed out on them for actually trying something different...

I've had a go on the PS3 too- a press debug kit anyway. Just to add to your article, it does get covered in fingerprints! I played the Japanese version of Ridge Racer with no sound so I wouldn't talk about that- I would say that I thought motostorm was the only game worth having that I played, out of about 5 or so.

Anyway, nice article! Smilie

True, but that didnt really have a different button layout either.

Fantastic article Mason and I strongly agree with you Sony's PS3 shouldn't be excluded from the race just yet.

Much as I hate the fact hate Sony treats European gamers as second-class citizens and have so far botched a lot up with the PS3, I do believe that their second wave of games onwards will show-off the real power of the machine. Of course I want Nintendo to seriously "Thwack" them this generation around but the PS brand is a force to be reckoned with.

Ok let's consider one important fact. With Wii Nintendo is trying to maintain hardcore gamers as well as reaching out to casual gamers from allwalks of life not to mention bump up their female demographic. Sony's Playstation brand (the PSone and PS2 respectively) has sold through 100million consoles. Now at least a third of them are female so apart from givng them "new ways to play" how can you convince them to opt for a console that thus far has invited ported games from it's fading gen rival with tacked on "revolutionary controls but look far "fuglier" than they did on the PS2.

Wii's only "weakness" is it's visuals and don't expect Sony and Microsoft not to exploit this to their own advantage. My advice to Nintendo is to discourage games developes last gen ported tripe unto their new gen consoles and build games from the ground up otherwise it'll seriously hurt their goals in the future.

All 3 consoles are poised to win the console war in their own unique way so I wouldn't undersetimate any of them. Better yet Neither of the 3 companies should underestimate each other aswell.

Like JonnieRy I may consider picking up a PS3 in two years time assuming that the price has dropped and all the launch bugs have been ironed out.
Wii on the other hand is gettng the launch treatmenat. Just hope I can pick up an RGB cable along with it.Smilie( Edited on 28.11.2006 11:13 by OLU1701 )

Hmm, much as I hate PS3, I refuse to be fanboyish about the whole subject...so it's a good article to read. I do think the PS3 has a pretty poor line-up (even those who don't like the Wii line-up surely think the PS3s is worse?). The main problem is just that hefty price tag...there's no way I'd ever pay that much...even if the hardware justified it. It's more than my PC cost! Though in fairness I as of yet have no gfx card.
Eh, but once the price comes down then they may be in for more of a shot with the console. If Ninty and Microsoft don't already have too much of a lead.

Yeah, it sure is nice when I saw it at Armagedon Expo...And the visuals...they will outrun the Xbox360 in about two years believe me. Just wait for Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts on it and you'll see the real difference. Those six cores aren't just for talk.

I can't see the PS3 being anything more than a success in one area, whether it be home entertainment, videogames or something completely different. If Sony sells 60 million and the majority use it just for Blu-Ray movies, does it win the console "war"? Smilie

I'm going to Manchester in a few weeks, maybe it won't have been robbed by then (Smilie), and I can have a go. Smilie

Bluray/HHDVD are stop-gap dead-end technologys for people with good tvs, but gubble, big wallets.

HD films fit on a MP4/Divx compressed normal DVD, if the industary could be bothered.

Microsofts got a good idea with thier downloads mind. And apple are launching a wireless PC>>TV transmitter that will send upto HD quality to a tv. (probably be too expensive, but many devices will pop up once apple does it).

Ta for all the comments guys. I'd advice everybody gets a go of it if possible - just don't expect anything too innovative. I want Sony to bring proper demo kiosks over so I can give Sixaxis a go...

You don't have to go to Manchester to play it I don't think - apparently many CEXs around the country are getting them in. Smilie

I actually read the article properly. You study linguistics?

Semantics and Effability and Sapir-Whorf FTW!

I prefer a bit of deixis myself. Smilie

(Actually, semantics and Sapir-Whorf are two of the best parts of it Smilie)

its crazy the amount of reads this article has had Smilie but its good, very fun to read Smilie i'll see if i can have a go when i'm in manchester next week

*wonders if my local CEX has a PS3 in...remains doubtfull*

Worth a check! Apparently quite a few do, from what I've heard many have got Resistance and Ridge Racer 7 in. I didn't check if they had Resistance in mine though, I should probably go back to see.

*Is thankfull he has to go to town tomorrow on a school trip* I think i'll just accidently "get lost" and just "find" my way to CEX Smilie

Has anybody else gotten to play it yet?

Had another go on RR7 today...still lots of fun!

Woooooooo!!!

Very informative topic.
But isn't the ps3 to big?

No, it isn't if you see it first person. It's not that much bigger than 360.

once again another quality write up from Mason. Well im quite shocked by what youve said though, in terms of it telling everyone not to count PS3 out at such an early stage which is fair becuase Wii was wrote off completley until E3 and now look at it. But it should be interesting to see where PS3 is this time next year, thats when I feel we can truly gauge what the PS3 is capable of and whether it is capable of bringing back the sales defecite from Wii and 360
