Industry News | Nintendo: Wii Have a Major Success!

By Adam Riley 28.11.2006 24

Nintendo's new system, the Wii, has only been on the US market since 19th November. However, it has already gone on to out-pace the PlayStation 3 by a large amount. Despite shortages, Nintendo has tried to pull out all the stops to supply gamers with the new console. Below is the full Press Release that came out this morning:

Built on a foundation of pure fun, Nintendo's new Wii video game system sold through to more than 600,000 consumers in the Americas in just its first eight days of availability. That's a rate of nearly one per second continuously since the Nov. 19 launch.

Including just first-party software and accessory sales, Wii instantly has become a $190 million business in the Americas.

During the Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, there was plenty of conversation across the nation about the high demand for the Wii system, with the acknowledgment that if you see one, you'd better buy it.

"Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units, demand continues to exceed supply, as it's clear this is one of the 'gotta-have' products for the holiday season," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We've shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time -- and we still sold out.

Given the inclusive nature of Wii game play, we're seeing this new form of video gaming is already a huge hit with gamers and newcomers alike. It continues to be a phenomenal launch."

The system also is succeeding in its stated mission of reinvigorating current players, while attracting new ones. Every Wii system includes the five-game Wii Sports(TM) software, which is the talk of the Internet, featuring countless reports on how previously devout non-gamers have suddenly been converted via the amazing new way games are experienced using the system's remarkable controller.

At the same time, the masterful The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a favorite of avid gamers, already has achieved sales of more than 454,000 units in the Americas, representing more than 75 percent of all hardware purchasers.

Licensees, pleased not only with the sales performance of the Wii, but also its creative development capabilities, are publicly sharing their comments:

"Madden NFL 07 is a great example of how the Wii gives players a whole new experience on their favorite games," says EA Studio President Paul Lee. "EA's creative teams are working to build more Wii features into some of our most popular franchises."

"The creativity we've been able to unleash on the Wii system with our game Red Steel has been eye-opening for our development teams," explains Ubisoft President Laurent Detoc. "Having the opportunity to design and develop entirely new game-play experiences using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk is both exciting and rewarding."

Classic games also are proving to be a hit on Wii, which offers downloadable access to 20 years of the best of Nintendo, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx16 hits via the system's Virtual Console feature.

Wow.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a favorite of avid gamers, already has achieved sales of more than 454,000 units in the Americas...

Not bad, not bad Smilie

Decent sales, a good start for the Wii - hopefully this will increase and stay constant with some decent first/third party stuff in 07.

Hmm, I wonder how many classic titles have been downloaded so far Smilie

For the moment Nintendo may be winning the battle but they still have their work cut out if they're to stand any chance of winning the War. You yourself once said that we won't really know the true outcome to this Next Gen. War until about Christmas 2007.

I am happy that Wii really has a had a major headstart over the PS3 but until PS3 is available in Europe and starts shipping Worldwide in justifyable quantities, then we won't know for sure what the market situation is going to be like in this console era

Great news!

The Wii definitely seems to be doing something right, I mean, does anyone remember this amount of praise from all sides when the game cube was released?

I really do feel that the Wii will

Hopefully some more interesting developers will make games for it now.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Yeah, hopefully they will! I know a lot of people do not agree with me, but I would love to see some Rockstar games on the Wii - I did love GTA

im not a big fan GTA.. but having a game on the Wii will bring loads of fans the the Nintendo! Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

To be honest the Wii has more interesting developers than the 360 or PS3 has onboard;
NiBRiS and Crossbeam studios etc.

I wouldn't hold my breath on the promise of seeing titles from either of those developers. I'd love to be proved wrong, and for them to be great games, but I just envision them never arriving.

Uhmmm NIBRIS have 2 Wii games in development with Crossbeam having 3 underway

Yes I know that Mr Ashcroft, but will they ever actually be released? That's the part I doubt.

Both are completely unproven developers and pinning your hopes for Wii development on them seems a bit risky.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong and that Sadness, Thorn and Orb are fantastic, mature, in-depth games that will have 'hardcore' gamers flocking to the Wii. I just don't think I will be.

Sadness is slated for 2008 (fall)...which is 2 years away OMFG!!!

Hopefully the company doesn't go bankrupt before then.

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

Lets hope developerrs latch on to the new wii-mote and wont end up like the gamecube. . . . dead within a year of lauch. Smilie

No chance of that.

The PS3 would be exactly the same if they hadn't had shortages..

Dude yuor totally awesome. And i won't be killing you anytime soon.

I just wonder how long it will take Sony to actually have a steady supply of PS3s reaching the shops. They seem to be having a really hard time with production. If they don't start meeting demand quickly then the competition will just get too far ahead. If that happens, then it doesn't matter how good the PS3 may have been, developers will go where the customers are.

That, of course, is why the launch year is so important. At the moment, Sony's launch is more of a pseudo-launch.

Can someone provide me with some PS3 figures and statisics from the United States to compare it with?

I came across some stats and now i can't find them. Typical, though probably unconfirmed or educated estimates.

Red Steel...Hah! What a disappointment that is. They'll obviously make a sequel so I'll buy that instead.

For reference NPD put the November (from 22nd release) and December Xbox 360 sales at 600,000. Not half bad that Wii moved more systems before November's end than Microsoft managed in the month following Smilie

Edit.

Can someone provide me with some PS3 figures and statisics from the United States to compare it with?

277,000 or so rings a bell? I'll probably do a years-end Industrial Gaming on the various launch regions and sales when I'm on holiday in a month.

well apparetnly Micorsoft said that they sold more X360 then Wii & PS3 combined together... Smilie i smell bullshit!

Of course Microsoft have sold more 360s than Wii and PS3 combined so it's not bullshit they've had a year's headstart quite a bit of media exposure. PS3 and Wii have only just launched and not worldwide or in steady supply either so you can't really make a sales figure comparison between any of the three consoles until at least Christmas 2007.

So Chlidren stop comparing sales figures until then....because that's when the real console war will begin

But the XB360 will still be a year ahead. So lets start comparing figures, cause the war HAS just begun.

Vote 1, Eternal Darkness 2 for Wii

Nibris are definately going to come up with something, can't think of a reason why not since they've already got developement kits, a publisher and outsourcing arrangements with other developers. We;ll see in the spring when they're first games are due out.

Crossbeam seem more like students with big ideas but no means, and Orb sounds shit.

No it's not, it's down Q4 07 to Q1 08.

Good point Trace but by Xmas 2007, both Wii and PS3 consoles will be in steady supply so then we'll get a clearer picture as how their figures stack up against 360's
