Industry News | Dyack Talks Eternal Darkness Sequels

By Adam Riley 05.12.2006 20

Silicon Knights founder, Denis Dyack, has been busy updating his blog lately. Now, the reason for this being of interest to us is due to him bringing up the GameCube classic 'Eternal Darkness'. Here is a direct quote:

"I am most often asked if we have sequels in mind for Eternal Darkness. The answer is absolutely yes. Although this may not be obvious to those outside of Silicon Knights, anyone inside the guild understands that there is really no other answer. When creating an original game we start by conceptualising an entire universe. Once the universe is conceptualized we then tell a story within that world.

"After creating numerous worlds over the years, developing a trilogy is just a natural progression in our game making process. Eternal Darkness and Too Human all fall under the same umbrella of universes that we created. We have many stories to tell within these worlds so this time around we felt it was time to tell more than just one."

So it has once more been reconfirmed that Eternal Darkness will likely be turned into an eventual trilogy, just like Too Human. But considering how Eternal Darkness was plagued with delays, pushing it from the N64 to GameCube and Too Human originated on the PSone (now XBOX 360!), it could be quite a while before we see anything.

And the other matter is that the Canadian developer no longer has Second Party status with Nintendo, so is not obliged to bring any future games related to ED onto a Nintendo platform. Thankfully, though, Dyack has previously stated that he does not rule out working with Nintendo in the future, following the collaboration between Silicon Knights, Nintendo and Konami worked out so well for Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Too Human looks fantastic.
It was going to be a 4 disc PS1 game, and Nintendo did a deal with them before it was released. (Im tempted to think Nintendo did the deal because they saw how good Too human was)

The bad thing is this 80-hour PS1 game has been split into 3 shorter games due to the cost of having improved graphics.
However,the game still looks aswume.
Plus, its set around a Space Elivator..which is officialy, the coolest,sci-fi concept ever.
Whats more, unlike many other sci-fi concepts, Space Elivators are completely possible according to physics.

wait a mo...wheres this blog? :-/

Its starting to sound like odd news , because all i can find is the too human blog.

I just hope it will be on the Wii.

the only chance of it being on the Wii exclusively if the developer are strapped for cash and can't afford to dabble onto the PS3 or 360, especially the former

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

i thought it was a little sly of Silicon Knights to use the Nintendo meal-ticket to cash in on MGS, then take the know-how and connections they amassed to the evil micro$haft. So now 360 isnt all that they hoped in terms of (the most important aspect of all to a developer) sales, they look back to Nintendo and decent sales figures. sorry guys you jumped ship too soon, eh?

Never heard of Too Human... ED was probably one of the most overrated GC games ever too... Wouldn't mind a sequel though

This is from July! Are we in a time warp or is C3 just taking it's news from Digg?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Nintendo owns the Eternal Darkness IP (atleast I'm pretty sure), so the game would have to be on the Wii or DS.

Eternal Darkness must come to the Wii or else i shall send a suicide dummy to bomb the place.

Silence is the loudest noise we could possibly hear.

Nope, it's a Silicon Knights IP, and rightly so. They had everything to do with creating it, Nintendo just published it.

I think Miyamoto dipped his schlong in a little actualy, but no more than any other publisher would.

A sequel to Eternal Darkness would be fabulous. I adored that game, especially the sanity effects.

Must go check out this Too Human thing now...

I loved Eternal Darkness, but you have to play for a while before you really "get into it". Still it's a damn good game, the style of game that I prefer over the GTA style, and that's saying something for me...

That's why No More Heroes will be the game that feeds every part of my soul (to put it lightly)....Smilie

Lol @ Megadanxzero Smilie

So this story isn't going to be taken down then?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.
