About Zelda in Japan. I think there are 2 parts to this:
First, while Zelda is a well known franchise in Japan, the west is more 'obsessive' towards Zelda (and Metroid might I add). Zelda never was as big a name as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy in NES days. In comparison, the west were generally untouched by Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy only became well known from around 7 - so Zelda had had plenty of time to penetrate the west.
Secondly, DS in Japan nurtured "brain training" crowd far more than in the west. Wii inherits the similar image - crowd friendly, light hearted and not smeggy. So there is likely to be less percentage of Wii owners who fall into "hardcore" crowd than here. Instead, that "hardcore" crowd is likely to go for the one which inherits the PS2 image i.e. PS3. We may see a big polarization in this generation in Japan (unless PS3 fails).
But I think in a long run, Zelda will still sell well there. They just won't buy it as obsessively as we do.
