Well it was much more expensive and for a more limited audience.. how is this surprising?

You mean HD-DVD? How come? When Nintendo sold half a million Wii and there are so much X360s out there in the U.S., how can you say it's more expensive? there are potentially much more buyer of HD-DVD - or so it seemed.

Not really. Everyone that wants to play Wii multiplayer in their own home will want another controller. Only X-Box 360 owners that have a HDTV and want to risk their money on a format that might fail will buy a HD DVD add on.

This is my newer, bigger, reasonably sized signature. I hope it's not too big.

Hmm. Well yeah, but that's a bit like saying Tesco sold more milk than cows last month.

    Ok:

Cost of utility for a extra nintendo wiimote:
Standard tv (which everyone already has)
    Wii
    Extra remote

    ..Thats it.

Cost of use for a 360 HDDVD add on:
HDTV (really 1080p for full use)
    Xbox360
    Xbox 360 HDDVD add on.

Do you see how it is much more expensive to buy a HDDVD add on? E.G. about 10 times more expensive? Even ignoring all the extra equipment, it's still $200.. I bet the wiimote is only like $50 or something. It is 4x more expensive, and it sold aroundabout 4x less.. that doesn't make the wiimote more popular really, does it?

    Furthermore:

-How many of the things did microsoft actually supply?
-The 360 HDDVD isn't essential to play multiplayer games on the 360. It's an add on for something external to gameplay.
-The 360 didn't just launch and doesn't have that hype.

This is why people getting jumped up about sales figures annoys me.. they don't mean anything!

I'd say sales of 40,000 are pretty high actually. How many films are available to buy on the format now-a-days? I'm betting it's still only a TINY amount.

This is my newer, bigger, reasonably sized signature. I hope it's not too big.

Which is actually true, since I don't think Tesco sell cows.

I think they might buy them though. & then kill them. & use pestisides. & make the food NOT ORGANIC. Which means it sucks.

& yeah, on topic, I agree with Fenno. Well, not completely, but partially.

HD-DVD, UMD & Blu-Ray are all doomed formats. There's no point for them to exist *runs away*

What I find interesting is that microsoft has taken more money with the HD-DVD unit than Sony took with its sixaxis.

Microsoft seems to have done extremely well in November, its wireless controllers which are not a new product and retail for a little more than the wii-mote is almost equalling it in sales.

Fact is that the Wii's accesories sales are a little over the 400,000 unit mark, Microsoft's is just under and the PS3's doesn't break 100,000. Sony might have a harder time than expected with the PS3.

I'm not surprised. The Wii remote is an absolutely stellar little device.

What I am surprised with, is that Microsoft's HD-DVD add-on for the 360 does NOT support HDMI input. It's just nuts for a company that's shoving HD down our throats as a selling point, to not include the truest high-def interface available. Bizarre.

Well guys, you read the article so the title worked Smilie

Raz always does a report on the US monthly hardware figures when he gets them, and the purpose of a title is to give you the gist of the topic. The two big new releases in the US accessories wise is the wii-mote and the HD-DVD unit. The gist of these figures is that the wii-mote outsold the HD-DVD unit, so thats the main focal of the figures and thats what the title tells you.

This isn't "breaking" news and wasn't meant to be, its a monthly (or as close as) news report of facts and figures from the games industry. Anyway, at least its more accurate than some headlines out there And this is a repected hardware site

Cheers Matt. Did I lie in the title? Did I imply the 360 HD-DVD was a flop? Nope, just stated a fact for the title.

Why not just discuss the actual sales like others rather than being so negative (something I've noticed more often in news replies lately)?

Ah well, each to their own...

It's not that the title lied at all, it's just that comparing the two pieces of hardware doesn't really have any value. Console sales-figures, yep, but comparing two peripherals so vastly different in form and function (and price) seems odd. These types of inessential news-esque items also whiff of Ninty back-scratching to the more cynical members.

Absolutely no beef with you though 'Raz, you do some really top drawer work. You're right about the creeping negativity. It's all too easy to get sucked in.

jesusraz did a good title. Because?
Well, look at the base 360 has in the US. It is wide, because ...no I do not say that, because than you flame me for hating MS and consumers alike.
Anyway, tha base is mich wider than the Million which bought Wii. Then a piece of hardware for the small base like Wii sells more than the hardware for wide 360? That's worth a news!

    On the other hand:
    * Wiimote costs $ 40 and HD-DVD costs 200 and no one knows if it's the future and no one cares about Next-Gen-DVDs which don't have any advantage over DVD that count.
    * Wiimote is a necessary device - namely a controller - for a console, that has multiplayer as a big market

So it's not entirely surprising. But I found it worth to read because I wanted to know it, I grinned, because I hate MS and I met Grumbler again. Hello Grumbler!
So thanks for the news, Adam!
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

why compare controller to HD-DVD add-on???

more interestingly, the Wii controller also outsold the Xbox 360 wireless controller!
