Nintendo News | Wii Remote Prototypes

By Jorge Ba-oh 19.12.2006 17

An interesting scan from Japanese magazine Nikkei Business reveals some Wii development prototypes showing some of the ideas behind the machine's remote device.

Before Nintendo unveiled the Wii remote and nunchuck, the world came up with various ideas on what the console's input device would look like - from a GameCube adaptation to a chunky controller with many screens, fans had it covered. The magazine reveals some interesting ideas Nintendo themselves had, from a laughable giant circular star to what nearly resembles the finished product in a sleek black shell.

Thanks to Nintendo Forum reader JAPTAR10101 and C3 reader Tim for the tip.

The frisbee looks like one of those "Leapster" or "V-Spot" video games meant to educate 4 year olds Smilie

The gray one is just bizzare. It looks like a stupid internet idea.

Hmm thanks to the expandability of the wiimote maybe we'll see somethings similar to these just more refined in the future?

Wow. Just glad they went with the remote style of controler. Any of those other designs, and I'd just be embarrassed to own the Wii. Good thing for good taste.

some pretty interesting designs there, the star one is quite strange though. the twisty one looks kinda like a psp

The grey one looks like a terrible design for a gamecube pad.

Thank you Mario. But our princess is in another cas- NO, NO, DON'T KILL ME! NOOOO! *Gurgling sound*

I think the grey one may have been meant to be held in different ways (like the N64 pad).

I have to say I agree.

Althought the two black remotes are fit.

Sarah.

Looks that way to me too, Dr R.

Let's just say I'm glad they went with what they actually released, which is actually one of the best controllers I've used. If that star one had come to fruition as a main controller I think I could safely say I wouldn't be playing Wii right now. Looks like a game show button or something, which gives me the idea that it might be used as a novelty buzzer for a quiz game or something down the line...

That star thing was probably not even the worst one they came up with. The Gamecube monstrosity is horrible too, but the star thing really takes the cake. Must be a joke controller.

I'm glad we're looking at these after Nintendo had decided. I think I might have exploded if I thought these were all Nintendo's revolution ideas. Smilie

Anticipation for the black Wii...rising...Smilie

I don't think they'd be allowed to go with the black one twisty one as I've seen microsoft PC controllers like that.
