Nintendo M.I.A Special | What Wii Want
Adam Riley & the Cubed3 Staff :: Thursday 21st December, 2006

With Nintendo's new-fangled Wii console now out across the world and being snapped up as quickly as the company can supply stock to retail, a few of us here at Cubed3 started thinking about what sort of games we would love to see appear on the console in the future. Rather like our previous M.I.A (Missing in Action) articles, we decided to pick on games that have not been seen on a Nintendo home format in the last generation. Read on to see what we thought and be sure to add your own ideas afterwards...

Adam Riley - Broken Sword: Angel of Death

The Broken Sword series is one that remains close to my heart to this very day, with three superb adventures following the exploits of George Stobbart and the lovely Nicole across treacherous locations in search of ancient artefacts and attempting to avoid perilous danger. The latest in the point-and-click series, Angel of Death has George starting off by meeting a new lady friend who takes him, begrudgingly at first, on another wild journey. Whilst the fourth BS is currently PC-only, it definitely would work wonders on the Nintendo Wii thanks to the unique control mechanic being akin to that of a PC's mouse movement and clicks.

Putting an example in your head, imagine yourself looking at a scene from early on in the game and twist it a little for how it could play on Wii. George and his client are desperately trying to escape a bunch of goons. But how are you to possibly block them off when some are right behind you, whilst others are circling the building to reach an elevator shaft? Time to take control of that Wii remote and get to work! Use the nunchuk to manoeuvre the camera into a better position, panning left and right slowly to get a feel of what is in the room, and then use Wii-mote to move your pointer over the sturdy golf club hiding in the corner and quickly click the trigger button to grab it. Then hastily rush through the back room door by literally point-and-clicking with the Wii-mote where you want to go, which appears to be into a dead-end. Do not panic, though!

Simply click on the door to shut it and place George by the side of the filing cabinet next to the door and watch as your context-sensitive cursor changes to a push icon. But pushing is no longer as simple as just clicking. Now the more you tilt the Wii controller, the harder George pushes and the more rumble is sent through the controller to mimic feedback. Then George needs to climb atop the cabinet to clamber through a whole in the ceiling that leads to a possible exit from the building. Therefore, the player then has to click on top of the cabinet and flick the controller in an upwards motion to activate the move, then doing the same to get through the hole. But what about the hapless woman? Once she has climbed onto the cabinet, the aim is to click on her and then tilt the controller upwards, as if literally pulling something in an arc toward your chest and then off you go to the next puzzle. The possibilities are endless!

John Boyle - Shenmue 3

Recently, in an ill-fated podcast, I stated my desire to see Nights into Dreams on the Wii and how it was logical that the next great evolution in control should have Nights to accompany it. After all, the analogue pad accompanied Nights launch so surely it should accompany the next great change in game control. Weaving in and out with the Wiimote does sound swish however my innermost desires shouted at me since and I've found myself dressing in leather and wondering how searching for sailors could be linked with motion sensors.

Yes, surely Shenmue 3 should set sail on the Nintendo Wii. It makes perfect sense, wandering around relaxed with the nunchuck attachment before hitting a toy capsule machine and getting to investigate the toy by imagining the Wiimote is the toy. Turn it over, shake it, and zoom in and out all just by moving your control. The detective element would be blown wide open as a result, clues could be hidden more effectively and more logical puzzles could be implemented as investigating objects is no longer restricted by camera angles and game mechanics. Just move the Wiimote, simple. And imagine the mini games! Darts with the Wiimote could devour live, QTE elements could have gestures along with button presses and even something as simple as petting the cat could be done with the Wiimote.

It'd also give the console a much-needed boost with a mature plot driven game showing that the Wii could combine innovation and plot driven gameplay. It'd also make legions of Sega fans Wii supporters for life and Videogaiden would give the console endless good press. Okay, granted. It'll cost loads and may not sell well but the Shenmue series is as close as gaming as got to art since the ship in R-Type twisted into view and the full majesty of space was illustrated in glorious 8 bit graphics. C'mon Sega, make the Internet happy...

Smilie Games we want to see on the Wii that have NOT been on a Nintendo platform...and certainly not ones by Nintendo - think you missed the point a bit, but thanks for the praise nonetheless Smilie

That's what we like! Good stuff, all of it.

Snatcher and policenauts remakes are also required.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I would love to see Square Enix make a decision to put Kingdom Hearts 3 on Wii. The game is apparently already in the planning stages, but a system is undetermined right now...Mushroom Kingdom Hearts would be amazing!

But adventure games are a big aspect missing from the Nintendo world. We're starting to see a few appear on the DS, but the Wii would be suited to the point-and-click style as well, with extra graphical oompf! Smilie

Good write-up guys!

I agree with jesusraz. Give us some RPG love. Any RPG could benifit from the Wii remote. Nintendo go kiss Squaresoft's bump. I want a real Final Fantasy with my Wii-mote.

After playing Red Steel I really, really want light gun shooters on Wii now, due to the shooting sections feeling more arcade shooter than FPS in parts.

But damn, Katamari on Wii? I would kill.

Nice article guys!

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

You did that on the wii?

AWESOME!!!!

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

I SO WANT A WII, WHY CAN'T TIMESLIPS BE REAL, THEN IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS!!! But seriouslly, guitar hero on the Wii...Smilie Omg I want it now, I wish it was really coming to Wii, I'd sell my kidney for it! Imagine being able to strum smoke on the water...wow...Infact I think we should all e-mail the makers of guitar hero now, NOW, GO, we need it! FTW! (For the Wii)

Enoch Powell was right, and you know it.

Didn't anyone like the way the Wii-mote could be used in something like Broken Sword? I thought that would work perfectly.

The other suggestions are all very cool as well - I'm really hoping the rumours about Katamari coming to Wii are true, for instance.

Is there any business reason why Okami couldn't be ported to and released on Wii? I only ask because if Capcom do not do this, I will have to pick up a cheap PS2 sometime in 2007.

Less posty, more gamey.

hmmmmmm something is missing!
i wish some ps2 or ps3 games come on the wii or ds

Vagrant Story on the VC would be sweet.
I think it would be implossible to do a sequel to Vagrant Story, but just to be able to replay the magic without getting out the little grey psx machine would be nice.
