Nintendo News | Babality for Mortal Kombat Wii?

By Jorge Ba-oh 05.01.2007 17

In a recent interview with Midway Chicago's Scot Bayless, next generation gaming was discussed with Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in mind. Is the company's classic fighting franchise too mature for Nintendo's sleek new home console?

Bayless spoke to Gamasultra on all sorts of Mortal Kombat tidbits, but with a mixed reception. The company, fortunately, don't release their content on all platforms known to man without first considering their audience, "But to be honest, I would be skeptical about putting an M-rated, unlicensed football game on certain platforms. That platform is aimed at an audience that isn't interested

For fuck sake just release the game, make some money and go home.

They could make some serious money with a propperly executed Mortal Kombat game on Wii.

But if they're just gonna fuck around with excuses like that, then they can go release it in HD on PS3 and see how many dont buy it because its the same game as the last 10.

I thought Mortal Kombat was for a younger audience? Seems to me that is the perfect demographic who enjoys that kind of game. I know I did.

So much for Wii being for everyone.

-Have you any idea what it's like to be a Fembot living in a Manbot's Manputer's world?
-What?

what a bunch of shortsighters!
Yeah, release one FPSTPS on X360, beat one another to sell more than all the 300 others who already did this too. Do 600 JRPGs on PS2 and try the same there. But do not release some good games on a console with

a) no rivals in the game you want to release
b) a heck of a lot of people from 14 to 60 buy. There is an audience for mature games, for crying out loud!

Why does Red Steel sells that good? Why is there Far Cry with 'M'-rating (at least in Germany), why is there a grown up title like Metroid? Because there are only kiddies?

Hell, Mortal Kombat on Gamecube sold not because it was too mature, but because it was crap as hell! There was an excellent Soul Calibur 2 on GC (It had no blood, but it was rated '16 and above' in Germany) and boy, did it sell! It was the best!

I fear they do not want to release MK because they think they can not stand up against Nintendo-quality like in Zelda, Metroid Prime and Co.

Another short sighted man from the software-business. That's why the biggest architecture with the greatest horsepower - the Gamecube - did fail in comparision to the other two in terms of mass of games. No Xbox1, no PS2 could live up to this gem. Like Dreamcast, it went down. Shall Wii turn out to be the same because some developer can not see how Wiimote controls a beat'em'up? Heck, no!

/edit:
-Bart-, it was the older audience, which played Soulcalibur 2 above Mortal Kombat - that's what I believe too. And it's clearly better imho.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Midway did nothing fantastic for the GameCube in Europe. It only released its "Arcade Classics" series on GC in the US, and with good reason too. People here just wouldn't have bought it. For most, the only reason to have a GC was for the Nintendo games. The Xbox and PS2 handled the mainstream shit that muddied the idea of multiplatform.

In my opinion, there aren't many companies that do multiplatform well. Hating to say it, but EA, THQ, Activision and Ubi are probably the best, and even then the GC got skimped versions of most of the games.

Which brings me onto Wii, and why the things Midway are saying are COMPLETELY REALISTIC.

As a company, of course they are going to want to make money, and whereas Ubi and Ninty have gone on to take risks, sometimes it just isn't financially smart to do that, and so some companies play it safe, like Red Octane for Guitar Hero, for example. They said that they didn't know if it would sell well and only chose the PS2 because of its massive userbase. Now, for GHIII, the 360 gets a look in. It isn't a surprise.

Midway haven't really been at the forefront of gaming recently, so kudos to them from a business standpoint to not put all (or any, really) of their resources towards Wii. It wouldn't be sane.

Three words. I. Rest. Case.

So, that puts you nowhere. A market, which is diverted already like PS2 and - only an example - shooter on X360 - do not earn money for years to come. That's why Ubisoft and Nintendo for example are going after another audience and market. They do not forget core gamers and that's fantastic. You only create great things when you make your own footsteps. See Tron, see Lord Of The Rings (Comeon, it was commercial, but it was also very good), see Lucasarts Adventures, see Star Wars (1977)... That's why I love Red Steel: A mature (only adults, 18 and above in Germany), well made, beautiful looking and atmospheric asian-based shooter (shooter: On X360 no one would have paid it any attention. It is the better because it is on Wii!). Sure, Nintendo may have pushed it, but they did a great Job. It may be too shabby for the shooter pros, but I love it.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

But it really is one thing to be really optimistic and another to be realistic. If there is one thing I have learned about Nintendo over the last 4 or 5 years of liking them, it is that you should never hold your breath. When did we get Wario Ware Twisted? Wait, we didn't.

Why? Legal issues? But still they gave us "updated" release dates. And again, it isn't out.

Nintendo are really good at making games, making money, and making a cult following (see Mario, Pok

What an eejit... does he think Resi Evil Chronicles is too kiddie too?
Mortal Kombat is an awful game anyway and has been for years. Nintendo fans certainly aren't missing out if Midway doesnt make Wii games...GC Kombat was Krap.

Isn't MK a game for 10-year-olds with shit taste?

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

No, its just a game for PS2 airheads. Which, incidentally, kinda fit the bill there. Smilie

All Mortal Kombat's are shite, since the excllent SNES versions but it still played second fiddle to the outstanding Street Fighter series.

CAPCOM make a new Street Fighter game NOW!!!!!

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clichť. They were the statement and the definition."

There is some truth in what they say. But it seems like an outdated excuse to not make a lazy Wii port. Which none of us would have bought anyways.

Pretty typical of Midway. Oh well I'm sure they die or be eaten by a larger compay in the next 8 years.

wow
*cough cough*

this game is going to rock!!!!
its worth the wait (i think)

I'm going to be super pissed if Midway delivers a watered down, half-assed MK for Wii simply because they think Wii's target demographic is the "kids & young teenagers" audience and are ignorant and out of touch with the demographic Wii is truly aimed at, everyone. That's the whole point of the freak'n console.

Nintendo needs to stay on top of devs like this, other wise it's going to come back and bite them (and us) in the ass.

Not only Midway, but many 3rd party devs need to pull their head out of their rectums and get educated to what Wii is all about. It's hard to believe that regardless of how many times Nintendo has reiterated Wii's potential, capabilities and target audience, they just can't seem to wrap their brains around it. It's starting to get angering. We had to deal with this problem with GameCube in spades, and I'm getting really tired of devs half assing the "Nintendo" version.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

It's starting to get really scary as to how much ignorance and short sightedness is spilling into game developers and publishers. It was bad enough when it was just gamers and game journalists basking in their own ignorance and stupidity.

Obviously, I don't mean everyone, though. lol Smilie

But they aren't all shite. You're just saying that because you're bitter about what this dude said. Shaolin Monks was quite mediocre, yes, but the others were all very fun. Not, like, AAA fun, but certainly not Far-Cry-Wii shite.
