Industry News | Sony: "Wii is an impulse buy"

By Jorge Ba-oh 31.01.2007 83

More industry banter comes with the Wii's increasing success in the market. Sony America spokesperson Dave Karakker has commented on he Wii's performance in comparison to the Playstation 3 in a recent interview with the New York Times.

According to Next-Gen.biz, Karakker noted that the Playstation 3 shouldn't be compared to Nintendo's Wii, as "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else."

Nintendo added their two cents on the allegations of console shortages due to low shipments as "absolutely inaccurate".

Stick with C3 for future industry updates..

Why are people dumbasses when drawing a conclusion from things they witness with their own eyes? If I would have to judge by your general opinion towards Nintendo on this very website I'd say you'd want to kick 'm in the nuts, basically...

I wouldn't go on a Nintendo website for no reason. I personally think Nintendo have fucked up a bit with the Wii. Its an impulse purchase in the way that if u saw one in stock somewhere, because they're so hard to come by u might just buy it. But then you think about it, it has one good game at the moment, and that's a gamecube game.

Never said you were here with 'no reason'...Smilie
If you think they fucked up with the Wii, that's your opinion, no biggie, but seriously, ever since the Wii was released you've sort of made a 'Nintendo=tehsuckzorx' impression here as if your life depended on it, so you can't really blame people for thinking you're actually 100% anti-Nintendo... And there are several good games for the Wii, not all released in Europe, and not all GREAT games, but still VERY enjoyable, if you actually open up a bit... Thinking a game WILL suck before you play it will ruin it for youSmilie

I have played it and found Wii sports fun. But it's like an arcade, it's fun for a while but the novelty soon wears off. I'd rather play Gears of War than some party games thanks.

All launch's are like that though the Wii has better titles at launch than the 360 did, the 360 only had Perfect Dark, which sux balls as Slydevil would say.

Does Excite Truck, Wario Ware, Mario Strikers, Battalion wars, Metroid Prime and Smash Bros. not appeal to you.

Metroid and Batallion wars, yeah. I just picked one of the three at random, they all illustrate the same point. Plus, i'm slightly anxious about Metroid becoming more "action oriented".

I hope Metroid stays similiar to the GameCube versions, don't might my odd bits of action, but there shouldn't be too much in Metroid Prime games.

It should be 10% action, and 90% puzzling and exploration...As it has always been.

I know you weren't talking to me but... no, those game are not appealing for quite a few people (me certainly). Excite Truck is just a novelty racing game, Wario Ware is just a novelty mini-game game, Mario Strikers is just a novelty football game, I never liked Metroid Prime at all (though accept that many do, so it's a personal-preference thing, the game is not bad in any way).

Smash Bros. is just a novelty beat-'em up with starring various mascots and stuff. Good for a laugh I'm sure, but I like my fighters to be serious and deep (Street Fighter III, Virtua Fighter 5, King Of Fighters Neowave, etc..). Smash Bros. is just a bit of a joke compared to them. All in all, these games, while good, are not games you'd buy a console for. Or I should say, not games I'd buy a console for, certainly. There are no 'musts' yet, just a load of novelty/joke games (to me).

The Wii starts with Mario Galaxy. Then, and only then.

It's a good thing you put down a lot of to me's, or I'd have jumped on you. Smilie

The biggest reason I will get a Wii is Super Smash Bros Brawl. Hardly a "novelty" IMO. The game possesses more depth than you'd think with hundreds of trophies to collect, and insane stat tracking among other things. Add an online mode and I am salivating. Plus, it nails without a doubt the most important factor for a game, it's fun.

Depth in a fighting game is not 'trophies and collectibles', it's in the gameplay. The fighting in Smash Bros is extremely simple, which makes it simple to pick-up-and-play, and great for party situations and stuff, but I like something I can sink my teeth into and really master. Virtua Fighter, for example; It's possible block your opponent's attack, parry it, and swiftly return the gesture with one of your own moves, all in one smooth motion.. if you're good enough (not in the same piss easy way as DOA, it requires lots of skill).

That's depth, not collectibles (though VF allows you to adorn your character with countless trinkets and crazy collectibles, personalizing it). I'm quite a fan of fighters, therefore, I find no great joy in Smash Bros. It's a good game, but it's nothing to me, and I do view it as just another novelty Nintendo party game.

Maybe stop looking at first party and give 3rd parties some attention - So you're not interested in Eledees, Trauma Centre, SSX Blur, Godfather, Tiger Woods, FF, Dragon Quest, RoTR, Sadness, Cooking Mama, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Fire Emblem, Forever Blue, No More Heroes, Line Rider, Orb, Pokemon, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, Sonic, none of these?

And that's just the ones we know about.

That's exactly what developers whine about - no one pays attention to their games, and everyone expects Nintendo titles to sell the console for them.

And Smash Bros has a lot more depth to it than that.

( Edited on 01.02.2007 03:21 by Amazingjanet )

If smash brothers was that simple then I wouldn't be able to completely pound people who think they're good with it.

Here here! Perhaps simple to play, but difficult to master. Smilie

I'm not saying it has no depth, but it pales compared to the fighters I play. Trust me, Smash Bros. feels shallow to me.

nah, the Wii is a gerat system, it has a couple of great games already, and many more are coming! I don't see it as a real criticism that people say the Wii is like an arcade game. Arcade games are some of the most profitable rip-offs because people find them so much fun they simply can't leave them alone. Its in our culture that people shell out way too much money to play with the basic props in arcades, same as they are for the Wii.

I've had a lot of fun on my couple of Wii games, but I haven't played them much just recently, sicne I've been gearing uip for school Smilie
