Industry News | Microsoft Loves the Wii Approach

By Jorge Ba-oh 26.02.2007 20

With the Wii's simplistic approach to games and Nintendo's repeated drive to restoring "fun" to the gaming world, Microsoft's Peter Moore has revealed his admiration for the Kyoto gaming giant.

CVG picked up Moore's comment in a recent edition of US magazine Game Informer. "From a first-party point of view, it's not just about E-rated games, it's going to be about the experience that, quite frankly, Nintendo has done a tremendous job in capturing, in bringing back fun - if you will - to the gaming platforms."

He wants Microsoft to learn from this, to try to use Nintendo's philosophies within their own projects, "we've got a few tricks up our sleeve as well to be able to do that. It's not something that we're going to be shy about, and it's not something that we're not painfully aware of that needs to be changed by this holiday. That has been the strategy all along, and we'll be making some more announcements in the coming month or two."

For the complete interview, be sure to head over to Game Informer.

ugh, this stuff makes me feel sick. It's such a blatant attempt to make Wii owners get 360's And you know what's the worst thing? It's working.

That's defiantly not a bad thing, there's alot of great games on the 360, I think that it's a good thing more Wii owners experience great games like Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Lost Planet, Dead Rising... I could go on.

I HERD U LIEK TEH MUDKIPZ?

Yeah I do want more people to experience the 360, but this is "suck up to your enemy" advertising at its worst. It's sickening.

I agree, I did wanna get a 360, but I figured it was probably BECAUSE of reasons like this, & peer pressure. I'm still considering of course, but I'd like to take my time.

Dunno what's worse though, Microsoft's *fake (if you wanna call it that)* praising, or Sony's dissing.

Phill Harrison: What do I think is worse? Well that's easy to answer..... uhm....... uuhm........ er...... um........ uuuuhm......... eer....... I withhold my comment.

Im waiting too see what Too Humans like.

A few 360 games interest me, but not many are exclusives.

Microsoft honestly does admire and respect Nintendo...why else have they offered to buy &or work with Nintendo or ore then one occasion ? :p

This remark strikes me as honest...but also a preportion for annouceing their own Wii-like controller.

Last update; Mice,Plumbers,Animatronics and Airbenders. We also have the socials; Facebook & G+.

i don't really care cus i got both 360 and a wii

They may as well embrance Ninendo's philosophy and admire it before copying it. At least they're admitting that they're copying them quite openly.

Peter Moore is originally from Liverpool so anything he says should be taken with great caution...*leaves*

This is in fact a risky strategy for MS and that should not be overlooked. Their demographics are vastly different to Nintendo. If they go too far to woo Nintendo's market, it may backfire. Their "oh I am much too cool to play kiddy Nintendo games" core demographic will find it difficult to cope.

So many of the xbox owners can't competently or cohesively articulate why they have it. They have been taken in by hype and rampant peer pressure (not all). The main reason it doesn't grab me is the plethora of FPS, sport and fighting games - nearly all not my preference. I have Halo and played it for about 30 minutes. I have Halo 2 and it is still sealed new (from 18 months ago). I actually have 40 xbox games, like new (or really new - except Fable, Jade Empire, Forza and a couple of Star Wars games).

It will be unsettling for this core demographic (fanboy) if Nintendo style games start showing up, as it would paint them into a corner - nervously trying to justify why it is still cool.

Temporarily banned until further notice.

On the other hand, this could work to lure Nintendo fans who adore Nintendo's accessable, not-trying-to-be-cool approach to Micro$oft. What makes you think that that won't happen?

(comes to senses)

Probably the fact that Nintendo have the most loyal fan following of the main parties. I'm not saying that is good, but you cannot argue that most of Nintendo's fans like it because it is Nintendo and not because of the content of the games. (Not all. Most.)

Screwing the rules since 1989.

I have both platforms also and like what both platforms are doing individually, i hate this lickiness from Peter Moore, he is a fool, he comes out with these lame quotes all the time and then gets blasted for them in the end, it's so visible what he is trying to do. LS

Oh, wow. Now they finally admit it: "We like Nintendo! And surely, we are that big, that we begin grab the market from Nintendo, also. Why? Because we have 10 Zentrillions-billions-zillions of bucks to rip every market apart, like we did with diverse PC-GUIs and like we did with gaming-consoles. X360 still does not pay itself of, but we have money enough to push 3 more successors in the market. So why not rip intendo apart! We have 3 good games, throw bucks at developers to make games, that are all the same and cool. We buy some superstars to play X360 and be present at events like some popstars and stuff and so we unite everything under our not-artful-roof. We already got the UK conquered.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

i dont like that bald twat!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Wii60 ftw!!! Joking...bit I am going Wii60 though and it's not because of him. The PS3 is just to expensive plus the box gets Halo.

Hence why Viva Pinata failed commercaly.

As a X-Box era fan, I totaly agree with you. That is why I am getting a Wii for my birthday. It has all the games I want.

Knightly, how is this working? If it was working, Wii sales would have slowed down a long fricken time ago. Sounds like you are some kid who has a negative stick up his but, at least yours is not sevear as that blue-devil icon guy.

Just get a 360 and be happy. Smilie

Ah, shush you miserable old fart. I think it's refreshing that industry figure heads can swallow their pride and praise the competition. He likes Nintendo, and he ain't afraid to say so. I like Peter Moore. I think the bloke's a fucking geezer.

Smilie I love how you know everything about Moore.

edit: And sidepocket, ever since the first time Moore did this, more and more Nintendo fans have been turning OMG WII60 LOL, so yes, I'd say it's working.

Sidepocket Wii sales haven't slowed down yet constantly selling out, it's the 360 that sales are slowing down.

On Topic, this isn't the first time Moore has been bumming Nintendo's approach, and it probably wouldn't be the last.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

Sidepocket said:
Sounds like you are some kid
Why do you call anyone who disagrees with you a kid? Are kids in your country more sensible than people at whatever age you are?

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

Peter Moore's comments last may 2006. "The gamers' response was muted at best," he said. "We remember it being applicable to flying games in particular and some driving games but overall there was somewhat of a collective yawn from the gaming community about the motion sensing technology.". This twat doesn't admire nintendo and he didn't believe in their strategy. But now that it's selling he wants to rip them off.
