Industry News | Jack Thompson Prevents UK Manhunt?

By Jorge Ba-oh 26.02.2007 50

Jack Thompson is at it again like horny teenagers. The Miami based attorney has been asked by individuals in the UK to try to prevent the distribution of Rockstar's upcoming Manhunt 2 in the country this summer.

According to TGN, Thompson was request after the recent announcement of the sequel in the works for later this year. Manhunt caused controversy with allegations of content in the game causing gullible youths to reenact scenes in reality.

With the original supposedly banned from many stores in the UK, a growing number of individuals seek the sequel to never make it to retail. Thompson has agreed to this request and will start to intervene shortly before the game's release.

Whether his campaign will be a success or not is certain, but expect some problems down the line from Rockstar's latest controvercial offering.

I'm 33, and dont need to be told what i can't see. its madness.

We only have one disadvantage as far as this debate goes... In America you can just moan about freedom of speech or something, and then you get whatever you want because otherwise they're taking away your rights. Unfortunately governmental organisations in this country aren't made up of complete idiots ;-;

*envious*

Is this guy still alive.. i thought he was dead.

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

He soon will be, if there is any justice on this planet.

Has he seen the Wii's parental controls? Has he seen boxes with age ratings on, to protect the minds of the innocent? Has he any clue what he is talking about?

No, no and... er... no. The man should at least research before he comes to a verdict. Ah, but I forget. He's a religious American. SmilieSmilieSmilie

Screwing the rules since 1989.

He tried to ban Pikmin 'cos it was offensive to midgets. I don't think it's COMPELTELY to do with the age rating. Smilie

These, uh,

individuals in the UK
- they wouldn't work for Rockstar, by any chance?
All publicity is good publicity (usually)

No, you're right. It's to do with being a publicity-hungry moron.

Ugh, I HATE British cencorship. Especially in Anime, Manga and games. Thankfully, the Manga tends to be pretty uncut through and through.

Yes, censorship does get on my nerves too. On one anime which I cannot remember, MVM films over here had to cut out a scene on request from the BBFC.

And we all know 4 Kids changed One Piece a lot for the dub, even though I don't even watch One Piece I know that!

BBFC seldom enforces censorship. There are only a few acts which the BBFC deems unsuitable for the public (corpophilia, necrophilia, beastiality and various other perversions). What the BBFC does do is sit with film and game producers are say "the inclusion of scene x,y or z means we have to give this product a rating of p,q or r. So, if you want a different rating, you'll have to amend that scene."

In the vast majority of cases age rating only affects product profitability by limiting the audience. This is why a lot of slasher films actually cut scenes in order to get 15 certificates, since the main audience for these films is actually under 18. When it comes to DVD releases, companies know that it's easier for under 18s to get to see 18 certificate DVDs than it is to go to the cinema to see 18 certificate films, so they put the scenes they voluntarily cut back into the film. This is quite different from what I understand is the situation in the USA, where having a high age rating can effectively kill a film's chances.

The only exception to this is 18R films (porn), where distribution is limited to licensed stores.

I really don't see what the problem is with this system.

British censorship: UK gets full uncut version of Soul Calibur on Dreamcast.

American censorship: US censors one of Voldo's costumes, as it is too 'sexually explicit'.

Okay children, it's time for a grown parent with teenage children to set you all straight (just kidding).

Australia is generally quite good with censorship ( not strong), but video games are on their own. Many games have been banned in Australi (not given a rating, making it illegal to sell) as the highest rating is MA.

The games that have all been banned have never interested me and generally crap titles (Fiddy cent). Censorship however, is worse than the games. How dare authority tell me that I can't play a game because they don't like it. It is undemocratic and immature. A bunch of old farts (older than me) banning a game for such lame reasons as - encouraging criminal acts, such as graffiti. Give me a break.

Western democracy is becoming more and more a Nanny state and it needs to stop. They are using collective punishment. As there are bad parents, we must all be punished for their failures. This is patent nonsense, deal with the idiots and leave the rest of us alone.

The most violent game I have is obviously GTA VC. The violence is so ridiculous, it is just funny (kick him in the groin and watch him cough up blood). War games are violent by nature. I rarely buy a violent game, but I have no right to tell others that they shouldn't. We need a return to personal responsibility and get governments out of our lives.

Temporarily banned until further notice.

Why is he bothered about Europe? He's an American!

Oh Dear God what rock has he crawled out from now. He needs to stay hiding.

The whole violence in video games creates serial killers really irritates me. I am surprised they don't blame video games for Jack the Ripper.

Anyway...Mr Thompson should hopefully fail with this rather sad campaign. If parents buy this game for their kids then that is there perogative it will clearly labelled 18, with a warning on it.

Tellyn: World Police. They have to butt in where they don't belong.

I must admit, when stuff is released on various medias in UK, it's generally fully uncut. A good example is the DragonBall mangas, while the US Viz publication seems to be the same cut stuff they put on Cartoon Network, the UK Gollancz Publication is fully uncut.

I hate 4Kids (though I miss their voice actors for Pok

If 4Kids had a physical manifestation, then yes, they'd be good target practice.

Good thing they never got their mitts on Naruto or Bleach Smilie
