Industry News | Sony: Rumble is so Last Generation

By Jorge Ba-oh 26.02.2007 28

Yet more industry commentary from the big boys in gaming, this time a slightly more amusing comment from Sony's Phil Harrison, once again bringing up the now age-old topic of the PS3's lack of rumble support; it's a last-generation feature, apparently.

In a featured interview with GameDaily, Harrision was questioned on why Sony's PlayStation 3 console lacks what many consider to be a fairly essential feature in input devices, rumble.

BIZ: A lot of gamers, including myself, enjoy the controller's motion sensing at times, but we still miss rumble. If gamers want it and are vocal enough, will Sony reintroduce the force feedback at some point?

PH: We have no plans to do so in the standard controller that ships with PlayStation 3. I believe that the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is. And we don't see the need to do that. Having said that, there will be specific game function controllers, potentially like steering wheels that do include vibration or feedback function

Phil Harrison is quite the amusing man, "thats SO last gen bitches!"

Can't motion sensing and rumble live side by side? Why not both?

I wish someone with even half a ball would interview this man.

I do think rumble is important; I wish my Wavebird still supported rumble. Smilie

Of course Sony will never admit rumble is important though...

Rumble is a last last generation feature that then became standard, Sony vastly improved on with the dual shock, and is now missing from the PS3. That's all.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Oh my god. How stupid can you get?

Rumble is one of the greatest revolutions in the gaming world, Sixaxis pails in comparison, there's no feel.

It's just pitiful excuses. Phill Harrison is a pitiful person.

Phil Harrison

Well they haven't even got motion sensitivity fully in their controller or at least it doesn't seem as though it was totally designed for that. Wii have it though don't Wii

I have yet to see anything remotely (ha) interesting done using the Six-Axis - it seems pretty inaccurate from what we've seen really.

Rumble can definately add an additional dimension to *some* games, so to say it is last-gen is frankly, not reflecting what consumers a) expect and b) what developers might want to deliver in terms of content and feedback in their games.

Sony haven't included it, I think, due to their lawsuit. But of course, Phil can't say that can he .. so has to spin his way out of it. I am really surprised he isn't working for our Government .. he'd be superb (in a sad way) .. Smilie

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those that understand binary and those that don't ..

PS3 can't have rumble
PS3 has a controller with not much movement sensing

Wii has good rumble
Wii has a controller with full motion sensing. Smilie

I don't get it, Wii has rumble and better tilt sensitivity and Sony can't match atleast one...

Yeah I read an interview with EGM. I really find him sickening Smilie

I think rumble is more important than ever now we have motion sensors, the combination of movement with a bit or rumble feedback really enhances some Wii games, it makes your motion feel connected with the action rather than detatched from it like you're just moving a controller.

Immersion...

Gods in His Heaven. Alls right in the World.

Admitting things is so last gen.

Either sony has got caught out my Immersion and cant admit it.

Or their engineers are too lame to be able to have a rubble and motion senseing at once.

Either way, its pitful.
Sony tries to tell us what we want.

"YOU DONT WANT RUMBLE...RUMBLE IS LAST GEN"

I half expected some sort of "Rumble isnt HD!" type comment ;p

oh, and yes, I agree too with rumble+motion senseing =ownz.

Even the subtle rumble when your wii pointer goes over buttons adds so much.

Lol rumble should be a pre requisite of any good controller, Sony make me laugh the shambles that was uncoverd at CES were the claimed to win an award for the sixaxis was total B, they had in fact one a award in conjuction with Nintendo for their controller development, but used it to say that their controller was better than the Wii Remote. LS

Probaly removed it to save some money. Rumble will always be an important feature, it can add so much feel and experince into a game.

Rumble was removed because of a problem with the law Sony had wasn't it? I'm sure they could fix it, they're just far too proud, they'd rather go and make ultra cheap excuses.

The Rumble feels natural in a games controller these days, on some games you don't even notice it, it just helps the gaming experience as a whole. If Sony want their games to be realistic, then losing rumble pack in favour of movement is pretty stupid, since not many realistic games other than racing games (which we already have those wheels for...P) use that kind of motion.

Has anyone else recognised the parallel between Phil Harrison and the old Iraqi Information Minister.

I wonder why Sony are so determind to screw themselves over?

the only last-gen leftovers i see are lying Phil and Fony in general. yep.

Rumble isn't, for me, too essential but it has really enhanced the feel in certain Wii games. For example in Wario Ware, rumble combined with sounds from the speaker adds some great effects to how you play a game.

This guy is an idiot... he the asme as Katarugi....

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562
