Industry News | Capcom goes Unreal with Square Enix and Activision

By Jorge Ba-oh 28.02.2007 7

In an increasing bid to spread the Unreal Engine 3 loving in various development studios, Capcom have announced an agreement to license the game-engine within future projects.

Epic Games's widely used engine brings powerful scripting and graphical capabilities to a studio, and in combination with a developer's own tools of the trade can open the potential for a completely versatile and interesting experience.

"The Unreal Engine is one of the most powerful and versatile tools available for next-generation game development. More than just a graphics engine, UE3 will empower the development team to create the quality experience that gamers expect from a Capcom product."
Mark Beaumont, executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe.

"Capcom is known for the quality and artistry of their games. We're glad that Unreal Engine 3 can be a part of their creative process."
Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games.

Capcom joins an increasing number of well known developers to utilise the capabilities of Unreal Engine. In January Square-Enix, announced their acquisition.

Activision is also working on an unannounced action game based on the Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games.
Image Touting the deal today, Laird Malamed, head of production for Activision said, "The Unreal Engine is one of the most technically advanced engines on the market and is a perfect fit for our upcoming action game. The engine's robust suite of programming tools will enable our development team to deliver what is sure to be an amazing game experience."

Certainly top news for the various studios involved, opening even more possibilities for top quality titles in the future.

Doubt the Wii will see any of these games though..

I knew SE was going Unreal ages ago.

Shame the Wii can't handle Unreal 3...

This is briliant news as far as i am concerned speaking as a die hard Capcom fan, owning various titles of theirs on various platforms, this is great but they may have bolted a little to soon and should have waited on Cry engine2 if it can be replicated on any of the consoles, but if i cannot, then this is indeed good. Why is this news for Nintendo fans. Capcom is using the unreal engine for Resident Evil 5. They have no plans of porting it to the Wii. Nor are they experimenting with or tweaking the Unreal 3 engine to work on the Wii.

Nintendo news only please.

I do not know if Wii can handle UE3. I fear not, but Cube brought us RE4 and it looked like UE2. So maybe they can use it for Wii, too. I fear I have to doubt that, thou... *sigh*
It makes sense for X360 and PS3, but unfortunately it may render ports for Wii impossible. I hope they find a way, since RE4 looked wonderful!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

thats good news for Capcom, but this doesnt relate to Nintey at all, coz we all know we wont see UE3 on the Wii!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562
