Nintendo News | No New Announcements at GDC?

By Slydevil 03.03.2007 20

Chris Kohler of Wired News, via his latest blog has revealed some highly disappointing news regarding Nintendo's presence at this years Game Developers Conference.

Though Nintendo's biggest players will attend; due to the pending major stock exchange, they will be unable to give any "forward-looking" information, that's including but not limited to details on Nintendo's latest home console, Wii.

According to the blog; Nintendo developers Shigeru Miyamoto, Eiji Aonuma, and Koji Kondo as well as executives, Reggie Fils-Aime and Perrin Kaplan have all been instructed not to reveal any news on upcoming projects and plans.

It is unknown whether this will effect Shigeru Miyamoto's keynote address, taking place 10:00AM Thursday.

Lets just hope they don't keep to their word this time around.

i doubt Shigsy will stand there for an hour speech and not reveale anything?!?!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I think this guy is speaking absolute balls, and has not a clue, this WILL be one of the most important keynotes Nintendo have ever made and will be so because some of the revelations made, time will tell. LSSmilie

I hope that this is not true - Nintendo need to reveal some major news in order to keep the interest of the fickle public.

Screwing the rules since 1989.

I want a release date for SSBB!

I want a release date for SSBB!

Ya, they really need to show something soon, GDC or not - new screens, video footage from upcoming games - something. To hold interest and get people talking about the Wii. Recently most discussion is centered on the lamo PS2 ports heaving to the console, and we need a few big first party titles to talk about,.

At least one of the killa apps needs to be shown*, im confident Nintendo are well aware of this, many are suggesting we may see a more aggressive approach from Nintendo at this years GDC, the fact that Phil the idiot speaks the day before will be used greatly to Nintendo's own advantage, they will be able to amend their level of disclosure depending on what was said the day before. LS

*Brain Training Wii, AC Wii, Metroid C, Nintendogs, SSBB, SMG, and anything else of Miyamotos creation including his new channel and the demo channel.

I doubt it, Kohler is very reliable as a video game journalist.

To be honest I always hated the way they announced things at GDC and I'd prefer it if they didn't. GDC keynotes are supposed to inspire ideas in developers, or sometimes rant at them for being shit and doing the same thing all the time. Whenever a game is unveiled it just makes the entire speech seem like an advertisement for that one game and it ruins it to be honest...

In any case GDC isn't made for announcing games, so it's not like they're obligated to.

Guys, this has to do with Nintendo's impending stock sale. If Nintendo Reps where to reveal their new products, this could inflate their stock prices and they would be sued by the Japanese Government. This is a law in Japan and the USA as well. Nintendo reps can only talk about existing products. That's the law.

So Miyamoto-san can talk about whatever he wants, he's not a rep.

Agreed. It pretty much makes the entire speech pointless as it makes the show just like ex-E3 and other similar shows, which isn't what it's about.

I believe they may elaborate on projects that are already known to the public, show more footage etc. But we won't hear about any new products or games. Only more about the ones that have already been confirmed.

All those things i mentioned above are certain eventualities.

It's true that GDC is meant to inspire first and foremost and Miyamoto will certainly do that like no other can, but things will be revealed in a way unseen previously by Nintendo, and the bulk of that will be done behind closed doors, which will be equally important as what Miyamoto will say on stage.

He will talk about what drives his creative vision in his work, not only within creating games but also his influence on creating new technologies, he played a major role in both the console aims of both the Wii and the DS so in talking about that he can then lead onto some of his own classic signature projects which are all killa aps and also some revlations into the channel he has ben making in conjunction with the young designers at EAD.

No outside sources truly know what this channel is, but i am taking a strong guess that it is something very fitting for it to go live worldwide during his speech at GDC...

"New Classics" is a phrase i have been hearing alot of lately, have Nintendo been working on new downloadable sized games to bolster the separate VC?, i for one hope so, if Miyamoto has been working on 8bit games to start off a new channel with original content then that would make me happy enough to take that and a few other details on the killa apps away from GDC this year.

In respect to the Demo channel, Wii games aside, i would be happy if some of these new classics were available to demo via your DS.

I am unsure about the memory capacity issues that the Wii onboard memory has so making Wii demo channel has a big question mark over it, unless they are expecting to utilize the 2 Gig SD capacity and whether they can make games bootable from the SD.

One thing is for sure, many people want such demos for upcoming Wii titles and the fact that other formats easily do this is of concern to Nintendo, so if it does not happen now, it will happen in the future, whether by way of SD or something else- via the two USB ports. LS

@ Monkey Wii

Anyone who works for Nintendo and speaks on their behalf is a representative, rep for short. Miyamoto-san is a rep and will not be speaking about any new Nintendo products. Sorry to crush your hopes.

Argh, I can't take it anymore, if there are no big announcements in the Nintendo world in the next few months, then I'm going to die of dehydration!! Smilie

I wish E3 hadn't been crapped up, now all we've got is GDS & TGS, & from the sounds of things, our much needed yearly gaming fix won't be until September. Smilie

If Nintendo have made something and then show this product whether in full form or not to the public, or behind closed doors there can be no suspicion that it does not exist and that they are ploying to boost stock lol, along with Miyamoto, Aonuma and Iwata will be behind the scenes doing what they have to just like Sony will be doing with their representatives. LS

I fail to see why the fact that a governmental organisation, which seems to have been forced to sell all the stocks it owns*, has sold it's stock, forces Nintendo to not announce anything... If anyone sells their take in Nintendo right now shouldn't it be their fault for being an idiot?

*sigh* No big E3 to look forward to in two months...

Miyamoto will talk about gaming theory, history and personal things (a bit like Iwata did last year), I can easily see him not needing to mention anything to do with 'forward looking' statements, so no problem for Nintendo there. I don't see why they would announce anything at the GDC, I don't think it would make too much sense.

It'd be far more sensible for them to bring out details LATER in the year (in a month or so) and then combine it with mainstream media advertising and coverage to really get things rolling.

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...
