Nintendo News | More Rare Titles for VC?

By Jorge Ba-oh 05.03.2007 16

With the original Donkey Kong Country making a fine appearance on the Wii's Virtual Console service, there had been interest for the sequels to follow. However, with Rare retaining the rights for their own characters, titles from the developer appearing on the system have been hazy.

However in the company's recent Q&A, the company were asked "if Rareware titles such as Banjo-Kazooie and others will appear on the Virtual Console. I would like to know if possible you could give me an answer..."

Rare responded with a positive answer: "This is where we finally edge into territory that could see Scribes neutron bombed from management level. The only Rare-developed title on Virtual Console right now is the original Donkey Kong Country, and unofficially there's a strong likelihood that its sequels will follow. But the Donkey Kong series of games is a Nintendo-owned franchise starring an established Nintendo character, whereas something like Banjo isn't (and even Diddy Kong Racing is less clear-cut), so it's nowhere near as easy to call. Especially when you also consider the existence of Xbox Live Arcade. So right now, the best answer we can offer (for either download service) is "it's possible". I like your sausage casserole mix, by the way."

I Rule.

Yay! Let's hope that Banjo Tooie appears - I never got round to play that...

I'd really appreciate BK on the VC considering it was an actual N64 game, and yeah, I know, XBLA, Microsoft, Licenses and whatnot, but who in their right minds would prevent people from having such a legend of a game?

Well Nitnendo and Microsoft would obviously. Neither want the other to have the games, so no-one gets them. It's a shame because RARE's games are basically the only decent ones on the N64, so if we don't get them the VC will pretty much stay pointless...

Man, just release them both Smilie Although I guess if PD got released on Live Arcade it'd be significantly better than the Wii's VC with potential for online play, revised frame rates etc.

DK is a Nintendo franchise, so why is RARE the only ones that can make the game??? This pisses me off, stupid Nintendo.

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

They're not. RARE didn't make Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Donkey Konga or Donkey Konga 2... We're talking about other RARE games

They made Jungle Beat didn't they? Because that's the studio making Mario Galaxy.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I'm almost certain they didn't... Can't really be bothered to go upstairs and check though >.>

Yeah it was EAD Tokyo's first game.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I hope Paon are working on the next big Donkey Kong adventure - EAD Tokyo created a great game in Jungle Beat, but it just wasn't Donkey Kong Country. Paon showed they knew what the series was all about with King of Swing - they're the only team outside of Rare that recognise Donkey Kong has his own world outside of Mario's.

As for Rare, the only games I'd really like to see on the Virtual Console are Diddy Kong Racing, DK64, and the DKC trilogy. Banjo-Kazooie would be nice, but I can't see it happening.

To be honest, I'd rather see Rare working on new, original stuff for the DS and Xbox 360 than wasting energy trying to get their old games up for download!Smilie

That wasn't very positive, it basically said "yes you can have the 4 donkey kong games"

Meh, I just want Diddy Kong Racing and I'll be a happy camper.

There's a possibility that might happen, of course with the exclusion of certain RAREWARE characters.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

Except it already exists on the DS...
