Industry News | Sony Confirms and Denies New PlayStation Portable

Update: SCE UK PR were contacted about the story by Joystiq and were told: "There are no immediate changes planned for PSP." So, someone is lying, right? Sounds like a bit of a PR mess to us. We'd be inclined to believe that the PSP will be getting some sort of face-lift. Just look at the PlayStation to the PSOne and the PlayStation 2 to the PSTwo. They both shrunk and got a sexy new look, so we'd expect the PSP to do the same sooner rather than later.

Original Story: Amidst rumours on the matter, finally a piece of fact has wormed its way to the surface from Sony HQ. Indeed it looks like a rival to the DS Lite is on the way! GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that Sony's UK managing director, Ray Maguire, has confirmed a redesigned PlayStation Portable is currently being worked on. According to Maguire a "smaller, lighter" version will launch in the future, similar to how the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were both re-designed later into their respective lifespans.

But Maguire was keen to note that the PSP's screen size will not be changing, making you wonder just how Sony can make it smaller. Currently the basic PSP pack costs

Not too surprising, rumors have been circling a lot lately. It will be interesting to see if this redesign will help the PSP compete against the DS lite. I just hope it doesn't spur Nintendo to redesigning the DS again...I just got a Lite a few months ago.

So who wants to bet this thing launches next to the God of War game that was just announced?

Wonder what they will change, as they claim, that already
* the design is frickin sexy
* screen will not change
* screen is frickin' sexy too and
* facking bright and smokin' crisp

They redesign it 'cause they want to make it cheaper to assemble and to maybe lower the price. What else could it be. They do not go after WAF (Women's acceptance factor), so they do not have to make it smoother and whiter and Nintendoggier.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

They'll probably just bump up the brightness, so Nintendo fans can't say the lite is brighter anymore. Smilie

Allegedly, it 'might' have a built in camera, 8GB of embedded flash memory, gorgeous screen, improved buttons, faster loading.

If those are true I guarantee you won't see a cheaper price. It needs the 8GB though.

redesigning the psp will not make it sell more. That is not what psp gamers are talking about. What they want are better games.

Does anyone think that the DS Lite would have been a hit with out the games. It would have increased sales momentarily but the sale would not last. Games are what keep people coming back.

I agree, what it needs is a large collection of good games, unless they can come in with some top new titles before the launch of this re-designed model it will be unsuccessfull as they hope it to be, and will be a case of style over substance. LS

And a better battery life. Then... it will still be owned, sales-wise, by the DS.

huh didnt expect this coming... new re-designed PSP... Smilie what can they do!?!? maybe try and make it abit more faster coz the loading kills...

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!

The biggest problem with the PSP is the UMD disk format.

I dont see how they can "fix" that in a redesign.

All they can really do is make the battery life better, include some memory and maybe make it a wee bit slimmer (not that the PSP is especially thick, but there's no other way they can make it smaller if the screen stays the same...unless its a shell design?).

I just completed pokemon yellow! 151 pokemon seen and caught.
Surely that's worth a star?

Nicht. I think the PSP is a right smart piece of kit. An even smarter version would be way cool.

Sony can never make the psp small without reducing the screen size... the screen takes up the whole thing, It won't happen.

How are they supposed to change the PSP...

Cubed3 Member

A longer battery life and internal memory would be some great additions.
Sony always had great redesigns for their consoles, wonder what the new PSP will look like.

I can't imagine them making it any smaller at all, so I guess a bit lighter is the only way to go... It won't help it though

I'd like to say that I would never buy a new piece of machinery for purely cosmetic purposes. Then I see my DS Lite...
