    UK Chart Highlights XCX
...Sony's PlayStation 3 Breaks New Records

Your weekly UK Chart Round-Up brought to you by stat-man jesusraz. Remember, the images here do not reflect actual sales!

    A true record breaker?

Despite failing to break records over in Australia, as reported in the original article included at the very bottom, it seems that the UK market has been far more responsive to Sony's marketing techniques and the lure of the self-proclaimed 'true next generation system'. But did it totally obliterate the competition and can it really claim to be the record breaker that Sony is already making it out to be? That is what we are here to look at...

Sony Blitzes the UK Top 40!

With initial reports seemingly pointing to a slow start for the PlayStation 3, it has quickly become apparent that the large amount of stock available paid off. However, there are two sides to this coin. First of all Sony now has the fastest selling home console ever, with 165,000 units sold over the first two days (the Wii sold 105,000 when launched on 8th December, 2006). Yet this fails to even beat the PSP, which managed 185,000 back in September 2005. Just to confuse matters, though, this coin turns out to have a third side (...) as the PS3 is the highest priced system ever! Anyway, Chart Track reports nearly three times as many pieces of software were sold than when the PS2 launched and the attach rate is similar

Doesnt bode well for a company when they have to give TV's away to make sure that people are coming to the midnight launch events and to buy the system.

What better way of getting some viral marketing than by giving away 42" Bravias to showcase the PS3's graphics?

Then again, it also highlights the drawback of PS3: you need a massive and expensive HDTV to really experience the benefit.

And no I'm not buying PS3 (or 360). Just not interested in owning those machines.

I walked into HMV the other day and foolishly paused at the games section for 3 seconds. I was instantly accosted by a loitering boy with a clipboard asking if I was interested in reserving a PS3. A Borat cut-out plastered with promo-leaflets and hastily-printed Word.docs stood in the corner demanding I "Pre-order PlayStation3 gamesplay console!"

    It made me sad.

    Less posty, more gamey.

I was in GAME today and they'd only sold about 10 consoles when I asked this morning... pretty piss poor considering they still don't stock Wii consoles because of demand.

The tv thing was a marketing device, not an attempt to shift the launch units- they didn't publicise it in advance. Pretty neat, but it just makes me wish I'd bought one then, rather than going out and getting one now Smilie

I think there were free games as well as free taxis home (so as not to gain negative press for muggings no doubt) and one lucky person got EVERYTHING for free.

But honestly how can anyone look at this negatively? Yes it may be a shameless marketing drive but what has Nintendo done for you with regards to the Wii on launch date or Microsoft with the Xbox360? Well other than pissing people off for lack of stock?

Regardless of the intentions behind this its is THE BEST customer orientated console launch. What has Nintendo done to reward you for your loyalty to the brand?

Anyway, those "humorous" examples are available to any person who buys the Wii and not just fans like ourselves.

Pathetic little fact: Today EVERY commercial channel that had a news broadcast broadcasted the exact same thing about the PS3's launch: "PS3 is already a succes, though there is a surprising amount of competition, and amazingly enough the cheaper Nintendo Wii is very popular." (Some of the 'evil intent' was lost in translation)

    Smilie

4/5 different channels the exact same message. Coincidence? I think not. Sony paying news broadcasts to broadcast this? Fuck, yeah!

Maybe. Although I think it would be more likely repeating what's said in press releases they've probably been given along with what execs, PR etc. keep telling people. More like lazy reporting because no one in the news gives a shit about gaming.

As in, still in stores to buy. Without pre orders.

That's mental isn't it? What was the stock like?
