By Adam Riley 03.04.2007 21

We have been totally bombarded by NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams news on the Wii from Sega and now the company has confirmed the game is not coming in 2008 as previously thought, but in time for Christmas in Europe!

SEGA Europe and SEGA of America today announced NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, the long awaited sequel to the critically-acclaimed NiGHTS franchise that gave gamers the freedom to fly in a world of dreams and imagination. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is being developed by SEGA Studios USA for Wii and is scheduled to be released winter 2007.

"NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams takes full advantage of the innovative Wii Remote by letting gamers fly through breathtaking dream worlds. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams brings an exciting and unique gameplay experience to one of SEGA's most cherished franchises and is sure to attract a new generation of fans."
- Gary Knight, Director of Marketing, Sega Europe.

As a fantasy jester called NiGHTS, players will fly through Nightopia, a rich and vibrant world where dreams come to life. Gamers must find new and inventive ways for NiGHTS to use his amazing acrobatic skills, freedom of flight, and other special abilities in a bid to protect Nightopia from being consumed by the creatures of nightmare, the Nightmarens.

With the innovative Wii Remote, gamers will experience a heightened sense of gliding, spiralling and looping through the air around seven mystical dream worlds packed with high-flying adventure. NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is an adventure that the whole family will enjoy, filled with courage, hope and inspiration.

As a side point, Sega has also re-confirmed Alien Syndrome (Wii) is due for Summer, 2007, plus The Golden Compass (Wii/DS) and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii/DS) are coming in time for Christmas as well.

That's the one thing we do know - that it will be horribly rushed that is. The question is whether there'll be any bits of magic in there to make it worthwhile.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Woo!

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is being developed by SEGA Studios USA for Wii and is scheduled to be released winter 2007.

Does this mean it's not being produced by Sonic Team? Maybe it could be a super special awesome collab like Shenmue was.

If Sonic Team wasn't working on Shenmue with the rest of SEGA, it'd probably be the best game in the universe, Sonic Team took a good 5-10% off of the review scores. Smilie

how long has this game been in development

Glad to hear this game is for 2007. Although I hope it doesnt get overshadowed by the likes of GTAIV, Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero 3, Rock Band, MGS4, etc.

Don't hate, congratulate!

About 2 days

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

It's being made by the US branch Sonic Team (who made Shadow, SA2, which isn't to say the Jap branch is any better, they just made the shit next gen Sonic), but the guy in charge of the project was the lead game designer on the original NiGHTS. They're probably lettign him make it to kepp him from commiting suicide, but it's likely on a very strict budget and time scale, because that's how Sonic Team works these days anyhow, even when they're not working on a game that is unlikely to sell very well like this one.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It's kinda sad... Makes you wonder if their games would actually be decent if they weren't attached to monitors with a headbrace while they worked...

Oh come on, they weren't that bad around that time. In fact, I still wouldn't say they're responsible for that many abominations of games - Sonic 360, Shadow, Billy Hatcher (love it/hate it - I'm firmly in the latter category)...most of their other stuff has been pretty sound as far as I can recall, aside the obvious decline in the quality of Sonic titles. They might've been responsible for the above atrocities, but people need to get off their backs a bit and recognise they've made decent stuff of late as well, such as Sonic and the Secret Rings and the Project Rub series on DS.

We can think this is rushed, but remember it has been rumoured since last year. It could've been in development for at least 12 months by this point, as we only knew about Sonic a year after its development began. With the lead designer at the helm, I'm still going to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they can make it decent despite the relatively short time until release. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Those were by another arrangement of Sonic Team entirely (with a lot of ex-UGA staff). I doubt there's much of a connection really, the Sonic Team brand encompasses quite a loose bunch of people.

At best I think this game will be of the quality of Secret Rings. As I understand it and from what I've seen, Secret Rings has some kind of basic gameplay about sussed, and some alright graphics, but is still shit stained.

The reassuring thing is that the visual stuff we've seen is spot-on 100% NiGHTS, which no recent Sonic game has even sniffed. Sonic Team don't get Sonic at all any more, but by the looks of it they do get NiGHTS.

The most important thing that we need to know now, is whether it's still on a 2D plane like the original or like that eyetoy thing. And of course whether the controls are shite.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

The team behind Shadow the Hedgehog is making this........*awaits the misery of SEGA buff's everywhere when it turns out to be mediocre at best.*

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

The thing is, it's the Sonic Team of late that's been the downfall, I bet it was actually pretty good back in the DreamCast/glory days, but now it's sunk to a low of gaming, & can't seem to get it right.

Sonic & The Secret Rings or Sonic Rush are actually really good, but I don't think Sonic Team made them totally... I think it were some other people.

Can't wait for this.

Sonic Rush had absolutely nothing to do with Sonic Team as far as I know... Except maybe the making up of the new character. They love doing that

I'm reserving judgement for now...

Screwing the rules since 1989.

Not sure if this is good news, they've only just announced it. This would be in line with that really bleak article Grumbles linked to, which said that no major resources are being devoted to the game, that the development schedule is really tight, and that they're just going to cane it out as quickly as possible.

Hmmm, we'll see.

Smilie You've had a romour, and a confirmation. Not exactly 'bombarded' Smilie

Here is what I am confused about, how long has it been in development.

There is a diffrence between annouced and development time. They could have been developing for months or years already but only annouced the game recently.

Apparently it started development in October, according to a link Grumbs posted. I think so anyway...

Dude yuor totally awesome. And i won't be killing you anytime soon.

Yeah about october probably, but they're bound to be developing other things as well and being shunted around to help other bits of Sega. Sonic team is a very loose umbrella.

huh Smilie Christmas 2007.... WTF this sounds extremely rushed!! i hope they dont make it shit!!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562
