…Nintendo Wii Barges Past PlayStation 3 (Again)

Your weekly UK Chart Round-Up brought to you by stat-man jesusraz. Remember, the images here do not reflect actual sales!

No leaks this week…really?

After last week’s leaked numbers that showed how bad the PlayStation 3 was doing in comparison to Nintendo’s Wii, and the Xbox 360 doing even worse, this week it was assumed there would be a heavy lock-down to prevent further information being released. But a timely error has led to sales of the top-selling PS3 game being revealed and thus allowing us to extrapolate and come to the conclusion that nothing much has changed this week…with the exception of the PS3 actually sliding further. What can be told, though, is that Howard Stringer, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Sony, announced at the world premiere of Spider-man 3 in Japan that the PS3 has sold 800,000 units across the whole of Europe! But, moving on, how do the games line up this week? Let us find out…

PS3 struggling, Wii buoyant

The hardware sales leak last week may have caused controversy last week, but there has been another slip this week it would seem, this time in terms of software sales. In Chart Track’s description, it mentions that the No.12 game, MotorStorm on PS3 – a non-mover and the PS3’s No.1 game, sold 6,899 copies and considering it has been reported by many as basically selling alongside the hardware, it can be assumed that hardware sales are probably around the 10,000 mark, thus falling again from last week’s 17,000. In the All Format Top 40 (where Brain Training rebounds back up five to No.9), though, MotorStorm has fallen to No.22 due to all the budget games that feature there. This is one spot lower than Wii Play, which has jumped from No.36 to No.21 and considering that also tends to sell in tandem with the Wii, yet many consoles just sell alone with the sports package, it is safe to presume Wii once again out-sold PS3 in the UK…Still with me? Doubtful, but here's the bottom line:

1.) Wii Play sold more than MotorStorm;
2.) Most PS3s are selling with MotorStorm;
3.) Wii sells on its own as well as alongside Wii Play;
4.) PS3 probably sold around 10,000 units;
5.) Wii will have sold more than PS3.

Hopefully the idea behind that logic is a little clearer...

Anyway, back to the chart listings, where TMNT has ousted Command & Conquer from No.1, leaving it at No.4 now. Pok?n Ranger storms in at No.2, proving far stronger than last year’s Mystery Dungeon, with Tiger Woods 07 forcing its way up five to No.3. UEFA Champions League holds on, climbing one to No.6, whilst Guitar Hero II dips two to No.7 (No.1 on 360) and Virtua Tennis drops two to No.8 despite being on four platforms now. Medal of Honour falls five to No.9 as the PS2 game is pushed back by TMNT on its system-specific chart and the Wii version is practically ignored, whilst The Sims 2: Pets re-enters the Top 10 at No.10.

New Super Mario Bros. drags itself back up three to No.13, Crackdown on 360 is up a place to No.14, whilst Resistance on PS3 is down five to No.15 and Gears of Wars is back up six to No.19. Zelda Twilight Princess moves up five to No.23, Spectrobes on DS is down four to No.25 and Sonic Wii slides from No.14 to No.26, along with Rayman dropping four to No.27. Atari will be rubbing its hands as Tamagotchi Connexion Corner Shop 2 proves far stronger than its predecessor, reaching No.28, up six this week. Animal Crossing sticks at No.31, nintendogs: Lab & Friends is up three to No.34 and there is a new entry for Harvest Moon DS at No.35, the first time the series has cracked the Top 40 since A Wonderful Life on GameCube. Dalmatian & Friends returns at No.36, Mario Kart DS is back at No.37, Final Fantasy XII falls a further eight to No.38 and WarioWare: Smooth Moves is up a place to No.39.

Due to the ups and downs of the amount of stock Nintendo can supply for Wii over here, the Top 20 for it is certainly quite erratic. This week Wii Play and Zelda both move up a place to take No.1 and No.2, respectively, whilst Sonic is pushed back down to No.3 ahead of non-movers Tiger Woods (No.4) and WarioWare (No.5). Super Monkey Ball and Red Steel show good longevity with Sega’s simian fest up two to No.6 and Ubisoft’s game jumping three to No.7, with Excite Truck also moving back up three to No.8. The biggest mover is Prince of Persia, which seems to have a lot of retail presence at the moment, helping it up from No.16 to No.9! Heatseeker drops back five to No.11, Rayman is down again, falling six to No.13, The Godfather climbs one to No.16, SSX Blur slides three to No.17 and Blazing Angels holds on at No.19. Looks like new release Wing Island simply could not make the cut!

In the week before Final Fantasy V hits, Dogz jumps two on the GBA Top 20 to claim No.1, with Catz up six to No.2, pushing Flushed Away down to No.3. Rayman Raving Rabbids continues its ascent, leaping from No.13 to No.5, Pok?n Mystery Dungeon drops one to No.6 and Cars is down five to No.7, ahead of Pok?n Emerald, which moves up seven to No.10, clearly spurred on by Ranger’s release on DS. Rounding things off is Dogz Fashion, returning at No.20. Zelda and Pok?n keep the top spots on the GC Top 10, Fire Emblem moves up three to No.5, Mario Smash Football shuffles up two to No.7 and Naruto 2 is back at No.9. On the budget side, FIFA 07 reclaims No.1 from Metal Gear Solid, The Sims 2: Pets is up two to No.3, with Monkey Ball Adventure still going strong, up two to No.4, and Wind Waker flies high once more, up six to No.6. Metroid Prime 2 shifts up five to No.8 and Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life re-enters at No.10, boosted by the DS game’s release, no doubt. As usual, Resident Evil games litter the chart – Zero is up seven to No.13, Remake returns at No.14, RE2 drops ten to No.17 and Code: Veronica slips one to No.20.

There are several changes in this week’s DS Top 20, with Pok?n Ranger hitting at No.1, pushing Brain Training, Mario and Spectrobes all down one place each. Tamagotchi 2 holds at No.5, Big Brain Academy is up two to No.6 and there are two surprising re-entries: 42 All-Time Classics back in at No.8 and Cooking Mama (which actually makes its Top 20 d?t) at No.10. Harvest Moon enters at No.13 in its first week, Mario Kart DS slips three to No.15, Super Monkey Ball is up two to No.16 and there is a re-entry at No.17 for Pippa Funnell. And here is the sad news: Hotel Dusk only enters at No.18 despite Nintendo’s best efforts to promote the game heavily (TV, online, etc!). With any luck the good word-of-mouth it is also receiving will see it jump next week like many DS games do. Wrapping things up, it is sad to see Theme Park tumble from No.11 to No.19 so quickly…but it is not that easy to find at the moment.

No offense fellas but are you's 5 or something, how hard can it be to understand that, Raz does a great job summarises the shit load of charts up.

There are 3 different Top 40 Charts;
All Price (ie all games)
Full Price (games at full RRP, ie Brain Training isn't on it)
Budget Price (made up of budget games eg ; BT, Sonic Rush, GTA Liberty City Stories)

As well as going through the the DS, GBA & Wii top 20's, as well as the GameCube top 10.

Anyways good week for Nintendo, but i hoped Hotel Dusk would of faired a bit better.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich?They were the statement and the definition."

The bit about the hardware estimates had my head in a whirl this morning! Hopefully the five-point breakdown clarifies things a little more.

Anyway, shame Hotel Dusk is so low and Phoenix Wright has dropped off the Top 20...but it's great to see the Wii software doing so well, with five games making the various Top 40s in total.

So you think the Wii didn't out-sell the PS3 this week then? Smilie

...how could that not make sense... it made perfect sense,

however all he did was analyse what was going on. Wii Play saw a massive stock replenishment this week. So it has to be said that people could have bought Wii Play without the Wii console (namely because they already had a Wii) I also can't see that many Wii's selling in one week simply because they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Again with Motorstorm, word of mouth could have spread to the people who dont have that game but have a PS3 and decide to buy it.

However Raz is probably right, the Wii most likely outsold the PS3 marginally.

Also price cuts to the PS3 may be an indication as to how poor the PS3 is doing, i found a PS3 in Virgin Megastore for £380. (student discount) however a lot of places have dropped the price down to £399. Simple supply and demand says that Sony have a lot of Supply and not a lot of demand.
