After having left EA behind, a group of veteran developers formerly of the EA Canada arm have formed their own group called 'Jet Black Studios' and are to focus on Nintendo's Wii and DS. The fully independent team will not just be bringing licensed games to the table, but plenty of new content as well.

"With the launch of our new studio we've brought together all the key elements to develop top games. Both the Nintendo DS and the Wii's Wi-Fi capabilities provide an advanced medium for Jet Black to bring already popular franchises to an even broader worldwide audience."
    - Co-founder and CEO Roger Freddi.

Jet Black is not working alone, though, as it has struck up a close business relationship with Flashman Studios, a business management firm that has been involved with the likes of Disney's Pixar projects, as well as Ignition, Warner Brothers and Sony Online Entertainment.

"We are confident in the capabilities of Jet Black's exceptional team, and know our strong global alliances and years of game experience will help grow its business. Our proven success in cultivating the right match of intellectual property, publisher and developer will allow Jet Black to do what they do best

Many new companies do some dirty work (aka 'license games' or barbie-horseriding-games) to built up money and company basics and make some unique and expensive games. But fortunately on Wii and DS can be developed quite cheap. Maybe good platform, for other startups too.
And they surely are no absolute beginners...
Hope we see some serious content from these people soon.
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I was expecting this to be along the lines of: hooray experienced developers break away from nightmare EA franchise hell to make original material for a change!

    Then I read this:
Both the Nintendo DS and the Wii's Wi-Fi capabilities provide an advanced medium for Jet Black to bring already popular franchises to an even broader worldwide audience.

Yeah, they're still boring bellends even when independent.
It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Is a game only good if it isn't popular, Grumbler?

Hey! My brother was a programmer on the original Barbie horse-riding game (the one that came out in the late 90's). For it's time, the original one was actually pretty cool (code and technology wise), and very popular (well, you know, if you were a tween girl Smilie. He's the lead programmer on Tabula Rasa now, so I guess his "dirty work" paid off Smilie

Yeah, Wii is cheap to work on (compared to 360 and PS3 and PC), and the DS is even cheaper. The fact that they're also popular is definitely drawing in a lot of new developers, and developers that avoided the GameCube (which wasn't any cheaper to work on than the PS2 or XBox).
