Nintendo Wii News | Near Perfect Score From Famitsu for Resident Evil 4 on Wii

By James Temperton 22.05.2007 30

We want it even more now. The editors of Famitsu DS+Wii have been spending a whole lot of time with Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition and to be quite frank, we're rather jealous. Weekly Famitsu has offered up its opinions and ratings in the latest issue of the magazine that just hit news stands.

The scores are hugely impressive. Two editors gave the game a perfect 10 out of 10 with the other two giving it a 9 out of 10. For the record, that is stupidly high scoring, in case you hadn't already guessed.

They noted that whilst the content was very much the same as the GameCube version, the Wii-mote based fun offered by the controls really add something to the title. One said that the game brings you even closer to the action and the tension of the title.

They also agreed that the new controls are simple and easy to use and get into and that it is still enjoyable if you have played the original.

The game is out on the the 31st of May in Japan, June 19th in the USA and finally in Europe on the 31st of August. We'll have a review for you soon.

Thanks to IGN for the details and C3 member Co Chief Resident John Dorian for the news tip.

These are the same people that gave that Steets of NY game a high score, keep that in mind.

A por tis a port, I'm not getting fooled this easily.

Believe...believe...

Well I did sell my Cube copy...so I'll be getting this. But I know that it isn't selling for a budget price in NZ like it is in the US.

Definitive Version.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

You've caused some arguments with your 31st August European release date.

Where did you get your info? Everyone else says 29th June.

Its the 29th June, for Europe, IGN have got the wrong release date on their site, check out the NoE site.

Yep, just checked IGN, and they've put it down as 31st August. I'm cheering up a bit now! Bring it on!

I have never played it, but at a budget price, I am very likely to get it. As it is for NZ, it probably will be full price in Australia ($100). I will wait for a reduction to $50 before I am tempted, or I will import an NTSC version much cheaper.

Temporarily banned until further notice.

Any which way, get this game, get it in english text though.

Definitive Version ^.^ cannot wait- 29th JUNE 2007 UK. LS

This is perfect birthday gift for me I'm getting this for sure. A twelve day late present Isn't bad especially RE4 since I didn't play ps2 version.

Never owned Resi4 so looks like this is a good version to buy.

Awsome news, i was gonna get this game anyway just for the extra content!! Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Then there is no point in any reviews or scores by anybody.

Anyway. This port sounds interesting. I'll keep a look out.

Meh. I don't particularly hold their reviews in high-esteem. They give every RPG game 40/40. Nobheads.

I used to respect them until they gave Sonic 360 20 or 30 something out of 40... I mean come on. They're usually quite trustworthy though.

There are simple rules when reading game reviews:

1) if the game has been hyped up, is being heavily supported by the manufacturers of a console as is from an existing popular franchise it will score well regardless of the quality of the game. With Famitsu scores you need to rack that up a bit more as they're very sensitive to protest from dedicated fans of particular franchises. Games that have fallen, or will fall, into that category include God of War II, Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid 4, Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, etc, etc, etc

2) On most occasions, these games will be very good anyway. They just won't be worthy of the "best game ever" hyperbole spewing from every journo's mouth. Chances are you'll be able to play it and say to yourself "level/item/dungeon/area/mission/boss x could've been much better". Chances are the only reason you'll feel let down by the game is because of the ridiculous hype generated by the journos.

3) Journos will pay constant lip service to "gaming innovation", "new genres" and "intelligent gameplay" but will rarely give games displaying these more than 80%, marking them down for things like audio, difficulty and length; to which a million developers will respond "what I've got to be innovative and make every other aspect of the game top notch on the tiny budget I've been given because my idea is risky". Want proof? Look at DS game scores compared to PSP.

4) Games journos will only give high scores to "gamers' games". Want proof? Look at DS game scores compared to PSP.

5) A pretty game that plays like shite, within an established genre, will be given a better score than an ugly game with above average gameplay.

Except for with Sonic 360 Smilie Hyped up for over a year as the game that would redefine Sonic, had visuals that made Sonic fanboys wet themselves, & ended up with reviews of 40%.

If you want a gory, violent, action game the game is 9 or 10 out of 10.

If you want an atmospheric puzzle game with detailed graphics then you will prefer Resident Evil remake.

Personally, I prefer the remake.

I don't think it's right that so many reviews have overlooked the fact that some far more complex puzzles could have been put in this game.

I seem to remember most of the reviews praising the puzzles for not being as 'illogical' as in previous games. I've put that in inverted commas as I've not played the original (just purchased, only played for about 10 minutes). It could very well be the case that the reviewers are simply morons. It usually is.

Seriously, for a hobby that's meant to be geeky, games are bloomin' stupid on most occasions.

Who the fuck keeps on saying that Famitsu is so hard to please? They give out > 9s at every Japanese type game they see. Present them with a FPS and they will almost certainly give it a crap score. They are horrible.

People probably say they're hard to please because 9/10 games these days ARE shooters. Smilie

But I bet 8/10 of them don't even make it to Japan.

It's because Japanese people in general hate FPSs, and quite rightly so, most of them are really shit. Giving all the Final Fantasy games full marks does make them look really insane though...

What a lot of people don't realise is that just as there a lot of westerners that are into Japanese games, there are a lot of Japanese people into western games. The japanese hate FPS as much as westerners hate JRPGs.

The problem is that not many get published over there, it's just like the situation with Japanese stuff getting published over here, but quite a lot worse.

It's not an FPS, but a good example is Oblivion. There was a petition to get it translated into Japanese, which was so overwhelming that 2K decided to do it. Just think how pathetic most game related petitions by UK and US gamers combined are. It must have been pretty big.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

For example, San Andreas finally came out in Japan this year!

This year!
