Nintendo News | Reggie: Third Parties Strong on Wii, Overtaking Xbox 360 in 2007 & More

Reggie Fils-Aime was recently quizzed on the performance of Nintendo's Wii, how it compares to other formats and the state of Third Parties, and as usual provided very frank answers. Below are some choice quotes:

Q: You said independent, third-party publishers have collectively sold more games for Wii than Nintendo. Have any of these companies topped a million units sold with any of their individual titles?
Reggie Fils-Aime: They have not, but a number have reached or are about to reach the half million mark. Ubisoft has two titles that are awfully close. EA has done very well with Madden and Tiger Woods. Activision has done very well.
We focus on this because there's a historical view that third-party licensees cannot make money on Nintendo platforms, and it's just false. Today, third parties are doing extremely well both on Wii and DS. That's why they're devoting more and more of their own development resources against these two platforms.
Q: Do you foresee a day when third-party publishers beat out Nintendo for the first-place position for Wii game sales?
Reggie Fils-Aime: I think it's certainly doable. I think some of the content here is quite provocative. Boogie from EA is quite provocative. I love the support we're getting from 2K games and their sports franchise. Activision with Guitar Hero -- when that comes out on Wii I think that has the potential to become the top-selling game across the industry.
Q: When do you think that crossover point might be -- this year? [ With regards to catching the Xbox 360 ]
Reggie Fils-Aime: On a U.S. basis, we have sold through roughly 2.5 million Wiis... On a pace of 2-to-1 [compared with Xbox 360 sales], that inflection point certainly happens this year, if not next.
Q: Sony has said that the PS3 is a technology that's future-proof because of its powerful microprocessor and high-definition disc format. In a couple years, is there a possibility the Wii will start looking a little creaky in comparison to the PS3, and Nintendo will be left in the dust?
Reggie Fils-Aime: I guess when you're not doing well you have to grasp at something. From our perspective, this industry is about entertainment and it's about driving a consumer interface and engagement with content. That's why people want to play games. From that standpoint, our strategy is certainly working and we believe it's going to work into the future. What that future is going to look like and what's the content - stay tuned.

There's only one reason for a gamer to care about sales figures or the console war in general: more sales means the third parties will jump ship to your platform (especially important if you've only got one console). That means more games to choose from.

Exactly as I expect from you GR. You claim that you are not biased, yet your actions and behaviour say otherwise. This is exactly the act of futility I speak of.
Well, given past history with the members commented on, it seemed like a flame to me- would have been hypocritical not to include it in the warning. I fail to see how telling members on both sides of the argument to stop insulting eachother is "biased". Surely its, if anything, completely moderate, rather than partisan?
edit: Though lets not take this off topic if its going to continue- PM?

GR781 said:As for sales figures- I dont see why anyone but the companies whos sales figures they are should really care about them that much. As long as companies are successful enough to not go bust, and thus continue producing the games I want, I dont care how many consoles they sell. Anyone who likes nintendo should know that- theyve historically sold less than their competitors, but theyve often made more money and have stuck around for a damn long time. Even if you are going to take the economic performance of companies that seriously, sales is still fairly irrelevant, what matters is their revenue and their costs- i.e. how much profit they are making.
Broadly speaking, GR, you are absolutely correct. I never found owning a Cube the least bit disappointing.
What is bothersome is the hypocritical nature of fanboys. Even though the Cube sold almost as many consoles as the Xbox, fanboys still see the Cube as a failure. The fact that the Xbox lost so much money and Cube made money - then any intelligent analysis would say that the Cube was a success and the xbox a failure.
The other point, is that the fanboys carped on about sales, all the time in the last generation. It was so important to them. This time around, with the horror of losing (Sony fanboys in particular and xbox fans when it is overtaken), the fanboys say it isn't about sales, its about power. They shift to cover their ineptitude.
Fanboys are also spending an inordinate amount of time, degrading the Wii, to claim that it is not really a competitior to the PS3 and 360. They do this to cover their losing choice. If the Wii had have been a failure, they would have considered it a competitor and yelled all over the internet. That is hypocritical and lame, that is a fanboy:cooldude:

I know you weren't a member here when the gamecube/xbox/ps2 gen was in full swing, but we did have quite a few discussions on the relative importance of sales- ultimately, I think a lot of people agreed that as long as it doesn't affect them on any practical level, theres no real point in getting emotionally attached to sales figures of a console- so people aren't really switching stances by saying that sales don't matter.

Oldschool, I don't actually think it's a fanboy thing in particular (in the classic company drone sense of the term). Instead I think it's a hardcore gamer thing. Hardcore gamers want what the 360 provides: shooters, graphics, AI, online, faux-mature content, rankings, a console dedicated to them where they are the most important. They're so myopic in their view that they can't see that other people want other things.
So the Wii, despite its success, is denegrated because they can't see that there are a large number of people for whom the graphics of the PS2 are fine and those of the Wii are fantastic, for whom the idea of simple games, non-games and party games is appealling. Because they know and care about 1080p, they think everyone else does.
As I said before, the Wii drought is only a drought for the hardcore minority, who are only ever partially catered for on Nintendo consoles anyway (even the 'gamers' games on Nintendo platforms are resolutely mass market friendly).
Really it's just the case of angry young gamers being upset that the world doesn't revolve around them.

I concede that the membership here may have been more mature than elsewhere at that time. I also concede that the British majority would help that maturity. However, elswhere, especially on American dominated site (Gamespot in particular), the fanboys were amazing, in a pathetic kind of way.

Is that the best you can do? Is that the best you can come up with in a 24 hour thinking time? I would sack your writers if I were you. They really let you down this time. When are you going to focus on the topic?

Yes in 24 hours I could only think that up because of course, as you can see I post so much on Cubed3. Just an observation. Anyways, guess this should get back on topic...

I don't think that's a fair generalization - most, if not all, of the 360-obsessed Wii haters on this site are British.

Nah, it's just that in Britain 14 year-olds are too busy drinking bright blue fortified wine and hanging round city centres to post on websites. It's left to us older, more mature Brits to do that.

Oldschool, the Lynxy was technologically inferior to the GameBoy, as was Sega's handheld. Different markets require different technological focus, for the handheld market technological advancements are in size, portability and charge time and the Lynx failed to surpass the GameBoy in any of those fields.

To be a tiny bit more of a cunt, I would like to point out, at this juncture, that the DS CPU is actually only a 32bit RISC processor, and is not 64-bit technology. The PSPs CPU on the other hand, is based very closely on the PS2s, and is indeed 128bit.Whats the matter with you? WHY DO YOU NOT KNOW THESE SIMPLE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS? It is because you own Wii. It has robbed your mind of its technical specifications, and data.
