Nintendo News | Microphone on Wii Controller?

By Adam Riley 02.06.2007 24

Quick News - Over on CNN there is a closer look at the make-up of the Wii controller, and surprisingly there is focus on an 'audio translator', which apparently converts analogue data such as human speech and is currently unused. Could this really be a microphone function? Check out the diagram below:

Interesting...if it is a built in mic maybe we could be seeing another addition to the rock band concept. Sorta like a singstar style addition.

I don't see why CNN would lie or be mistaken about this kind of thing... so assuming it's true hopefully we'll see some more interesting stuff in the future.

Or, maybe like human ears, it could be used to detect the way it moves around? Enhancing it's motion sensing abilities? Just a thought.

This is the $2 thing, isn't it?

Yeah, interestingly enough, it's pretty much on the back of the audio amplifier too. Is that very relevant?

From what I gather, its not the microphone itself, but the processor for one- I envision a mic-style attachment- maybe a big fuzzy dome head to clip on to the wiimote, to turn it into a big microphone for a singstar kind of game?

Well, that isn't at all unlikely I think, I mean, with the Wiimote there are an infinate number of possibilities for attatchments. It's only really the begginning!

Yeah i think GR has a point actually, he might be right!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Interesting... Hopefully it'll actually be put to good use

I was thinking exactly what GR said, it don't think it is an actual mic but as suggested it can probably translate the audio into digital so that it can be used. It will be used in conjuction with some attachment if thats what the chips purpose is.

Another thought that if there was a Mic already on the Wii, it would probably have been exploited already if not in a game then at least through some form of marketing and most definately have been labelled or have an area of the Wiimote with small holes indicating its presence.

    Just a thought.

Here come all the Nintendo spying theories, and the real reason for WiiConnect24 is so that they can hear what we're saying all day.

    Pre-order cancelled.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I assume it will be absolutely required when Nintendogs Wii is released. How cute will it be when your dog comes to the front of your 108cm Plasma televisionSmilie

    Temporarily banned until further notice.

    Online multiplayer :3

Any speaker can be a mic, incidently.
(plug your speaker into your mic port and shout into it if you dont belief me :p)

So, in theory, the mic on the wiimote might be dual purpose.
Dunno how good it will be though.

Probly will be used for online voice chat, Nintendo really have to start making online games with more options.

Well hopefully the socket on the bottom has mic pinouts that go straight to that thing.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Hmm if it is attached to the bottem it would have to have a pass through socket for the nun chuck aswell.
Could end up being a wiry mess though Smilie.

I think it could be wirless. Reciever in bottom of Wii Remote, then the rest speaks for itself.

Could require charging or batteries though... Can things be charged wirelessly? e.g., weren't there rumours of Wireless Nunchucks? If so, how would they do it? Would the Nunchuck have to be charged or refilled with batteries?

I said, the speaker on the wiimote
    is a microphone as well.
    ALL speakers are microphones :p

Walkie-talkie style comms is already possible, in terms of hardware anyway.

    That's shite though.

i thought it was to work when online, instead of typing what u said you'd say it, and it would detect the speech of ur voice the decebels and if you was shouting really angry because id just kicked ur arse online, it would come up REALLY BIG BECAUSE UR ANGRY I WHUPPED YOU. i seem to remember hearing something like that about an application on the wii. i'm probably full of shit

First of all, it was a patent that does exist, but will probably never be used.

Speaking of lots of attachments and all, did anyone ever find out what the two slots on the classic controller were for?

For makeshift remote attachments, I think. should be a link to one somewhere.
