Nintendo Reviews | Famitsu Rates Zelda DS 39/40!

By Adam Riley 20.06.2007 22

The latest batch of review scores are out now from the new issue of Japanese publication Famitsu and it seems the magazine loves the new Nintendo DS version of Zelda, scoring it almost as high as Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time (both of which hit top honours with 40/40)!

Check out the results below:

  • Zelda no Densetsu: Mugen no Sunadokei (NDS, Nintendo): 10 / 10 / 9 / 10 - (39/40)
  • Kawa no Nushi Tsuri: Komorebi no Tani, Seseragi no Uta (NDS, Marvelous): 7 / 6 / 6 / 6 - (25/40)
  • KuriKuri DS: Otasuke Island (NDS, From Software): 4 / 7 / 6 / 6 - (23/40)
  • Simple DS Series Vol. 16: The Sagasou: Fushigi na Konchuu no Mori (NDS, D3): 6 / 6 / 5 / 6 - (23/40)
  • Simple DS Series Vol. 17: The Nezumi no Action Game: Mouse-Town Roddy to Rita no Daibouken (NDS, D3): 5 / 6 / 5 / 5 - (21/40)
In addition to this resounding victory for Zelda, which hits Japan this Saturday alongside the launch of two new DS Lite colours, three new DS titles were given rough time spans for release:

  • Famista Baseball DS (Bandai Namco) - 27th September, 2007
  • Hamekomi - Autumn, 2007
  • Ryuusei no Rockman 2 [ Mega-Man Star Force 2 ] (NDS, Capcom) - Winter 2007

Wind Waker didn't really deserve that rating, & "gaming bible Famitsu" isn't as trustworthy as people make out... but it's definitely a good sign, & I can't wait for the game. I wonder when the EU/US release will be?

Wind Waker was awesome, as no doubt this game will be. I am not saying this because Famitsu said so, they are heavily biased towards anime-like games.

Hell yeah, cannot wait, great score and you just know this game is great. This game will give the series a welcome lift with all it's differences to previous games, while retaining the magic formula. The game seems like a wonderful merge of the best. [LS]

You my friend are scum and a WORM!! Wind Waker was fucking awsome, deffinetly on of the best Zelda game.. probably top 5!

Anyway that score is awsome, and PH is going to be awsome, cant wait for it to come out!!!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I rate WW higher than OoT and TP

As many do, WW was indeed a great game if not fully well realised as it could have been. It needed more levels and imagination towards the end of that adventure imo. When you went to the bottom of the sea, you the player expected a whole different world below and you never really got that, which was a shame. I want a WW on the Wii next, not another TP styled game. [LS]

Wind Waker certainly didnt deserve that rateing.

Great Style.
No Substance.

Its funny how people can be blinded by a different rendering techique. I swear if WindWaker was rendered normaly, people would see it as the worst 3D Zelda by quite a margin.
Give it a lick of cool styleing and people forget its sins.

If Ocarina is 40, then Wind Waker should be 37ish. It certainly does not deserve to be in the same league as such a revolution game as Ocarina.

Beyond Good and Evil was a many times more enjoyable game then TWW.
It wasnt artifialy stretched to make it seem longer, and was much more replayable.
Same goes for Twlight Princes, incidently. Id much rather play over those 60 hours again then spend another 20 sailing around collection half a dozen different things over an ocean.
[/grumble grumble]

Still, TWW was still *good*.
Just not 40/40 good.

Ocarina, TP, Majoras Mask are all better *games*
Even if they are a worse *style*

Wonderful score, hopefully the game itself holds up. I soo can't wait for the Holidays!

Yeah I don't think windwaker deserved it either, it felt rushed in parts. Still possibly a good sighn but i'll wait for some more review sources.

I truly loved WW and can't really understand the criticisms of it. The dungeons, the story, the sidequests, the sailing and even the triforce quest were really enjoyable to me. TP just felt like a dungeon crawl. The dungeons in OoT just weren't as good as WW. MM was close, but suffers from some problems in its execution, I think.

As for Beyond Good and Evil. It's a great game, but it felt horribly curtailed. Just as I was really getting into it it was almost over. Also, the bosses were rotten.

Perhaps it's one of those "which did you play first" things.

PH looks great. I love this change to a single major dungeon which you have to tackle in a piecemeal fashion. I'd love to see that idea used in future Zelda games too.

"This man has advanced communist views ... He dresses in a bohemian fashion both at his office and in his leisure hours."

The dungens were good in windwaker it was just a chore to get to them and the triforce hunt was a huge glaring flaw, so many people just stopped playing at that point.
The story was a bit meh aswell, it ranks just above zelda II for me.

But wind waker was both geared more towords a japanese market...i hate the girl who always only gives zelda 9...(she did so with twilight princess as well...which got 39) :X

I'd lick you but... It'd probably freak you out...

Either way Phantom Hourglass looks awesome, and I've always found the 2D Zeldas more fun than the 3D ones.

Nice score, hopefully a sign of good things to come from the first Legend of Zelda on the DS. I am still concerned about the touch screen-only control scheme, I didn't like using it to run in Super Mario DS or in Animal Crossing. But I wont' say anything 'till I've played it.

famitsu has 4 reviewers, each giving a game a score out of 10.

The sea sections in Wind Waker were sometimes tedious, though it's also one of the things I lvoed about the game, it was different.

Still, it didn't deserve a perfect rating, it's my least favourite 3D Zelda.

Though all of them are still excellent games.
