Nintendo News | Developer: We Will Only Make Mediocre Wii Games

By Adam Riley 20.06.2007 34

In a surprising report, an unnamed developer, reportedly one of the largest in the Industry, has stated that it will only bring middling efforts to Wii, simply leaving Nintendo to deliver the 'big' content. Whilst the likes of Sega, EA and Square Enix are busy putting their efforts into creating strong software for Nintendo's extremely popular Wii console, a new report is suggesting there is at least one large Third Party out there that simply wants to cash-in on the system without putting any real major investment into creating Triple-A quality games.

Sadly, Screen Digest states the following:

"Publishers in the past have been loath to invest in Nintendo consoles to the same degree as Nintendo 1st party, so 3rd party titles have often not been as competitive. This time round, on one hand some publishers are investing much less saying they will leave the platform drivers to Nintendo and ride their coat tails by spending very little on mediocre quality titles but ones which will give some return. Ubisoft. Obviously. Is there even a question?

Actually no, maybe not. I think Ubisoft are too fucking stupid to know that their games are all shit.

Still, if it's not Ubisoft it'll be Capcom or Namco, since they bum Sony.

Nah it's not Ubisoft as they have promised to lift the quality of ther Wii titles in future. Possibly Namco IMO.

Who ever it may be, avoid their games with vigour, such developers are scum and deserve to be hit hard with bad sales. [LS]

Im guessing its Namco... since they have never made AAA games for Nintendo... Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Well Namco's Point Blank is a double AA, SoulCalibur?, they dont really have any prominant franchises apart from PacMan Championship which I doubt they will bring to Wii anyway. [LS]

Yeah i would regard Soul Calibur II as a AAA game but what i meant was they havent made an exclusive game for a Nintendo console that has been AAA... Unlike CAPCOM... they have made loads of exclusive games for Nintey consoles that have been AAA!

I'd say Namco is the developer. Capcom are currently playing wait and see. Squenix is fully on-board.

I suppose it could be Konami, if they regard Dewy and Eledees as throw-away and the news about Pro Evo is true. Don't think so though.

Anyway, this will all change if the sales gap continues to widen.

If only we could afford the general public to boycott them! The sad thing though is they are right. If you can make a crap game in a very short period of time and have it sell enough to generate a profit, why not? The people who know whats going on will not buy it, but the uneducated casual gamer, a gamer that the Wii likely has in larger supply then the 360 or PS3, will likely buy it without even knowing what he's buying.

I'm kind of just amazed though that there are development teams out there who really want to settle for mediocre. What happened to pride in your work?

They put it on a ship and lit on fire!

This is what happens when you target a console at non-discerning demographics like women and old people.Smilie

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Namco, imo. indeed they do heart Fony - see the cellius agreement - (lets see where that gets em). SoulCal Legends is a spin-off, not AAA. so yeah, that boycott sounds interesting.

It is not Ubisoft. They are not Japanese and while they have done a couple of rather lame ports of old s/w, RED STEEL and RAVING RABBITS (ok not my cup of tea, but perfect for Wii's demographic) are AAA programs. My 2 cents: I don't think UBISOFT has got all the credit it deserves brining out RED STEEL as a launch title: an excellent fps, new control systems etc ok, so the sword fighting wasn't quite what we expected, it is still fun (and exhausting!). I think Ubisoft's other efforts haven't been perfect but they do acknowledge that, so hey. Surely there must be dozens of smaller development houses besides the big names that could have made in-it-for-the-business comment...

Perhaps Ubisfot have moved office, right next to Nintendo, just to prove how little effort they want to make.

Just in a dangerous thinking-outside-the-box sort of thing here, what about SNK Playmore? They seem apathetic.

What happened to pride in your work?

It hit an iceberg.

And looking at the current Wii line-up I'd be tempted to say Nintendo.

Well you wouldn't expect much from them anyway. They're not very big, and very hardcore.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

That's just the problem I have with developers nowadays. They're so stuck on the perception that Wii is only a system for nine year old boys, their soccer moms, and their sister, and that true gamers will only play on PS3 or Xbox 360. Wake up, and now, developers. The time when Sony dominated all might not stay forever, and the way it looks now, change is about to happen. Start respecting the people who buy your games, regardless of the system they play them on.

Getting back to naming developers, I'm surprised nobody has suspected Sega of saying this. Seriously, after their recent comments, think about it.

I still don't get why you keep saying this... In CAPCOM's case... Err... Resident Evil 4? Viewtiful Joe, P.N.03, Killer 7 etc... After Ubisoft they were probably the developer who gave the Gamecube the most support. As for NAMCO they gave the GC Soul Calibur 2 and worked WITH Nintendo on Starfox Assault (Which I still thing was great). They seemed hella close with Nintendo as of late so I really don't get where you get this idea from...

That said if I had to go with any of the Japanese devs working on the Wii at the moment I'd have to say CAPCOM. The Wii gets RE4 (again...) and a shit looking RE spin-off which will probably take about an hour to complete at most... Clover are now dead and Devil May Cry 4 has as much chance of getting to the Wii as Gears of War so... Yeah... CAPCOM...

As far as I know Namco only have 1 Wii game going so far and I don't think it looks mediocre at all. If anything it looks far better than the proper SC games which you realise are terrible after you play them for a few days...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

It's a catch 22 in a way and it happened heavily during GameCube's lifespan. They'd bring over cheap, half-assed ports of AAA games, complain that no one was buying them on GC and then cancel support for it altogether. A means to an end. Really chicken sh*t.

3rd parties are starting to do it again, except it's now "last-gen" ports. They need to stop stop shoveling Wii with half-assed, last-gen ports and low budget spin-offs and take advantage of the enormous potential Wii offers.

Of course, then you had a few companies like Capcom that created a few freak'n awesome AAA titles exclusively for GameCube. And then ported them over to PS2 & Xbox with additional content. More chicken sh*t.

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Capcom have released a ton of games for PS2 that it wouldn't release on GBA or GC or Wii, loads of Megaman games & fighting games etc. What was on GBA? Megaman Battle Network, & PSP got a remake of the first megaman...

I don't know Capcom that much, but they defo bum Sony.

& if it's defo a Japanese developer, then they probably mean it's bad for THEIR standards. If their standards are high, the games are probably pretty good. Ubisofts' standards are low... so for Wii they brake new records for bad quality! Smilie

So, it's not Ubisoft. D:

Prolly Capcom or Namco then, I mean, what titles have Capcom announced for Wii? Uhm... RE4 port... a funny looking RE game in arcade on rails style gameplay... & a Wind Waker rip off O_O

Namco on the other hand; Sony pays them much money to keep all the games, Soul Calibur III was proof.

As for Konami, no, I don't think it's them, their support for Wii is already 1,000,000 times better than Konami's GC support... did Konami even support GC at all? It probably did, but nothing that stands out. Dewy's Adventure & Eledees in the launch year however, do stand out, quite a bit.

But megaman is mario's hoe.
(about 20 for GBA...already about 5 for ds)

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

No offense, but this is one developer, people. ONE. I doubt it's Capcom, I doubt it's Square, I doubt it's Konami or even Namco. Actually, Namco has quite a few exclusive games coming out on Wii. I think it's someone else.

It's definitely no Ubisoft, either.

But regardless, the only group they're hurting by only giving out mediocre stuff is themselves. Especially when some big names are putting all their effort into Wii. Seriously, it's hardly worth being worried about. The Wii is going to be fine if one developer doesn't jump on board. It's not gonna change the fact that the Wii is a hit.

Look there is no way that it is Capcom, no way at all. Nintendo held a press launch event in Tokyo you may remember last year, and among all the big japanese developers that were piling on praise Capcom was one of them pledging full support. The fact they have brought a great game to Wii is also proof in effect that it is not them, Zack and Wiki is said to be one of the best Wii games so far, and will remain in the top five Wii games by the end of the year.

Bandai Namco on the other hand may well be under the thumb of Bandai now, and in turn are now geared to making profit rather than quality.

[Bandai used to distribute the NES back in the day after Mattel pulled out in it's latter life.]

Perhaps this union of theirs is geared so that Namco can produce the games while Bandai put use their expertise in distribution. It's sounds to me that this NEW company Namco Bandai are geared perfectly to make money. [LS]

"But megaman is mario's hoe.

And all of them are fucking crap if you are a REAL Megaman fan.

Hmm .. It's not Capcom, Namco, Square or Konami as all have pledged support as others here have said. Koei wouldn't be described as major I guess, Banpresto (owned by Namco Bandai I think) and Taito are small(ish) ..

More likely candidates IMO, are Hudson - just a few puzzle games so far .. Smilie
