Industry News | Manhunt 2 Wii Also Banned by Nintendo (US)

By Adam Riley 21.06.2007 29

Following yesterday's update on how Rockstar/Take-Two's Manhunt 2 would be rated 'Adults Only' by the ESRB in America, both Nintendo and Sony have refused to allow the game to appear on their systems due to corporate policies that prevent AO-rated games being released on their platforms in an attempt to protect their consumers. This means that as it stands, Manhunt 2 will not appear on the PSP, PS2 or Wii in either the US, Ireland or the UK. No doubt other countries will soon jump on the bandwagon, leaving Rockstar with no choice but to re-work the game that was originally set to hit Europe on 10th July.

Expect further updates soon...

So basically, does the game even exist? Smilie

I was all for Manhunt 2 but after seeing this, you can't help but think of the phrase "Rockstar just got owned".

It makes me wonder where the game will actually be sold.

PSN: shiptoncraig
Steam: Guess what?

I hope it does not happen on the continent where I hope to bag a copy soon enough. [LS]

Well, we'll see what happens to the Europe/Australia/Japanese releases... The Japanese one prolly wouldn't be for ages anyway... if at all.

I'm actually hoping it'll get banned on all platforms everywhere Smilie would be hilarious! Smilie

Lol, sounded demented, so this isn't surprising. Now people can moan about both Nintendo AND Sony for being 'kiddy'.

Well, I guess it's to avoid the bad publicity. It's a good business move, as they'll have people at their doorstep with eggs at hand.

Basically, it'll stop the parents from being sad.

<_< sooo let me get this right a game that is Adults Only that only Adults can buy cant be play by Adults for it being a Adults Only wtf why have the rateing if no one will sell it

Probably because Nintendo & Sony don't want that rating on their home consoles. It's the kind of rating you find on dodgey PC games.

Smilie i feel sorry for the ppl that work on the game lol do they get pay now?

.........all that work? For nothing?

Smilie Well this sucks donkey balls! Its pathetic really... what a bunch of drama queens!

YOu know what would be funny if Rockstar done a GTASmilieA... Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

You'd think they'd have checked with Sony/Nintendo before making it how they did to see if it'd actually be acceptable, really. Disappointing. Unless it gets banned elsewhere, Amazon is going to get a lot of imports from the continent...

I'm very disappointed to hear this news. I was looking forward to Nintendo finally leading toward more mature games and bringing some variety to the Wii. Now what's gonna happen to No More Heroes? They said that's gonna be really violent too. Are we gonna be left with just kiddie games for the Wii? I don't know about you, but I didn't buy a Wii so I can play Pokemon.

Killing people sure is mature alright. Smilie

Sorry, I just squirm when anyone uses the word mature for this kind of game. Not right IMO. Smilie

Anyway, IMO this is hilarious. Never liked Rockstar, they got POWNED. Smilie

Couldn't they have declined the game on their platform before completing it?

Suda 51 did say they wanted it to be more violent then Manhunt 2.
Although I expect that No More Heros will not have any problem getting a rating.

I actually was looking forward to this game, I am curious as to what exactly is in the game, the 1st Manhunt was pretty gruesome to start with, what does some guy get his face ripped off or something, somehow I doubt it's nothing we haven't seen in movies like Hostel or Saw.

Personally I think this is a massive fuck-off mistake for Nintendo. Take Two get in talks with them about finally bringing some shit to their systems, they get a game, and they refuse to allow it on the console? Silly... I mean there'd be controversy about it, but at the very least it'd mean you could only get it on the Wii, with Sony refusing to allow it on the PS2, which would be a big talking point and probably mean more sales...

As it is people WILL find a way to play it anyway, so I don't see the point...

Also, the 'corporate policies that prevent AO-rated games being released on their platforms' must be bullshit. I'm sure there are a bunch of games that were rated AO before that were banned from the console. San Andreas certainly wasn't, it's just that certain shops refused to sell it...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

The game hasnt even been released yet... and everybody is talking about it... Smilie Rockstar must be loving this!!

This isn't the end of it yet. Rockstar can still re-submit the game for a different rating. Since the ESRB chooses a different group of random people each and every time, chances are that a new group watching the same video will rate it M. Well, this goes for the US version, at least.

If that doesn't work, Rockstar can still tone down some of the more "disturbing" images.

I don't post much, but I will appreciate any feedback on the posts I do make. Feel free to PM

R* would have know both Sony and Nintendo policy way before they release any game on their platforms - so I blame R* for this. They are trying to push back boundaries, court controversy in the media etc to boost the "coolness" of their games to their target audience. Banning, threatening to ban or the hysteria of the media around their games is how to boost sales.

Unfortunately, they have pushed a bit too far and it has backfired on them - tough shit IMO. Like it or not, there is always a "line" and they just crossed it.

I feel sorry for the people who obviously spent a lot of time developing the game - wasted effort now eh?

Hopefully, they will tone down whatever the offensive scenes were or to include a "rescue some dopey bird in distress" goal and I;m sure the various ratings board will reconsider ..

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those that understand binary and those that don't ..

Meh, someone will leak the game in it's current un-censored form, and those of us with modded PS2s will be able to download it and play it in it's full glory Smilie

Stupid move by Nintendo. Very stupid indeed. Maybe they could beef up the graphics then perhaps Bill will let them put it on the 360 Smilie.

No Longer Temporarily Banned.

What a load of bull... Can't have Manhunt 2 but sure we will take Saw 1, 2, 3. They are not just as equally graphic... Dumb move US... And i was looking forward to it.
