News has just this minute hit about a brand new joint-venture between popular Western developer Bioware and Japanese company Sega, with the two working on a Sonic RPG for DS! Below is the full Press Release:

SEGA Europe, Ltd., SEGA of America, Inc. and Canada-based developer studio BioWare Corp. today announced a partnership to create a new video game based on the classic SEGA flagship icon, Sonic The Hedgehog. The exact name of the game is undetermined, but this new title developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS will ship in 2008.

"BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world. Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages."
    - Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc.

BioWare is the award-winning independent developer that has created some of the world's best-selling titles including the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights series, the 2003 Game of the Year, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the 2005 RPG of the Year, Jade Empire. BioWare is currently developing one of the most anticipated next-generation titles of 2007, Mass Effect.

"We're thrilled to be working with SEGA on Sonic, one of the industry's most enduring and compelling icons."
    - Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare.

"As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we're committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character's broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure."
    - Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer of BioWare.

The relationship with BioWare reinforces SEGA's increased emphasis on Western content development for Western audiences. In the past few years SEGA has announced partnerships with developers Bizarre Creations, Gas Powered Games, Monolith Productions, Obsidian Entertainment, Planet Moon Studios, Pseudo Interactive and Silicon Knights. SEGA has also acquired development studios The Creative Assembly, Secret Level and Sports Interactive.

The thing is... I've played some of their games. KOTOR is incredibly slow paced, I thought it was pretty overrated. I just don't like the style of them, they always seem like they have to be mature, & their stories aren't as crazy, magical or in depth as JRPGs.

JRPGs are great for fantasy, I think Sonic would suit that more than big bulky humans wearing masks & walking really slowly around a stupidly huge world... (WRPG)

Damn, I just did a little research on Bioware... I didnt know much about them, but it seems that all they make are WRPGs.LAME. This wont suit Sonic D:
Neither would any kind of RPG... That's kinda the whole point...

But the chances are, theyll create a brand new character called... Haze and base it around him and his special power. Smilie
Don't be silly, he/she'll be called Purple, Orange, Cyan, Gold, Magenta or maybe Furry

Also, I doubt it'll be anything like the comics... The Archie one is better known (At least in America, which is where this is being made) so if anything it'll be more like that than the good old Sonic The Comic... Which died YEARS ago if I remember corrently... Unless the shops round here just stopped selling it. I do remember it going into a downward spiral though. First they had one old comic each issue, then it was about half and half, then there was only one NEW comic each issue, then even THAT disappeared...

    I think the Archie Sonic Universe would probably be better for an RPG actually since it actually has a bit of proper story to it, even though I despise it... I mean... It's American... >_> The cartoon was pretty good though... ^^;

Wow, suprising stuff. With Bioware making this, this shall be great. Even though I could never picture a WRPG developer making a Sonic RPG, I know they will somehow pull it off.

Oh please don't tell me JRPG are better.... they are all about the same. Just you wait when Mass Effect and Dragon Age come out... just you wait. The only thing that Bioware really lack in their games is polish, which they seem to be fixing with Mass Effect.
By the way Bioware fans, I am playing Jade Empire right now. Its pretty enjoyable!

Actually, with Bioware making this, the only chance it has of being a bad game really is the characters & story... if the theme of the game is what gets the review scores down I'll be so pissed off. I mean it's Bioware, they have a good reputation & tend to make good games... & the Sonic world is pretty anime styled anyway, & it's a Sonic game, I can't see it being slow paced.

I'm sure BioWare will know what to do with this, it could be the strangest Sonic game ever... but it could also be the greatest. Let's face it, RPGs, especially ones from big names like Bioware, have such potential to be great, but a Sonic game with an average score of over 90% is a rare occurance indeed. Who could imagine that a spin off Sonic game could end up being the best in the series? Quite a weird though. Although it goes without saying that many people don't get on with RPGs.

Also, on a fairly relevant tangent, I had a look at FFXII just yesterday. It looks so WRPG-ey at times.

So Superlink you've never played Jade Empire? While its not fast paced it is an action/RPG so it considerably quicker than standard W/JRPGs.

No, to be honest I havn't played many WRPGs, it's the style I don't like more than anything. I've only played KOTOR which was very slow paced in my opinion, & though the landscapes looked big, they felt pretty limited... It was something about it. Apart from that I've played WMMORPGS. I don't like them at all. The thing that ruins WRPGs for me as I said, is the big bulky characters, all the men always have to seem big boned & have manly beards... They're pretty generic. Also the look of the games seem slow paced too... It's the realistic thing WRPGs have over JRPGs that I don't like about them. WRPGs always look big & realistic to a point of looking dull.

Though I'm going on looks here, seeing as I havn't played many WRPGs... though it IS these looks that have put me off playing them in the first place... But I don't think these things can be possible for a Sonic game, as I said before, Sonic is supposed to be fast paced & it has an anime style. Bioware can't change it too much I guess Smilie

You HAVE to play Jade Empire just to understand how unfounded those WRPG assumptions are. Stylistically it was one of the most gorgeous games to come out on the Xbox.

Just watched some videos of Jade Empire, doesn't seem too bad. If it's like that, Fable or Dark Alliance or something it could be pretty good. I just hope it won't be like Baldur's Gate... But then looking at the platform it's on it probably will be >_>

Jade Empire plays similar to Fable.

Not really... Everything looks all Oriental in Jade Empire. As far as I can see anyway...

And you say it like the characters in Guild Wars look any worse than the identical characters in any boring, generic JRPG...

Guild Wars factions is all oriental... the style looks too similar to me... more realistic = boring...

Also, JRPGs are interesting because they're so unrealistic, the characters are really strange & so are the locations... Even though the stories may be really similar lots of the time, at least it's not a boring story if it happens to be original...

That made no sense at all... If the stories are the same all the time (Which they are) then one thing which they aren't is original... To be honest I couldn't really care less about the story when the characters and gameplay are as dull as they are in most RPGs... Mainly the gameplay though

JRPGs aren't always unoriginal. They're only unoriginal because there are so many of them, & Crystals tend to be quite popular. Still, when it is original it's really interesting.

IMO ultra realistic bulky men are very annoying... the voice acting in WRPGs is so annoying, they're so incredibly american, & if they're not then they're really bad accents of whatever their accent is.

What the fuck Superlink. The characters in JRPG's are fucking generic. And they're also slow paced. They're basically all turn based with a shitty selection of moves, no strategy. Go read a convoluted book, no different to any final fantasy.

I know you only play them for the pr0n.

edit: And wtf WRPG's have you seen with big bulky men and american voices?

JRPG has got to be the most overrated genre. What a bold statement... but its so true. Most of them don't have good stories like people say they do... they just have big stories. And all of them revolve around a magic item and a reluctant spikey haired hero. Plus the gameplay formula is cheap, only good thing is the visuals usually.
