Nintendo News | Majesco Brings Side-Scrolling Shooter to Wii

An interesting project in the works from Majesco/Budcat Creations brings a top side-scrolling "frenetic geometric battle" game to the Wii, Blast Works: Build, Fuse & Destroy.

Due for release in Q1 2008, Blast Works lets plays craft the game by building levels, ships and enemy crafts. In addition, players can absorb the pieces and weapons of destroyed ships to bolster their own defenses during battle spanning over 15 different air, land and sea missions - the bigger your ship, the harder it is for enemies to penetrate. Players can also upgrade their ship in the Hangar by customising weapons, propulsion systems and armour.

Creative types will further enjoy building a ship from scratch with the Ship Editor and then testing it out in combat on a custom level they've built with the Level Editor. To defend the Hangar, players must use the Wii Remote like an anti-aircraft turret to shoot down enemies attacking from all angles.

The game also features a nifty 2-player mode for multiplayer antics.

"Gamers can literally build their own shooter experience via Blast Works' easy-to-use, multiple in-game editors. This exceptional customisation combined with the unique "stickiness" of enemy debris and bright geometric graphics delivers a standout game that never plays the same way twice."
John Merchant, Marketing Manager, Majesco Europe

The idea is great, but it looks messy. It's difficult to see enemies quickly, and in this type of game you usually need to see where the bad guy is pretty guickly.

It just looks real messy to me...might be good though.
Maybe if they made the colors stand out more?

I don't really like the graphics. They're completely sterile.

Most likely a version of Nanostray, if they put some real work in the development of it could be quite good, as with any game.

The 2D scrolling shoot em has the opportunity to evolve on Wii if developers start taking new approaches to developing such games, as shown above. I would like to see more such attempts in future. This new channel announced can possibly act as a great field experimentaion for games. The Wii really does need this new channel, not just to solely provide us with new games but to also get the melting pot mixed. [LS]

There are plenty of free shmups which look better tbh. This would look good for a free one, but not for one that costs £40. Needs moar psychedelic background effects and bullet patterns.

Not the best looking but content creation sounds excellent and is always a source of distraction, hopefully they use WiiConnect24 for sending levels.

I'm really crappy at Tumiki Fighters. I don't really like how stuff just basically gets tacked on to you either. But I do like the looks of the free game better. I don't think there was shading, so the shapes separated from one another better, in my opinion.

Shouldn't this be a Wii Ware title? I wouldn't buy a game like this for £30, or even £20. I'd consider it for about 800 Wii Points though.
