What I think is simple, while many may own the game and may be unhappy with the truth, the truth remains, Redsteel was a mockery of a game, it should have never of been released in the form that it was. Of course the game had +'s but for me they did not out weigh the negatives.
The sheer amount of bugs n glitches is comical in that game, so much so that I wonder if Ubi's Paris team were taking trips to the Morrocan district in their lunch breaks. Take a look at the WIDE range of bugs on YouTube some of which are hilarious, to see what I mean. I like the rigormortis death hand one the best, you will know which one that is if you see it .
All that aside it was a bad idea to get the french team working on this title, take no offence french people, but quite frankly you have a hard enough time understanding the english across the channel, so them attempting to understand and portray true intricate japanese Yakuza culture was always destined to be a tough task.
What Ubi should have done was to give the project to their Shanghai office who were perfectly placed, and competant to do the job well. They have created some fine games from out of that office in the past including Splinter Cell etc.
The other thing that really gets to me the most IS the arrogance, (no stereotype comment to be inserted here). -
Ubisoft was one of the first to sign up onto the Wii as we all know, That game Redsteel had ample time, more time than others had, to produce the game we had all hoped it would be. At every stage of development games journalists posed the french team with their concerns about the control scheme constantly. When they showed it on the show floors the same concerns were being levelled, many said the approach was fundamentally wrong, and that they should have gone for the imaginary small box scheme as Metroid Corruption has taken. The team remained adamant that they knew best. The result is a FPS were you can slowly take in the beautiful vista's while you turn slowly, all the while being shot at in the face!. Also there is the NPCs that look like cardboard cut outs you expect to see in the cinema reception area while you are getting your popcorn and there is also that terrible voice acting, boy is it bad, I would rather hear a Yakuza having his trigger finger chopped of then listen to that muck.
I have no hopes for Redsteel 2, but if it turns out to be a good game then great.
Before release of the first it was my my second most wanted, I will need to see evidence of the improvements in that game before I look foward to the next installment.
Check out the bugs on YouTube
I think I have seen more than 30! in this game, that is indefensible and highly shoddy from a developer such as Ubisoft, they in turn deserve all the criticism they take now, at least until they show work of true quality expected with their inflated budgets. They got into a petty war with EA and it was at the detrement of their Wii games.
[LS]- I am glad I did not buy it, even if others are glad they did
