Nintendo Wii Rumour | Red Steel 2 Announced? Maybe?

By Slydevil 28.06.2007 15

Earlier today, french site, inpactvirtuel, informed all that at the very recent IDEF expo in Cannes, Ubisoft finally spilled the beans on development of a sequel to the Wii FPS, Red Steel. However since then, Ubisoft have jumped on the defensive, and denied the alleged announcement ever occurred.

From what we can decipher (translate on babelfish) of the inpactvirtuel scribes, and if the announcement is indeed true - expect it to iron out the many defects of the first installment such as the off-colour gameplay, and to add new innovations. Including online multiplayer. With an anticipated release around this time of next year.

Keeping in mind Ubi' have since denied it, it seems hardly newsworthy now, though some outlets have mistakenly omitted the denial part. So at least you're kept up to date, right? Consider it on rumour status for now. In the meantime, why not tell us what you guys would like in a sequel?

I've never been so confused by one news story. Can French speaking people follow the link and back me up on the details? Fanks.

You are correct, according to that Red Steel has been officially announced at IDEF, at Cannes.

This information has come in straight from Cannes, where the IDEF is taking place. Ubisoft just officially announced that the development of Red Steel 2 is underway.

Far from being a surprise, since we've already talked about it here, this sequel will take the best ingredients from the first episode, add a few features and do away with the faults of its predecessor, like the hit & miss gameplay*. Red Steel 2 will release on the Wii in 2008, and the cherry on the cake; an online multiplayer mode built into this new version, which hopefully will meet the expectations of player who have already tried the first.

*it says 'approximate' gameplay, which I interpret as hit & miss, or average

Smilie OM...OM..OMFG!!!

Red Steel was my second Wii game, this is awesome! Smilie

What would I like in the "supposed" sequel? Maybe a much larger game, with more weapons. I thought the swordplay was fine, so I don't need to change those controls Smilie

What I think is simple, while many may own the game and may be unhappy with the truth, the truth remains, Redsteel was a mockery of a game, it should have never of been released in the form that it was. Of course the game had +'s but for me they did not out weigh the negatives.

The sheer amount of bugs n glitches is comical in that game, so much so that I wonder if Ubi's Paris team were taking trips to the Morrocan district in their lunch breaks. Take a look at the WIDE range of bugs on YouTube some of which are hilarious, to see what I mean. I like the rigormortis death hand one the best, you will know which one that is if you see it Smilie.

All that aside it was a bad idea to get the french team working on this title, take no offence french people, but quite frankly you have a hard enough time understanding the english across the channel, so them attempting to understand and portray true intricate japanese Yakuza culture was always destined to be a tough task.

What Ubi should have done was to give the project to their Shanghai office who were perfectly placed, and competant to do the job well. They have created some fine games from out of that office in the past including Splinter Cell etc.

The other thing that really gets to me the most IS the arrogance, (no stereotype comment to be inserted here). -

Ubisoft was one of the first to sign up onto the Wii as we all know, That game Redsteel had ample time, more time than others had, to produce the game we had all hoped it would be. At every stage of development games journalists posed the french team with their concerns about the control scheme constantly. When they showed it on the show floors the same concerns were being levelled, many said the approach was fundamentally wrong, and that they should have gone for the imaginary small box scheme as Metroid Corruption has taken. The team remained adamant that they knew best. The result is a FPS were you can slowly take in the beautiful vista's while you turn slowly, all the while being shot at in the face!. Also there is the NPCs that look like cardboard cut outs you expect to see in the cinema reception area while you are getting your popcorn and there is also that terrible voice acting, boy is it bad, I would rather hear a Yakuza having his trigger finger chopped of then listen to that muck.

I have no hopes for Redsteel 2, but if it turns out to be a good game then great.

Before release of the first it was my my second most wanted, I will need to see evidence of the improvements in that game before I look foward to the next installment.

Check out the bugs on YouTube Smilie

I think I have seen more than 30! in this game, that is indefensible and highly shoddy from a developer such as Ubisoft, they in turn deserve all the criticism they take now, at least until they show work of true quality expected with their inflated budgets. They got into a petty war with EA and it was at the detrement of their Wii games.

[LS]- I am glad I did not buy it, even if others are glad they did Smilie

Red Steel was 'bargain bin' material. So hopefully Ubisoft can pull themselves together on this version.

I actually enjoyed Red Steel. It might be limited by the amounts of bugs and etc, it was still an enjoyable game and i look forward to see what they improve in Red Steel 2.

God this has the potential to be such a killer...if Ubi does it right it could be one of the best games on the Wii.

The controls worked fine for me, and I personally didn't encounter any bad glitches.

I got almost 60% completed I think after having it for a week (rented it). I didn't play it tons, maybe an hour or two a day. I know there was at least one day I didn't play it. Nothing in the game kept me from getting farther. I don't remember the voice acting being terrible, but it might've been, I don't remember (btw, playing Xbox version of Shemue II...horrid voice acting).

The worse part was sword fighting. The controls were "swing and you might hit 'em." I remember one time I swung to the right and it said I swung left!

The game was interesting though, I particularly liked the level with the rabbits (don't want to spoil anything, if you've played it, you know).

A selection of bugs and glitches, this is only a small amount, there are far more in the game, over 30 in fact-

I bought Red Steel and was so disapointed. Everything about it feels unfinished and just plain bad. I certainly won't be buying a second iteration of it unless it's a dramatic improvement!

They now have a chance to make Red Steel far better than the original. I wanted Red Steel to be good, and I enjoyed the game the way it was despite its sheer amount of glitches. I really wanna see how they make this much, much better.
