Industry News | Zelda Named Best Game Ever by EDGE

By James Temperton 03.07.2007 39

Without further ado, here is the list:

1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
2) Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
3) Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
4) Half-Life 2 (PC)
5) Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
6) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
7) Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
8) Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
9) Tetris (Various)
10) Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)

Both the PC and the XBOX only get one entry each into the top 10 with Nintendo formats dominating. Mario alone has three titles in the top 10 with Zelda getting two.

Tony Mott, Editor-in-Chief of Edge, said:

"Ocarina of Time is nearly ten years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Videogames shows that great game design does not age. In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance."

The list was compiled thanks to a poll of EDGE readers to get an accurate account of what the gaming community feel are truly the best games to ever grace disk trays and cartridge slots.

The full rundown features in a 260-page collector's book entitled 'Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames', on sale from Tuesday 3rd July, with a cover price of

No MGS1?

Makes you wonder if OoT will ever be pushed out of the top ten doesn't it?

Edit: Final Fantasy XII? Really?

Steam: Guess what?

No MGS1? No FFVII? No Shenmue? No Shenmue II? No Sonic 2? No Grim Fandango? No Monkey Island? No Broken Sword? No Doom? No GoldenEye? I could go on. The point being; that list is a load of rubbish.

Top 100 lists by people other than me are all inherently wrong.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Final Fantasy being in any 'Top' anything list (Other than Top 10 games that make you vomit) is laughable... Also, how the hell can you have Super Mario World instead of Yoshi's Island?

I don't agree with that list.

I agree with the number one choice, but anything else is personal opinion tbh.

I disagree, FFVII IS one of the best games ever made. Play it and deny it.

I agree with the majority of the people above, this list is pure bollocks.

Ocarina of Time is probably the most revolutionary game of all time.
We wont get another "best game ever" untill how we review and rate games changes.

At the moment, its a fudge.

Do we judge a game on absolute enjoyment? Or do we judge it on how much of a step up it was on those that came before it?

eg.
Resident Evil 4 Wii scored less on IGN then RE4 Gamecube.
Despite IGN admiting the Wii was better.

This is because we rate relatively, relative to the games around it at the time.

However, we never admit this.
In top100 lists we assume its all on the same scale.
We act as if this is the "100 best to play games"....it isnt.

The standard rateing system, put simply, is flawed.

You can not have a fixed scale while at the same time compareing games to those around at a time.

". Also, how the hell can you have Super Mario World instead of Yoshis Island?"

Mario World was a more revolutionary game, thats way.

Twlight Princess is better then Ocarina in the same ways Yoshis Island is better then Mario World.

Better design, story, game mechanics and technical abilities....yet still not as "revolutionary" as the predecessor.
A game can make less impact..both personaly, and on the industary....because of what game before. Even if the game is better in an absolute sense.

It would, I guess, be interesting to get people that never have played games before to compile their own list. Unbiased by expirence, age, or fond memorys.
Youd have to give them a year or too though for the expirement to work :p

Yeah, man! They totally suck balls! Rock on, motherfudger! Smilie

I don't give a penis about lists like these, I've got my own list, and OoT isn't the best one there. It's second to RE4Smilie

How? Mario World was basically the same as the other Mario games that came before it... Yoshi's Island was completely different...

I did and do. It was by far the most boring game I've ever played...

Yeah i agree with most games on that list! But any FF game shouldnt be anywhere near the top 20.. not top 10!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

This list is shit.

I think most them games would belong in most people's personal top 30, except for FFXII.

Although Metroid Prime should of been there, it might just be my favourite title of all time. *Who am i kidding it changes every week*

Super Metroid > Metroid Prime FACT!

But that list is pretty boring, I think to get a better idea we need to see the full 100. I might have a look into buying that collector's book. I am such a sucker for lists.

I totally agree with first spot, and with the selection of some of those titles. That list a whole lot of Nintendo love. [LS]Smilie

Awesome!!!!
Mario , Tetris
You all are there!!
*cries*
Pokemon! Where are you

Oh come on Ocarina of Time isn't that great...Wind Waker is much better. C3 should have a list as well.

I hardly agree with this list. No Metal Gear? Metroid Prime? Come on! Metroid Prime is better than Super Metroid!

Does arguing about video games make you a nerd?

...

Zelda LTtP was the most boring Zelda ever.

I do agree that Golden Eye should be in there somewhere. What people don't seem to realise is that these games were amazing for their time - and that's why they are on the list.
