Nintendo DS News | Loads More Double Bloob Info

By James Temperton 10.07.2007 19

Double Bloob is the first game based on the Bloob universe. Nibris have also announced Bloobs Karts. The intuitive controls and simple to pick up gameplay make it ideal for all gamers (or so Nibris claim). You also get the chance to unlock special rewards by beating the game and you can exchange your collected Bloobs in multi-player mode. Certain Bloobs are more difficult to unlock and defeat than others and there are some very rare ones that will only appear very sporadically. Nibris also promise there will be a 'strategic' element to the game.

There are various bonuses that you can use during the game such as freeze, slowdown, boost, shield and MAXgun which replaces your standard weapon with a ruddy great big 'express rifle'. Blow is perhaps the most interesting one though. By blowing into the microphone on the DS you can move all the bloobs back to the top of the screen (but only after you have the power unlocked, obviously).

We'll have loads more info on this game and other Nibris projects for you very soon. Until then, take a look at the following brand new screen:

Why the hell is the graphical quality so brilliant, yet the interface sucks absolute balls?

In about 5 minutes this'll be on GoNintendo, and about 20 comments of "fake" with it.

forgive me for being negative, but that is surely just a photoshopped concept?? all the sprites are identical apart from being rotated slightly.

i cant see why this is exciting.

It exists and has been played by C3 staff - though we only played it in concept form. Adam did a hands-on video of it. It was quite good fun, though basic at the time, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they expand the game for the final version.

Go on C3 staff, admit it. Nibris is your own little conceptual art joke, isn't it.

Putting aside all the "is Nibris real" stuff for a bit, why do members of this site slag off simple playable games from many publishers yet happily support a Super Pang rip-off from some unproven indie developer? Surely being 'indie' can only give you so much leeway.

I swear, if Midway, THQ or some other publisher announced plans for the release of games called Double Bloob and Bloobs Kart ther would be no end to the distain they'd face on this site.

I dont like the main character sprite, not really interested in this game at all but am in their other DS game. [LS]

WEVE LOST ANOTHER, SIR. Smilie

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

1) For the most part these simpler games are some of only ones within most indie's budget and development range, along with being their very first few games. Their new and very small, give them a chance. These are the developers of the future, if we shot them all down there probably wouldn't bea lot of hope, or as much of a chance for new talent to come through.

2)It's much easier to be more sceptical of Midaway/THQ etc., cos they're usually pretty crap, yet have the budget and *should* have the talent to do something better and know better. People laying into them on message boards etc. isn't exactly going to get rid of their business, nor are they gonna care. Not to mention they can easily end up crapping the games out from ending up focusing on marketing and putting the games to "casual" gamers rather than just making the dam thing, and usually less likely to follow their own bs and concepts through.

I take your points, Modplan Man, but there are a million free flash games on the web that are a hundred times more original, interesting, innovative and compelling than this tawdry Super Pang copy appears to be.

Why should Nibris be given an easy ride when there's indie games like N and Warning Forever out there?

"This man has advanced communist views ... He dresses in a bohemian fashion both at his office and in his leisure hours."

There's nothing at all wrong with them making a very simple and i hope fun title in order to make profits for their very small company. [LS]

Consider, please:
If it is real, then
* interface always gets made (not designed!) last. Hence every Screenshot form Hellgate: London had no Interface until recently
* Graphics are subject to change and like with interfaces, textures may be included later, removing all placeholder-texturepages with individual ones. Small teams may not have the built all ressoruces quite from the start.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Both good points, and quite accurate (even with large development teams with plenty of resources).

One other thing to keep in mind is that large marketing-driven companies are much less likely to let the public see anything that isn't polished because the marketing department think it reflects badly on their company image...which it does to some extent (mainly because people have been conditioned to expect highly polished demos and teaser videos, and if they are flawed at all, they call them crap :O ).

Personally, I think putting out crappy, marketing-driven games is much more damaging to a company's reputation than letting people see an game before it's polished...but I'm a gamer (and programmer) with a severe dislike for marketing, and marketing weasels Smilie.

I don't know anything about Nibris other than what I've read on this site, but the game screen at the top of the screen looks very nice (assuming that _IS_ a real game screen and not just a mockup).

As someone that's made a living as an independent game developer in the past, I understand where these guys are at. They're sharing their stuff with Cubed3.com because they get free publicity this way, and they can also get some feedback on some of their design choices (if they want any Smilie).

Making a living as an indie game developer is hard. I'm willing to cut them a lot of slack at this point, mainly because they seem to be sincere in trying to make a good game (unlike a lot of larger publishers which are more concerned with filling dates on a calendar, regardless of the quality of the crap they have to push out the door).

Innocent until proven guilty is the stance I'm taking. I don't like the way they're spreading themselves thin already before having a game out, though.

This is not a real DS screenshot, it's either a prototype on some other system (maybe flash) or concept art. It's 333x500 pixels. An actual screenshot of both DS screens would be 256x384. Also, while I'm sure it would be possible to make a score that tiny and anti-aliased on the DS, no one has done so and I'm willing to bet Nibris won't be the first. The numbers don't even align with pixel boundaries.

I'm not saying Nibris is real or fake, just that this screenshot is. As for the casual game trashers, I'd gladly buy an updated Super Pang clone from THQ or Midway, though I'd expect them to license the original. And I've played a dozen flash Super Pang clones and none of them has matched the original's graphics or smoothness, much less what should be possible after a year of development for the DS.

Anyone who thinks flash games are a substitute for native development just because Flash can handle 2D graphics well needs to spend some time in MAME. The biggest part of effective game design up until the Playstation came out (you know, when you "2D games suck" guys were like 5) wasn't the graphics or modeling or whatever, it was the feel.

Good arcade games like Super Pang were tight and responsive. Most flash action games are thrown-together graphics with the bare minimum Actionscript to make it a game. When you find a really polished exception like Line Rider or Alien Hominid, sooner or later it comes to consoles anyway.

Edit: I resized the screenshot to 256x384 and what do you know, the score digits do line up to pixel boundaries now. So who knows, maybe this was for real.

Because this rather rubbish game seems to exist in order to pay for the interesting stuff they're doing or plan to do.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those that understand binary and those that don't ..

Yeah I've always had a bit of trouble believeing that a game could look this good on the DS, but the video of thingymajig playing it looked pretty good so... I guess they did it somehow...

The game still looks rubbish though...

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

Bloobs...= boobs?

Brilliant! Smilie
