    Nintendo @ E3: Staff Reactions
    C3 Team :: 13th July 2007

We're a bit late with this one, but you can blame us all being busy little beavers for that. We've been sitting around digesting all that E3 has to offer over the last few days and now the show is closing up and everyone is winding their way home we have a chance to reflect. Join us as we give our opinions and analysis about Nintendo's E3 2007 Conference and performance in general.

Nintendo's show was, on the whole, average. One massively major announcement and some nice juicy half-revelations to keep us wanting more. Evidently, there is a lot more to come from both the Wii and the DS, so you can't blame Nintendo for wanting to keep their cards close to their chests. We've got some great games in the pipeline (and they're closer on said pipeline if you happen to hail from America) and we've also got some more online stuff to look forward to it would seem. 32 player Medal of Honor on Wii sounds lovely. The real talking point though (for me) has to be Wii Fit.

Miyamoto's demonstration of Wii Fit was the highlight of the conference. A truly innovative product that is unlike anything ever seen in the world of gaming. The bastard son of a dance mat and an exercise mat. Whilst it doesn't appeal to me massively as a way to while away the hours, the potential impact it could have on the gaming world is huge. Here is a product that not only encourages you to enjoy exercise, but it also encourages you to get fit and healthy and to do it in a social and safe environment. Kudos to Nintendo. Wii Fit is a huge leap forward from Wii Sports as it actually brings in the idea of getting healthy as an active element. Like Mr. Motivator, only less skin-tight and obnoxious. The Wii has already made gaming fun, can Wii Fit actually make it good for you? Who knows, but in the obese world of America, Nintendo has a pretty tough (fat) nut to crack.

Let's be blunt - Nintendo's E3 2007 was nowhere near as good as their E3 2006. Instead of being 'all about the games', as last year, they seemed just as happy to carp on about how their strategies are working out as they expected. This is all very nice, except for the part where we've heard it three hundred times before - the evidence speaks for itself, so we don't need it rubbing in our faces for a huge portion of every conference. Not that this is going to make any difference, they're still going to go on about it...

However, when they DID show things off, things were pretty good, for the most part. Mario Kart Wii was not nearly as impressive as I expected, though there is still time for improvement. I was also disappointed by the lack of any appearance of Disaster, Project HAMMER or the elusive and confirmed Animal Crossing Wii, but perhaps those are for the Tokyo Game Show in a few months. On the other end of the spectrum, Super Mario Galaxy somehow left me speechless - after a few trailers of it, this is certainly an achievement. The game is looking immensely better each and every time it's seen and could definitely be the game of the year. If it even comes out in Europe this year.

The Wii Zapper appears to offer a better lightgun experience than using the Wii remote alone, which makes me rather joyful, and I'd really like to see how a new Medal Of Honour has been designed with it in mind. I will join James in saying that Wii Fit was the part of the show I enjoyed the most, as, unlike many, I've been anticipating it since it was first mentioned. It didn't disappoint me either and actually seemed much more fleshed out than I had expected. Rather than being simply curious about how it works, I'm now ready to part with my cash. Shame about the rubbish title...

E3 hasn't really changed now, has it? At least not to us, the spectators. For me, Nintendo's conference was disheartening. Where did the sense of showmanship go? Exchanged for a series of powerpoint slides, with a serving of Reggie-specialised PR commentary. This is necessary to a degree, but the sheer focus on "non-gamer" content and statistics at what is a traditionally a "hardcore" gaming event is surprising. Did we just become second tier?

Where did the talk of new Nintendo franchises go? It would appear to have been shafted. Well, at least not one's that begin with Wii in their title. However, the new Wii Balance Board contraption is undeniably creative, but shallow; at least from what we've been exposed to. Even though we all secretly would be thrilled to give it a go. The newly re-designed Wii Zapper is interesting to say the least, a bit of an uggo, and sightly useless, but interesting.

However Super Mario Galaxy continues to stun, and just seems to get better at every new clip debuted. His cute bee suit gave me shivers it did. Mario Kart Wii was uninspiring. But if they can manage a well constructed online mode, plenty of worthwhile unlockables, and genuinely imaginative new tracks (all imaginative tracks need good shortcuts) and it requires significant skill. They've got a potential sale.

The Wii has a lot of impressive third party software coming up, but Nintendo failed to show off anything greatly worthwhile. Overall, it was a bit of a stinker. But surely we can't expect the lovable company to throw all their show-stoppers out at once, can we?

Not that they've shown any yet, mind...

Nintendo: A conference full of gripping new footage, momentous applause and a reason to keep watching... Perhaps last year, or the year before, but 2007 was surprisingly quiet for a company that had continually jumped from success to success in the last fourteen months. This year brought several key games, revealing them in short and slightly tacky showreels

I don't understand all the whining about Mario kart Wii guys, seriously you saw 3 screenshots and a 2sec clip.

Slydevil the Wii Zapper looked "sightly useless"..... it looked great.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the cliché. They were the statement and the definition."

Yeah I don't get it as well. Three screenshots of an early build and a quick video. That's all we have and don't get your hopes up. Only an idiot would think that Nintendo will stick to the release dates they announced. I'm still sure Brawl isn't releasing this year in America.

I'm not sure about that. I think Nintendo is serious about their big three. December 3rd seems like awhile, so I think they should be finished by then.

Hideo also said that the game is ready enoguh to release the next day.

    Online!

I think the disappointment with Mario Kart stems from the fact that there don't appear to be any major improvements from what we've seen, and Mario Kart going online isn't as big a news as it once was since the DS version has been online for ages now. It could prove itself in the coming months, it still has a while of development to go.

Well to be fair Nintendo got blasted last time when they unveiled Mario Kart DD, which happened to do something new for once. But when they showed the DS one, everyone was a lot happier.

    Online!

I think the focus shouldn't be on something like Mario Kart, but Wii Fit, the game that will sell millions more Wii consoles to the wider audience Nintendo is aiming for...It really is a master stroke!
