Sonic Team Talk Sonic Rush Adventure (Nintendo DS)
Interview by Adam Riley :: Monday July 16th 2007

When Sonic moved into the field of 3D, most people expected something of Super Mario 64 quality to be the result. Sadly this was not the case. Thankfully, though, there were three excellent 2D platform romps on GBA to satiate the public. Then along came Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS, a game hailed by many as one of the finest 2D games in the long-running series, and sales went through the roof as the game has amassed sales of over a million worldwide. A sequel was obviously an inevitability and Cubed3 caught up with Sonic Team to talk about just that, Sonic Rush Adventure.

Cubed3: First of all, could you please tell our readers how you are involved in this project and whether the size of the team is considerably bigger than for Sonic Rush?

Akinori Nishiyama: My name is Akinori Nishiyama and I am the Producer of this title. Sonic Rush Adventure is not just a sequel to the last title, but by implementing adventure features the overall scale has increased.

Sakae Osumi: My name is Sakae Osumi and I worked as the Planner and the Director of this title. The size of the team itself has not changed that much from last time, but the volume of the fun features in the game has increased.

C3: Were you surprised at just how successful Sonic Rush has been? The game certainly has shown considerable longevity in terms of sales since it launched.

AN: Producer: We are very happy that so many people purchased Sonic Rush and for supporting the longevity of the sales throughout this time. Although we had implemented a lot of different evolving elements, I am very happy that the classic 2D side scroll gameplay style was supported by so many people. I also feel that the longevity of sales proves that the quality of the game was high.

SO: I feel the sales of Sonic Rush help prove that DS is a very good hardware. I feel that Sonic Rush is especially supported by the Sonic fans and the people who started to play and enjoy Sonic from the release of the hardware.

C3: Can you elaborate slightly on what makes Sonic Rush Adventure so different to its DS predecessor?

AN: In order to keep the enjoyment of the Sonic action game, we intentionally chose not to use the stylus in the side-scroll stages. This is part of the policy we have for Sonic games, and this has not changed from Sonic Rush. In addition, we have powered-up the use of the stylus as one feature and implemented a sea navigation stage adding even more volume to the game.

SO: This title allows players to ride on vehicles you create and travel along the ocean by fighting pirates and discovering many things in different islands. It consists of 3D adventure sections where you use the stylus to control. You will also be able to challenge the enemies that await you in the islands through 2D and 3D dynamic gameplay with the full use of the dual screens.

C3: Considering the amount praise SR received, what has made you change the format this time round?

AN: Sonic Rush Adventure will not stop just as a simple action game, but we want more people to enjoy the mysteries of the ocean travel and discover new things by expanding the travelling area and experience the feel of adventure.

SO: When we started planning for the development of this sequel, I wanted to create a wider world-view and expand the enjoyment of the gameplay of the previous title even more. Since only part of the game was introduced in the press release I cannot go into details yet, but the game is set on a Southern ocean and Sonic will be challenging a more exciting adventure.

C3: Other than Sonic, which characters are set to make an appearance in SRA?

SO: Sonic's important partner Tails will of course be in this game. This time, if you collect certain items, Tails will build a vehicle for you. For the first time in the series, a pirate character Captain Whisker will appear as an enemy character. You can't miss the battle with him!

C3: How have you found development on the DS? Have there been any particular hurdles during the development process so far?

AN: By using what we learned from Sonic Rush, we feel that the development is proceeding very smoothly. We feel that the WiFi connection part is the most challenging since this is the first time for us developing on this side.

SO: The development environment for the DS is very well organised and we feel it is very good. When we first started developing for a dual screen portable hardware we had many concerns, but now it feels perfectly natural!

C3: How does the game make best use of the various DS features and will the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection be utilised?

AN: As previously said, we are going to use the WiFi connection gameplay as an additional fun feature. Also, the full use of the dual screen action play will become even more dynamic.

Good Interview. I was surprised Sonic Team could do an interview without messing it up. Only joking. But you would never have guessed they made shit games from this interview ^^;

Anyway, it's good to hear SRA will be more likely an adventure game, like the title suggests, I just hope they don't mess it up.

& I reckon Captain Whiskers is a robot. Smilie

Really? I thought the team that did Sonic Wii were the same team who did Project Rub/Feel the Magic?

Anyway, Sonic Wii is a kind of Sonic Rush wannabe anyway, with the style of music. Though believe it or not, Sonic Rush's story was more in depth than Sonic Wii's o.0;

err..sorry, I meant "I wish" :p

I liked Secret Rings, but it was nothing compared to Rush. Actualy, Rush with the RPG elements of Secret Rings would rock.

You should have asked if there would be any bottomless pits this time around. I hated how they were done in the last game.

Nice interview. I'm still wondering about that new raccoon character, though. I'm thinking that she's like a counterpart to Tails.

My name will be in the credits of your favorite video game someday! Don't forget that!

Her Japanese name is "Marin The Raccoon", I wouldn't be surprised if that was her Global name.

Since I havn't seen anything of Cream just yet, I'm thinking she'll be yet another buddy of Blaze's who helps her out on her levels.

I was hoping Tails would be playable this time around, but it might end up just Blaze & Sonic again.

Looking forward to see how they use the Wifi in this game.

WiFi may not pop up in the game after all. Apparantly they removed the WiFi info from the SEGA pages... so I can only assume that means they took it out to bring the game out sooner...

I hope a character other than Sonic and Blaze is playable. They're both too similar offering basically the same experience. I want it to be like Sonic and Knuckles where playing as Knuckles meant going along different routes only accessible to him.

Her name can't be Marin, it's not a colour or a really obvious physical feature. Are you mad?

As for the cream, Sonic'll probably be getting it all over Blaze and then Amy'll turn up all angry and try to hammer some stuff. Then it'll just turn into a big threesome...

Anyway... I'm really hoping the level design isn't as crap in this one as it was in the first... Stupid bottomless pits everywhere. As for playable characters I think it'll probably just be Blaze, Sonic and the 'Coon

Ah, Marin? That's a cute name. Smilie

And yeah, I was also thinking she was the helper of Blaze, akin to Tails and Sonic's partnership. I like her design, but I think she should've had a different fur color and different eye color because she looks a bit too much like Tails. I like Tails (he's my favorite character,) but I don't know...I just don't like the color scheme of Marin. Smilie

I think she's one of the better characters made recently, but I really want them to stop. Really. Please. Stop making new characters.

It's the rules of Sonic they have to make AT LEAST 1 new character for every game, and they usually make 2.

Amy
Tails
Knuckles
The weird... Robot Robotnik thing
I can't think of any in Sonic 3D... Smilie
Chaotix Crew
The Squirrel that was in that Arcade Sonic game
Bark and stuff from Sonic The Fighters
Big and E-102
Shadow and Rouge
E-123
Can't think of any in Sonic Advance actually Smilie
Cream
That black robot thing in Sonic Advance 3 that looks exactly like Emerl from Sonic Battle
Emerl from Sonic Battle...
Blaze and Nega-Robotnik
Aaaaaaand Marin and 'Captain Whiskers'...

Dear God, WHY!?!?! ;-;

Oh and Silver...
And all those new ones in Sonic Riders...
