Blue Byte Talks Settlers
Interview by Adam Riley :: Monday 20th August 2007

The Settlers has a very strong following in the world of home computers, but the Nintendo DS's touch-screen control mechanism has allowed for such a strategy game to be easily ported over. Now the game has just recently launched on the Nintendo DS here in the UK, Cubed3 caught up with the game's developer for a quick chat.

Cubed3: Could you please share with our readers a little about your role in this project and what you have worked on in the past?

Ralf Wirsing: Hi, I'm Ralf Wirsing, Development Director and Studio Manager of the Blue Byte team. I'm responsible for all projects at Blue Byte. As the team is very small, I'm working parallel as a producer. Currently I'm the producer of The Settlers DS project. I'm have been at Ubisoft / Blue Byte almost 10 years and worked on a lot of different titles. The last ones were The Settlers

Settlers II was always fun

I've never been able to get into The Settlers that much...This DS game's quite decent, though.

I hear it's really popular in Germany, is that right? Would be interesting to see it on Wii. And he sounds very positive about future DS games!

Yes, since there are 6 Settlers games out or in the making excluding Settlers DS. Germany just loves strategy and managing games (not any more?). I am to dumb to play either of them, I am afraid, so I do not know how good they actually are. I get either bored or confused when playing them. With Anno on DS they may have a strong competition, thou, but I wish them luck.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I don't think Anno 1701 is out in the UK yet. It got an early German release because the series is the most popular in the PC strategy genre there. So yeah, Settlers has a battle on its hands!

But, for the sake of long-term fans, I hope the Wii gets an improved version (this DS game is 'okay', but you'll see lots of middling reviews across the 'Net for it).

I've never heard of that series until now...

I could never get into it. I never figured out how to do anything! Smilie
