Nintendo News | Watching Movies on Wii - A Reality

By Adam Riley 20.08.2007 13

Despite Nintendo stating that people are not bothered about watching movies on Wii because of basically every household owning a DVD player, people still want the feature. Now it has finally arrived, kind of...

X-OOM Software has launched X-OOM Movies on Wii. Nintendo fans will now be able to play movies and TV shows on their Wii after a convertion process. X-OOM's latest software, supporting the M-PEG codec, allows for perfect quality playback. Simply run the DVD on a PC and save the file using 'Movies on Wii' to the appropriate format; once this is complete, transfer the file to the Wii using an SD memory card.

With a number of editing options including an 'Expert Mode', you can also cut and back up individual scenes and whole movies as you wish. With help from X-OOM's Fit-To-Stick technology, movies can be automatically loaded onto the memory card in a short, simple process using only the space that is available.

X-OOM Movies on Wii offers support for video formats such as DivX, XviD, MPEG2, MPEG4, WMV and more, costs just

Where is freeware when you need it?

Alternatively open a Orb account and watch all your movies and other stuff on you Wii's browser. Ive given my code to a few choice Wii Friends which means they can have access to anything I upload within seconds direct to their Wii. {LS]

Orb's nice, but Flash streams wont match the quality of what this should be able to do.
(that is, assuming this just converts to the photochannels movie format).

Incidently, if you get bored with the movie, you can always play it as a jigsaw.

I convert videos to play on my Wii, but it only seems to play short videos. Anything over about fifteen minutes just doesn't play.

Will this play a full movie?

I reckon so by the sounds of things. There is also some similar software out in the form of the Wii exploder orr something?, available on Amz also, but I reckon this one looks better and it's also the same price.{LS]

Oh god you had my hopes up. I thought it was an updated Wii or a system update...don't buy this because it'll just brick when a new update comes out.

It seems way too much of a hassle. I am not that bothered. Can you watch video clips on Wii off SDs? Like WMAs and shit?

Sounds quite pointless, and for a price like that! There are free converters out there for smaller clips; and if you have DVDs lying around surely you've got a DVD player to play them on..

Converting movies is not fun. Not that I care, but if they want people to watch films on the Wii they should hurry up and get the DVD kit out already.

Apparently, it is also reported that there has been a successful hack that actually plays real dvds on the Wii. The machine is a mod chipped machine and a cd with software on it boots up the Wii as a dvd player. It works apparently.

I couldn't care less about watching dvds on the Wii - I never did on the PS2 and Xbox, so why should I care about this function on the Wii?

Temporarily banned until further notice.

Converting is a pain in the ass, takes way too long. Though the software sounds good, supports a nice range of video files.

The only converting that I do is to bring vids off my cell phone to my wii, and thats only because wii doesn't play 3gp22 or 3gpp files.

If you own a DVD, you most likely own a DVD Player. And if your DVD can be read by your PC, you can most likely watch you DVD on your computer. Why the hell should one bother converting a DVD, JUST to play it on the Wii? >_>;

Hoopla!
