Nintendo News | Top Spin Tennis for Wii Announced

By Adam Riley 22.08.2007 5

2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, has revealed it will be releasing 'Top Spin Tennis' for Wii. As part of 2K's Top Spin franchise, 'Top Spin Tennis' features fun tennis action and the most real life tennis experience to date for the Wii (not too hard given the lack of tennis on the system!).

Developed by 2K's Paris studio PAM Development in conjunction with 2K Shanghai, Top Spin Tennis will be available exclusively on Wii in Spring 2008.

The pick-up-and-play action in Top Spin Tennis allows gamers to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers in a way that matches the movements players would make on a real court. The Nunchuk controls the player and aim, while the vibration-enabled Wii Remote hits the ball like a tennis racquet and determines the style of shot ranging from a top spin move to a slice. The Wii Remote also allows players to control the power and the quality of the shot and to serve in many different ways.

The gameplay in Top Spin Tennis will feature an array of modes including singles, doubles, mixed and non-mixed matches, exhibition, tournament and more, with four levels of difficulty and ten international venues. It will also feature more than a dozen licensed tennis stars as well as ten original characters. Up to four players can play Top Spin Tennis using as many as four sets of controllers. To add to the group fun, there are a collection of party games included.

"We are excited to bring our popular Top Spin series to the Wii. Given the Wii's unique controllers and the fun family-oriented gameplay, Top Spin Tennis effectively bridges the gap between a sports and a party game."
- Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K.

I trust these guys...but I'll wait for Virtua Tennis instead.

I trust these guys totally *stares at Bioshock's box*. It sounds great I look foward to seeing a good proper Tennis game on Wii. 2k could be very successfull with this title if they spend the time needed in development of it and not rush something out.{LS]

Preview-

Just after our demo of Top Spin 3 for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, we had a chance to talk with the developers about their plans for the Wii version. It's not being covered in the same preview because it will be a totally original creation that has little in common with the version released for Sony and Microsoft's systems.

Players who are used to Wii Tennis are going to find that there's a much greater sophistication in the interface. (Also, there are legs.) The Wii controller will really be put to great use with the nunchuck being used to move your player and determine shot placement and the Wiimote being used to control the timing, power and orientation of your swing. Swinging through different arcs will allow players the opportunity to put varying degrees of topspin or slice on the ball. It will require finesse of course but it should allow for a bit more control than will be seen in the other versions of Top Spin.

The Wii version of Top Spin will also feature entirely different standards for victory. Sure, you can still play according to the regular scoring rules, but you can also enable special victory points for a variety of special achievements. Players can earn points, for instance, for having the greatest accuracy in a game, or for having made exceptionally large gestures as they play. We're not entirely sure how that last one works, but it's sure to be the source of much hilarity.

It's far too early to speculate about Top Spin 3's other features but, given the attention to detail that's going into the overall presentation of Top Spin 3 for the 360 and PS3, this is definitely a sports game that we're going to be keeping a close eye on over the next year.

Nice one - hopefully this'll be a good stepping stone for something like Virtua Tennis and other popular sporting franchises that seem to have missed the Wii.

Top spin got very high ratings and I saw it in trailers and tests. I never was into Sports games, but Wii Tennis is absolutely awesome, especially when you hit the ball with wide movements. I am exhausted after lots of rounds, but that's how I want it.
Now with Top Spin building a big game around it, with league, Nunchuck-running and great graphics, then I am very interested to buy this.

Strange: a few months before I feared that no Software for Wii would be out and then only casual games. That's not the case. Like PS3 builts up with great titles (and I feared with this it would outcalss Nintendo again) Wii also built up with great Games, so the chances may even get ...well even.

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I love Top Spin 2 on the 360 and it's a blast in career mode too. I hope they try to get as much of the 360 version as they can into the Wii version. And online multiplayer too, please.
